PATRIOTS GET NUMBER SIX

     The Pinecrest girls’ soccer team clinched its sixth straight conference title with an 11-0 victory at Westover Wednesday evening.
     Stephanie Carter recorded a hit trick and Erin Cooper and Anne Brannon each scored twice to lead the attack. Cooper and Jenn Schroeder each contributed two assists.
     The Patriots, now 12-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 16-1-1 overall, have a 2 and a-half game lead over second place Scotland County with two league games left to play. Monday, they play a varsity only contest at Seventy-First beginning at 6 p.m. They complete league play with a home match on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Douglas Byrd following a jayvee match at 5:30 p.m.
     After being held scoreless for the first 13 minutes Wednesday, the Patriots built a 5-0 lead by halftime.
     Lauren Broderick and Nikki Jones also found the net and Lora Smith and Catlynne Arreguin scored their first goals of the season. Others contributing assists were Allison Auman, Brannon and Molly McGahey.
     Katelyn Burwell was in the goal for the team’s 12th shutout of the season.
     In a battle for second place in the conference, Scotland defeated Richmond County 8-3 Monday night. Kate Edwards, who plays on the Sandhills Fury Classic team with a number of the Patriots, scored five goals for the Scots in the game.
     Also next week, the junior varsity (12-0) will make up a postponed game at 5 p.m. on Monday at Douglas Byrd. On Thursday, the varsity and junior varsity are scheduled to play non-conference matches at Chapel Hill.
