THE DOUGHTON PARK SUNSETS

October 17

I arrived at Doughton Park the afternoon of October 17, 2005.After setting up camp I went to the Doughton Park Coffee Shop for an early supper.
As I finished eating I realized the sun was about to set.I paid the check and took off in the car to find a good spot for viewing the sunset.I sped back
and forth a short distance on the parkway looking for a good west facing overlook but had no luck.By the time I discovered a great viewing area, at
the back of the picnic ground just across the road from the coffee shop, I was too late. These first two photographs were taken just after sunset.

The morning of the 18th I broke camp, loaded the car and headed north toward Virginia.I spent time at The Blue Ridge Music Center and did a lot of
driving and some picture taking.I had a reservation to spend the next two nights at the Bluffs Lodge back at Doughton Park.By the time I returned
to check in there it was 5:40pm.I got my things squared away in my room and headed back to the picnic ground to try again to catch the sunset.I still
had plenty of time so went to check out the trail from the picnic ground to the top of Bluff Mountain. The sign said it was only .2 miles.I walked on up.
There is an awesome sweeping view of the mountains and sky to the west from atop Bluff Mountain. But this evening that view of the sky was obstruc-
ted. When I arrived at the top I was dismayed to find a completely chemtrail covered western sky.I stayed to photograph the sunset anyway. It was in-
teresting but hardly the show I had anticipated.

October 19

Wednesday the 19th I spent the day exploring back roads off the parkway and visiting the Moses Cone estate. But I made certain I was back on Bluff
Mountain in time for sunset. It would be my last chance to see a decent one from that perfect vantage point. The third time was a charm.Wednesday's
sunset was a keeper.
