PATRIOTS BEAT WOLVERINES
CONTRIBUTED, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, October 21st, 2005
The scoreboard said Pinecrest 17, Westover 0, but in some ways it was a no-win situation for the Patriots.
When you’re heading for a ninth consecutive conference title with a league record of 10-0, and clicking on all cylinders at 14-3-1 overall, do you hobble the team and tell them to sandbag, even against winless Westover?
Play your best match and the critics blast you for running up the score. Play keepaway and you’re not showing good sportsmanship. Either way you lose.
Pinecrest took the high road and played the match with the best they could offer to make it palatable for everyone.
The Patriots ran with their regular starting lineup, minus three injured players, for the first five minutes and built a 2-0 lead on two unassisted goals by Marco Gironda.
At that point, Pinecrest coach Larry Martin dropped three players back to stationary positions at the defensive 18, effectively reducing the match to a seven versus 11 contest, and retired most of his starters, replacing them with reserves and a quartet of junior varsity players.
The object of the game is to put the ball in the goal, and the new faces on the field continued to do that, building a 9-0 lead at the break, and adding eight more in the final period. In the final 10 minutes, Pinecrest played the ball in the midfield, with no further attempts to add to the score.
Westover had one shot on goal in the game that came on a free kick in the final period.
The Pinecrest tally lacked most of the familiar scoring names. David Adams, Michael Hieronymus and Tyler Dawson, playing up from the jayvee ranks, accounted for almost a third of the Patriot total with five goals.
Patriot goalkeeper Glen Holmes got a rest from his usual position and tried on some new shoes in the field where he picked up a hat trick.
The Pinecrest starters, for their part, enjoyed the match from the bench. There was no junior varsity match.
Pinecrest is now 11-0 in league play and 15-3-1 overall. The Patriots play their final home game Monday against Seventy-First at 7 p.m. Halftime activities will honor Pinecrest seniors.
