Where ever number 21 in the orange jersey went Friday night, number 21 in the home whites was sure to be close by. Pinecrest defender Krystal Haas and South View goal scoring machine Carolyn Lindsay locked horns literally. Their competition played a big part in the Patriot’s 1-0 overtime victory at John Williams Field. “That’s the only way to mark her,” said Haas, who was usually within a handshake away. “Otherwise she is going to get shots off.” The outcome of the soccer match between the leaders of the Mid-Southeastern and Two Rivers conferences often hung in the balance because of rough play by both squads. With just over a minute left in the first overtime, Patriot forward Lauren Broderick was brought down hard from behind by a Tiger defender about 30 yards away and to the right of the goal. Anne Brannon’s direct kick on the ground pierced the Tiger defense. Teammate Erin Cooper timed her run from the left perfectly and first-timed the ball inside the near post past goalkeeper Adrienne Rieley. “I didn’t know if I was going to get there or not,” Cooper said. “I got there and took the shot and it went in. I’m excited. The defense and Katelyn (goalkeeper Burwell) did such a great job.” The Patriots, now 9-1-1, seemed to relish the challenge of facing the state’s career goal-scoring leader with 201, only one of which has been scored against them in five matches over a four-year period. Exactly midway through the first half, Haas and Lindsay knocked heads at midfield sending both out of the game. The Tiger player returned about six minutes later. Haas, bleeding from a gash on her head, returned bandaged up at the start of the second half. “I didn’t realize I was bleeding so I wanted to get right back in there,” Haas said. “This was like the most important game of the season to me. We shut her (Lindsay) down the last two years — I wanted to make it three. I wanted to make sure I was a part of that.” While the Patriots were often able to mount attacks and took two shots for every one by the Tigers in the match, Haas and Lora Smith, during the 15 minutes Haas was out, denied Lindsay space in the middle of the field. The biggest threat posed by the senior was her corner-kicks, and Burwell came off her line time after time to help turn back that challenge. “Pinecrest did a good job of pressuring the ball and not letting our players turn,” Tiger coach Brian Edkins said. “Carolyn got her bell rung early. I’m not making excuses, but that kind of rattled her a little bit. It was a good game that could have gone either way.” As the clock wound down in the second overtime period, Heather Mitrisin and Lindsay were each fouled at the edge of the Patriot penalty box. On the first, Lindsay’s direct kick flew high over the Patriot wall and the goal. On the second, the clock expired before she could take the kick. Patriot coach Lorna Martin found out earlier in the day that she has been named the teacher of the year at the high school. “I’ve got a permanent smile,” she said. “It’s hard to single out any individual — it was a team effort. Katelyn (Burwell) played the best game I’ve seen her play. “It’s funny, the one thing we said we have to work on is dead ball situations. And that’s how we scored. It’s been a good day. And this has been a fairy tale ending.” Burwell had six saves and Rieley had 12 for the Tigers, now 10-1-2. Pinecrest, 5-0 in the conference, returns to league action with a 7 p.m. match at Douglas Byrd on Monday (junior varsity at 5:30 p.m.). The Patriot jayvees improved to 8-0 with a 2-0 victory over South View. Megan Cole and Bonnie Jonmoore scored the goals. <-Previous 4-2-03 vs Seventy-First (W, 9-0) 4-9-03 at Scotland County (W, 6-1) Next-> |
