PATRIOTS HONOR SYSL TONIGHT
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, April 7th, 2004
It will be a Sandhills Youth Soccer League Night at Pinecrest tonight when the Patriots entertain Scotland County in 5:30 p.m. junior varsity and 7 p.m. varsity matches. All youth players wearing their SYSL team shirts will be admitted for free.
Monday at John Williams Field, the undefeated Patriots completed the first half of the Mid-Southeastern Conference schedule with a 13-0 victory over Douglas Byrd, as Katie Fields led the way with four goals. Lauren Broderick also had a big night with a hat trick and two assists and Lisa Southerland scored twice and contributed an assist.
Broderick opened the scoring, finishing a cross from the left side by Ann Fields in the third minute of the match. Katie Fields put away a cross from Broderick in the 13th minute and found the net again in the 17th off a pass from Allison Auman to complete the first-half scoring.
The second half barrage included goals by Ann Fields, Maggie Gartman, Stephanie Carter and Brittney Dishner.
Others contributing assists were Malorie Potts and Dishner. Katelyn Burwell and Molly Hill performed the goalkeeping for the Pats with Hill recording the only save of the night for the home team in protecting the Patriots' ninth shutout of the season.
Scotland, 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the conference, is the only league team to score a goal on the Patriots, now 12-0 and 7-0. That was scored by Paige Gates off a corner kick by Kate Edwards in the Patriots' 3-1 overtime victory in Lauringburg last month.
Coming off a 6-0 win over Lee County Friday, the Pinecrest junior varsity squad battled Northwood to a 1-all tie in a match played Monday. Scoring for the jayvees was Lauren Leslie with the assist going to Kelly Guarente.
In the win over Lee County, Leslie had two goals for the Patriots, while Kristin Anderson, Kelsey Daoust, Andrea Pinchac and Jenny Craig each had one goal.
Daoust had two assists, while K. Anderson, Adrienne Anderson and Jenny Rocque each had one assist.
Guarente and Sarah Stewart shared goalkeeping duties for the Patriots in the win over Lee County. The jayvees are now 9-0-1 for the season.
