It was Sandhills Youth Soccer League night at Pinecrest Friday night and SYSL fans got what they came to see, a fast-paced match and a Pinecrest victory. The Patriots topped Wilson Fike’s Golden Demons in a 3-1 non-conference win. The Patriots advanced early when midfielder Travis Grasso rolled down the left side to make a quick, high right cross. Dalon White took the pass in the air and delivered a downtown rocket off the pivot to put the Pats up 1-0. Fike caught the Pinecrest defense with the back door open several minutes later when Tim Fedorow sneaked in off the right side though an open alley and knotted the score at one-all. Pinecrest did some tweaking at the break. “We possessed the ball and got a lot of shots, but things weren’t working,” said Pinecrest coach Larry Martin. Things did work in the second half. The Patriots moved ahead when Scott Phifer threaded a pass through traffic on a run to the box. Tommy Ransdell slipped in at the left post and tucked the ball in for the 2-1 advantage. Pinecrest got an insurance point with 12 minutes to play when Ransdell was fouled in a scramble in the penalty area, putting Michael White on the line for the penalty kick. White’s low bullet burned the net to give the Patriots a 3-1 lead. Martin confessed to some low level of frustration at his team’s performance. “I didn’t feel like everything went our way early, but we played well,” Martin said. “And things worked out.” The win improves Pinecrest to 6-2-2 overall and 3-1-1 in league play. Pinecrest has a busy week ahead with three Mid-Southeastern Conference matches on tap. The team travels to Douglas Byrd on Monday and to Scotland on Wednesday. The Patriots host Westover Tuesday in a match postponed last week. Tuesday’s match is scheduled for 6 p.m. <-Previous 9-29-04 vs. Seventy-First, (W 13-0) 10-4-04 at Douglas Byrd (W, 12-0) Next-> |
