The Pinecrest stat sheet from Monday’s match at Douglas Byrd could have been mistaken for the team roster with nine players in the scoring column in a 12-0 Mid-Southeastern Conference rout. The Patriots opened the floodgates early when Scott Phifer capped a maelstrom around the box with a bull’s eye goal off a Chris Coxen pass. G. R. Horton spotted the next point from front and center 10 yards out on Joe Johnson’s feed, then came back for seconds moments later, scoring on a breakaway set in motion by Logan Creque’s steal on a Douglas Byrd throw-in from the Pinecrest defensive third. Marco Gironda picked up the rebound off a Caleb Miles shot and pulled the trigger from six yards out for a Pinecrest goal. Miles got the next scoring turn when he collected a Joe Johnson delivery from the short midfield, then dribbled through traffic to take the Byrd keeper head to head for the goal. Greg Pattis tied the bow on the first period with a pair of goals that pushed the halftime tally to 7-0. A turn of the head was enough for Pattis on the first goal, scoring with the header on Andy Tagliareni’s corner kick. Pattis was open when Omar Abusamra lofted a free kick into his path to point the way for the point that ended the half. Abusamra kept the two-for-one program moving with a couple of goals of his own, first with an assist from Daniel Johnson following a pass deflected off a defender, then from five yards out behind another Coxen pass. Michael White got a boot behind the ball late in the second period when Travis Frazier crossed the ball from deep in the right corner. It was Joe Johnson’s turn to score late in the period when Abusamra advanced the ball through the midfield on a diagonal route to the right for Johnson’s shot. Coxen made it an even dozen for the Patriots with an unassisted strike from the right corner to close out the match. Pinecrest coach Larry Martin cranked up the player rotation wheels midway through the first period. Even with the shuffle on the field, the Patriots rained 48 shots on the Eagles. Byrd had 2 shots on goal and less than five minutes of possession. Pinecrest improves to 7-2-2 overall and 4-1-1 in league play. Byrd drops to 0-6-0 and 0-4-0. The second-place Patriots trail Jack Britt in the conference standings by one-and-a-half games. Pinecrest plays at Scotland tonight. <-Previous 10-1-04 vs. Wilson Fike, (W 3-1) 10-5-04 vs. Westover (W, 14-0) Next-> |
