PATRIOT GIRLS TAKE FIRST PLACE IN SOCCER
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, April 11th, 2003
First place in the Mid-Southeastern Conference was up for grabs when the Pinecrest girls’ soccer team visited Scotland County Wednesday evening.
Seven minutes into the match, Kate Edwards powered a kick off the far post and into the net from 20 yards away for a 1-0 Scot lead. But the home team would not score again, and six Pinecrest players found the net on the way to a 6-1 victory.
The Patriots improved to 6-0 in the league and 10-1-1 overall to 4-1-1 and 5-4-1 for the Scots. Monday, the Patriots entertain Richmond County (6-1-2 and 3-1-1) at 7 p.m.
Pinecrest drew even at the 20-minute mark. Nikki Jones took possession of a weak clearance by the Scots off of a Sara Cole corner-kick and connected from 25 yards away. Stephanie Carter made it 2-1 in the 29th minute when she finished a deflected ball in the penalty area.
Anne Brannon knocked in her own rebound, making it 3-1 in the 55th minute. Goals by Ann Fields, Erin Cooper (from Cole) and Toni Giangrande (from Jenn Schroeder) completed the scoring.
Late in the game, Patriot goalkeeper Katelyn Burwell knocked away a penalty kick attempt by Edwards. Helping the freshman turn away the Scots for the final 73 minutes were defenders Allison Auman, Lora Smith, Krystal Haas, Heather Barnes and Stacey Blanchard. The Patriots have recorded four shutouts and allowed only three goals in the six conference matches.
Pinecrest coach Lorna Martin said that Barnes, who left the game with an arm injury in the first half, would probably have the arm X-rayed. Haas, who needed eight stitches for the gash she received in the head in last Friday night’s game against South View, was bandaged up and back in action.
