PATRIOTS STOP BUCS IN CONFERENCE ACTION
By Charlie Bergman, Sports Editor, The Pilot, Appeared Wednesday, October 19th, 2005
Pinecrest marooned the Jack Britt Buccaneers 5-0 in Mid-Southeastern Conference soccer action Monday night in Hope Mills.
Nursing a bench of sick and injured players, the Patriots put the rest of the roster to work.
“We were really the walking wounded out there tonight” said Pinecrest coach Larry Martin, “but our players stepped up and handled the situation with good results.”
Pinecrest attacked early as Travis Grasso pushed down the left side and ripped a hard shot from the left corner that was too hot for the Britt keeper to handle. As the ball hit the ground, senior forward Tommy Ransdell sneaked in and swept the dropped ball from the keeper’s feet for the score.
Michael White took the ball at the midfield stripe in front of the Britt bench and crossed into open space in the center ahead of Ransdell as he raced toward the goal.
Ransdell parked the ball in the back of the net to give the Pats a 2-0 advantage at the break.
Ransdell recorded the third piece of a hat trick in the second half on another Patriot transition built on a long left-to-right cross to junior forward Matt Sessoms. Sessoms penetrated deep into the right corner, then chipped back to Ransdell for the finish.
Britt packed 10 men into its defensive third for much of the second half, but Pinecrest continued to dissect the Buccaneer defense, striking two more times in the final minutes.
White muscled his way toward the right post with four minutes to play, then delivered to Sessoms, who drilled the left corner to stretch the Patriot lead to 4-0.
But the night would not end quietly for Britt, even with only seconds to play, as Pinecrest crowded the box for a final flurry that ended when Marco Gironda got a foot on the ball with 16 seconds to play and pushed the final score to 5-0. White’s assist on the goal was his third for the match.
Patriot goalkeeper Glen Holmes notched his eighth consecutive shutout and ninth for the season. Pinecrest keeps a solid grip on the top spot in the conference at 10-0 and moves to 14-3-1 overall.
David Adams led the Pinecrest junior varsity to a 3-0 win with a pair of goals and an assist. Gustavo Ocampo added another goal and contributed an assist.
