PINECREST DODGES SCOTS' JINX

When Kate Edwards scored for Scotland in the 10th minute Tuesday night at Pinecrest, Lorna Martin, coach of the Patriots, and Scot coach Colin McDavid were in charted waters.
Five times over the past five years, including three times in 2001, Scotland has scored first and made the goal hold up for a 1-0 victory.
“They score a quick goal and then they get back on their haunches and defend,” Martin said. “They’ve done that a lot of times.”
But just as happened in Laurinburg two weeks ago when Edwards also opened the scoring in a match Pinecrest eventually won 6-1, the Patriots responded quickly.
In the 13th minute, Anne Brannon crossed a ball from the right side into the penalty box. Following some heavy contact among players, Stephanie Carter found the ball rolling in front of her and put it away to tie the match at 1-1.
Five minutes later, Carter won a ball at the edge of the Scot third and lofted it high toward the goal. Goalkeeper Danielle Hutchins reached high and appeared to have it measured, but it glanced off her glove into the goal.
Carter almost made it a hat trick in a span of 10 minutes when she broke into the penalty area with the ball, but whiffed on her shot attempt. Three minutes before the intermission, Erin Cooper ran onto a cross on the ground by Jenny Fields and finished it for a 3-1 Patriot lead. It was Cooper’s 11th goal of the season and 44th of her varsity career.
That was all of the scoring as Pinecrest moved to 9-0 in the Mid-Southeastern Conference and 13-1-1 for all games. The Scots fell to 5-2-1 and 6-5-1.
McDavid was pleased that his team kept the Patriots scoreless in the second half.
“We had a nice game plan and we scored off it,” he said. “I asked my girls to control the ball and take it to the defenders a little more. That’s how Kate scored in both games. We knew they were going to get shots, but we didn’t expect to give up easy goals.
“Congratulations to Pinecrest. They have a great team and a good jayvee team coming up. The future is nice. With what I have, I’m very proud.”
Even with the loss, Scotland remains the only team from the Mid-Southeastern or old Southeastern conference with a series edge over the Pinecrest. Going back to 1994, the Scots have won 15 of the 29 matches.
Thursday, the Patriots were scheduled to travel to Douglas Byrd for a make-up game. The game originally scheduled for that date with Wilson Fike was cancelled. Monday, the Patriots entertain Jack Britt at 7 p.m., preceded by a junior varsity contest at 5:30 p.m.
The Pinecrest junior varsity improved to 11-0 with a 3-0 victory over the Scots on Tuesday and a 2-0 win at Northwood on Wednesday. Megan Cole, Brittany Dishner and Porsche Maher scored the goals, while Cole and Kassi Rose recorded assists against the Scots. Cole and Rose scored against the Chargers. Kasey Thompson and Maher minded the net Tuesday and Katelyn Burwell was there for the team’s eighth shutout on Wednesday.
