PATRIOTS, WEATHER DERAIL FALCONS ON SENIOR NIGHT
By Dean Parziale: Special to The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 26th, 2007
Thunder, lightning and rain would shorten the boys' soccer match between Pinecrest and Seventy-First High School Wednesday night at the John Williams Athletic Complex, but not before the Patriots dumped the Falcons 5-0.
The storm also failed to prevent the school from honoring the six seniors on the Pinecrest squad during their last regular-season game. Pinecrest would finish the 2007 season perfect in Mid-Southeastern Conference play at 14-0 and with an overall record of 17-2-2.
The state 4-A soccer playoffs begin next week with Pinecrest earning a No. 1 seed and the right to entertain the Fuquay-Varina Bengals (12-5-3), the fourth seed from the Tri-7 Conference. The match will be held either Tuesday or Wednesday.
Honored at halftime with a mid-field ceremony with their parents, coach Larry Martin and Pinecrest Principal Joel County, were seniors Coby Kavanaugh, Brad McKeever, C.J. Phelps, Michael Hieronymus, Tyler Dawson and Jordon Howlett.
In a fitting gesture by Martin, Howlett, who was an all-conference player last year but unfortunately this past August needed surgery to repair a torn ACL, got to start and play in his only game of the season, getting a few touches on the ball before being substituted to a great round of applause by the crowd on hand.
Pinecrest's other seniors would set the tone early as, only two minutes in, Dawson found space in front of goal and lashed a 15-yard strike past the keeper for a 1-0 Patriot lead. Fifteen minutes later, Kavanaugh, a team captain, would find the lower-right corner of the net to add to the lead off a pinpoint pass from Hieronymus.
Hieronymus made it 3-0 at 25 minutes by unloading a bomb from 30 yards out to the upper-left corner.
Underclassmen took over the rest of the way, as sophomore Nik Ceraso found the net in a goal front scramble off a long throw by fellow sophomore Ethan Kavanaugh. Junior Tyler Herbst deposited the fifth in a nice solo effort up the middle of the field just before the half.
The match would not resume after the break, as lightning lit up the sky. However, the completed first half was enough to make the match official. McKeever was credited with the shutout in goal.
