PATRIOT BOOTERS FACE MIDDLE CREEK
By Charlie Bergmann: Staff Writer, The Pilot, Appeared Friday, September 9th, 2005
The Pinecrest boys’ soccer team brings some understandable frustration into tonight’s 7 p.m. match at home against Middle Creek.
The Patriots are 1-3 on the season after Tuesday’s 3-0 defeat at Lee County.
Pinecrest has had plenty of scoring opportunities, but few goals to show for it during an eight-day period that also included losses to Fayetteville Academy (2-1) and Hoggard (1-0).
The Patriots trailed the Jackets 1-0 midway through the second half on Tuesday before giving up a couple of late goals.
“The 3-0 score doesn’t reflect the closeness of last night’s game,” Patriot coach Larry Martin said of the loss to the 15th-ranked Jackets. “We must have outshot them three to one. We started sending guys forward because I didn’t want to lose another game 1-0, and we didn’t.
“The guys played well and kept up their intensity. It was really a frustrating game.”
Middle Creek, 3-1, like Lee County, is a member of the Tri-Seven (4-A) Conference. The Mustangs’ only loss was 3-0 to fourth-ranked Sanderson. They defeated the Patriots 2-1 in a preseason scrimmage.
“They’re fairly athletic and will be a real challenge,” Martin says. “I think the key will be who has improved the most since we met in the scrimmage.”
One of the things the Patriot coach will be looking for from his team as it approaches conference play next week is better productivity in the offensive third of the field. The Patriots have scored only two goals in four matches.
“We need to be a little more composed in our finishing,” Martin says.
The Patriot junior varsity team (2-1-1) will take on the Mustangs in the 5 p.m. preliminary contest.
The jayvees played to a 1-1 tie at Lee County after suffering their first loss of the season at Hoggard by the score of 3-0 last Thursday.
