It took the Pinecrest girls’ soccer team 100 minutes to decide its first match with Jack Britt a month ago in Fayetteville. Monday night at John Williams Field, the victory was safely tucked away in the first 17 minutes. That’s how long it took the Patriots to build a 7-0 lead. Katie Fields scored three times and picked up two assists and Erin Cooper scored twice as the home team moved to 11-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 15-1-1 in all games. The Bucs fell to 6-4 and 8-6-1. “We knew that it was unnecessary to have to go into overtime the last time,” Pinecrest defender Krystal Haas said remembering the 3-2 game. “We came out tonight like we would against any hard team. We came out to win.” With the match just a minute old, Cooper received a ball from Fields and tucked it inside the right post. Two goals by Fields and one by her sister Ann made it 4-0 in the eighth minute. Goals by Anne Brannon (from Ann Fields), Cooper (unassisted) and Sara Cole from Lauren Broderick completed the opening spree. “They weren’t going to play around tonight,” Pinecrest coach Lorna Martin said. “Erin’s goal in the first minute got us started. When we played them the first time they (Bucs) scored first. I think Erin’s goal got our heads on straight.” The Patriots mounted attacks just as often in the second half, but the goals came at a slower pace with Stephanie Carter and Katie Fields finding the net. Katelyn Burwell and Catlynne Arreguin shared the shutout. Brannon contributed two assists along with her goal. The Patriots can clinch their sixth straight conference title (two shared) with a victory tonight at 7 p.m. at Westover. The junior varsity contest begins at 5:30 p.m. The Pinecrest jayvees (5-0 and 12-0) defeated Jack Britt 3-0. Porsche Maher scored twice and Kassi Rose once. Brittany Dishner and Megan Cole had assists. Jillian Murray and Casey Thompson were in the net for the team’s ninth shutout. <-Previous 4-24-03 at Douglas Byrd (W, 10-0) 4-30-03 at Westover (W, 11-0) Next-> |
