The Pinecrest boys' soccer team recorded its 20th victory of the season, downing the Falcons of Seventy-First High School 8-0 Monday night in a Mid-Southeastern Conference match played in Fayetteville.
The currently 9th ranked Patriots improved to 20-1-1 overall and a perfect 13-0 in conference contests.
Pinecrest will celebrate Senior Night tonight at 7 p.m. during its final regular-season game against Douglas Byrd High School. The Patriots have been led this season by eight seniors (Russell Stewart, Charlie Davis, Jim Hobbs, Silas Cole, Glenn Holmes, Brandon Zoellner, Karl Ainslie and Matt Sessoms).
Pinecrest scored early and often Monday with Coby Kavanaugh getting things started five minutes into the contest when he contained a loose ball before depositing it into net for the early lead. Zoellner would make it 2-0 at 10 minutes off a Thomas Goulden throw-in and Sessoms' cross into the box. Sessoms would extend the lead to 3-0 at 15 minutes, directing a Zoellner pass into goal.
Finally, Stewart would finish the first-half scoring at 33 minutes, steering a nice Sessoms feed past the keeper.
Holmes, playing in net for the Patriots, would be infrequently visited as the stout Pinecrest defense kept play in the opposition half. The comfortable lead would allow Patriot coach Larry Martin a look at next year's squad, as the seniors yielded to the underclassmen in the second half. Junior Jordon Howlett would score by rocketing a 25-yard shot past the keeper for a 5-nil Pinecrest lead.
Tyler Dawson would earn the sixth Pinecrest tally on his own as he beat the last defender 30 yards from goal, the ensuing breakaway neatly finished. Sophomores John Kropp and Brandon Wilkins would record the final two scores for Pinecrest, with winger Wilkins scoring in his first varsity action.
Junior C.J. Phelps in net the second half would preserve the shutout, with one standout play denying a 71st breakaway midway through the action.
Pinecrest will entertain home playoff games starting next week. The first matchup for the Patriots will be against the fourth place team from the Two Rivers Conference. The time and date is yet to be determined.
