PATRIOT GIRLS LIVE UP TO STATE RANKING
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, April 9th, 2004
The undefeated Pinecrest girls' soccer team took 68 minutes to find the net before pulling out a 3-1 overtime victory at Scotland County last month.
Wednesday at home, the Patriots left nothing to chance taking command early with two goals in the first seven minutes on the way to a 4-0 Mid-Southeastern Conference victory.
Patriot striker Lauren Broderick said that was the mindset of the team before the match.
"We were all kind of upset about the last game," she said of the Scot scare. "Coach Martin (Lorna) was ready for us to get out there. We all played hard right from the start."
That state's 10-ranked 4-A team, the Patriots have scored 90 goals to just four for the opposition while building a record of 8-0 in the league and 13-0 overall. The Patriot junior varsity moved to 10-0-1 with a 7-0 victory over the Scots in the preliminary game and have outscored their opponents 66-1.
Katie Fields scored in the fourth minute of the nightcap after getting behind Scot goalkeeper Jessica Smid. In the process, she injured a leg and did not return to the game. Three minutes later, Broderick received a ball at the top of the penalty circle lofted to her from the right side by Anne Brannon, and blasted it high into the net for a 2-0 lead.
The first Scot shot of the night taken by Kate Edwards from about 35 yards away in the 19th minute, was easily corralled by Patriot goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell.
Later in the half, Stephanie Carter brought back memories of a goal she made in last year's 2-0 second-round state playoff win over New Hanover when she headed a chip from Brittney Dishner into the net from about 18 yards away. Two minutes later she made it 4-0, finishing a ball crossed by Molly Lynch.
That was the end of the scoring in a match that saw the Patriots take 24 shots to eight for the Scots. Burwell and Molly Hill split the goalkeeping for the winners with each recording three saves. Smid stopped eight shots for the Scots who fell to 5-3 in the conference and 10-5 overall.
Unless the teams meet in the state playoffs, the Scots' Edwards made the last of at least 25 career appearances against the Patriots in soccer, volleyball, and basketball. She earned all-conference honors in all three sports and played in four Scot soccer wins (in 10 games) over the Patriots. She said that she is really going to miss the rivalry.
"I know a lot of the girls on the Pinecrest team and a couple of the girls played in other sports with me too," she said. "There were a lot of close games that were fun to play in. I'm definitely going to miss seeing them."
The Patriots resume play after spring break with a home match on April 19 against Richmond, the conference's second-place team.
