JUNIOR SHINES ON NIGHT THAT BELONGS TO SENIORS
By Dean Parziale: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 27th, 2006
The Pinecrest boys' soccer team rode perfection to its 10th consecutive conference championship this season.
Wednesday's 9-1 win over visiting Douglas Byrd on Senior Night at Pinecrest left the Patriots with a 14-0 mark in Mid-Southeastern Conference matches, and a 21-1-1 overall mark.
On a chilly night at John Williams Field, family, friends and fans turned out to honor the eight seniors who were playing their last regular-season game for the Patriots. At a halftime ceremony, coach Larry Martin presented each senior a plaque recognizing their contributions to the program. The seniors' season isn't over yet, as Pinecrest will compete in the state 4-A playoffs that begin next week.
Although it was a night to honor seniors, junior Tyler Dawson would take center stage as he netted four goals for the home side.
Coby Kavanaugh opened the scoring 15 minutes in as he headed a Brandon Zoellner cross to the far post. Zoellner would add the second three minutes later as he tipped a 40-yard Jim Hobbs' effort into net, while running into the goal upright in the process.
Matt Sessoms would extend the lead to 3-nil 30 seconds later, finishing a Kavanaugh pass. Jordon Howlett dribbled the ball through a defender's legs and poked home the Patriots' fourth.
Dawson would then score his first goal at 30 minutes when he beat his defender and fired to the far post.
John Kropp would finish the first half scoring as time expired, threading one past the keeper off a Brandon Wilkins corner kick, giving the Patriots a 7-0 lead at the break.
Pinecrest keeper Glenn Holmes spent the first half turning away the infrequent Eagle chances.
Dawson would score all three Patriot second-half goals, blasting shots from 15 and 20 yards, and also finishing a self-made breakaway up the middle.
A breakaway goal by Douglas Byrd's flashy Brazilian striker would create the 9-1 final.
Pinecrest opens state play at home next week with a Wednesday match that starts at 7 p.m. The opponent will be the fourth seed out of the Two Rivers Conference.
