Chapter Forty - We Love Her

People began to scream and run for the large double doors that were the emergency exit as smoke started to billow into the hall. Zac was pushed in all directions.

"C.J!" He screamed as he was pulled out of the hall by a large boy. He struggled against the crowd as he tried to get back inside, but it was impossible. "SHIT!" Zac yelled and he raced around to the front entrance to the hall. He saw that Fire trucks were there already. He also noticed flames bursting out of windows. He ran inside and started up the stairs but someone from behind stopped him. "HEY!" Zac cried out.

"You're not going anywhere son" A fireman said, taking Zac by the arm to try and lead him downstairs.

"BUT C.J's UP THERE!" Zac screamed at him. "MY GIRLFRIEND! YOU HAVE TO GET HER!" He cried frantically, struggling from the fireman's grip he started up the stairs again, eager to get to C.J.

"Hold on! We'll get her. Don't worry" The fireman said, pulling Zac out of the burning building.

"NO! LET ME GET HER!" He screamed.

"Come on! open god damn you!" C.J cried, pounding her fists on the locked door. She could hear the frightened screams of people below her and the faint smell of smoke was in the air. "ZAC!" She screamed. She was starting to get scared herself. She had locked the door when he left in case some other couple had decided to do the same thing as herself and Zac, and now she couldn't get the door open. "SOMEONE HELP ME!!! ZAC! COME BACK!! I'm scared!" She cried, whispering the last part to herself as she sank down to her knees. She then sat down on her butt and hugged her knees, convinced that someone was going to come and get her. She had heard the sirens of the fire trucks so she knew that help was there. "You have so many relationships in this life, only one or two will last.. you go through all the pain and strife then you turn your back and they're gone so fast" C.J sang to try and calm herself. It wasn't working. C.J then noticed smoke seeping into the classroom through the space that was between the floor and the bottom of the door. She felt the fear rising up inside her and she stood up. "HELP ME PLEASE!" C.J screamed as she kicked at the door. Smoke was filling the room fast and C.J started to cough. She was unable to breathe and the smoke was thick. It's so thick C.J thought as she lost consciousness.

"JAYMI! JAYMI WHERE ARE YOU!" Kayla shrieked as she ran through the crowd, searching for her twin. So many people were screaming for others, Kayla wished they would shut up so she could find Jaymi. Suddenly Kayla ran into the back of someone. "Shit! I'm sorry!" She said and started to run away when that someone grabbed her arm.

"Kayla!"

"Brian! have you seen Jaymi?" She asked him frantically. He shook his head.

"Have you seen C.J? I can't find her anywhere!" Brian said, his voice filled with worry and fear. Kayla shook her head in response and grabbed Brian's hand.

"Come on! we have to find everyone!" She cried.

"C.J! WHY HAVEN'T THEY FOUND HER YET? I TOLD THEM WHERE SHE WAS!" Zac screamed at the two firemen who were holding him back. Suddenly Zac heard someone yell that the fire was out. A hand then came down on Zac's shoulder. He looked up into Jaymi's tear stained face.

"ZAC! Where is everyone?" She asked him.

"I don't know! Jaymi... C.J is still inside!" He cried. He didn't hear Jaymi's response to his statement. He watched as two firemen appeared, they walked out of the entrance to the school. One of them was carrying a girl. "C.J!" Zac screamed and ran forward as the fireman set C.J on the grass and two paramedic's started CPR on her. Zac stood helplessly. Watching them work frantically on her, trying to revive her. Zac felt Jaymi's presence beside him. He turned and saw her crying as she stared down at C.J's lifeless body. Before Zac knew it, Kayla, Isaac, Taylor and Brian had appeared and the six of them stood silently. Then a paramedic spoke softly to the other. He got up and then soon returned with a sheet.

"No... no no no no SHE CAN'T BE DEAD!" Brian yelled, dropping down beside C.J, taking her body in his arm's he held her close and rocked back and forth.

"I'm sorry" The paramedic said.

"NO! SHE'S NOT DEAD!" Brian screamed. He jumped up after setting C.J's body on the grass. He then took off, running. Kayla tried to stop him but Isaac told her to leave him.

"C.J..." Zac said, sitting down. He reached for her hand but the paramedic loaded C.J's body onto a stretcher. "What are you doing?" Zac asked, looking up. "Don't take her away! Please! Don't take her away! Not yet!" Zac cried, trying to run after the paramedic but Isaac grabbed Zac and wrapped his arm's around his brother. Kayla and Jaymi had their arm's around each other and both were sobbing for the loss of C.J. Taylor went to Zac and Isaac and stood there as Isaac let Zac cry. "They can't take her" He sobbed. "They can't take her" He repeated.

"They have to Zac" Isaac said, silent tears of his own running down his face.

"They can't! She's my girlfriend! I love her Ike! doesn't she know that?" Zac asked, pulling away from Isaac, he searched his brothers eye's for the answer.

"I'm sure she does" Kayla said, coming up beside Zac. He turned to her and hugged her. "We all love her" Kayla choked out before bursting into sobs. The group left the grassed area and Isaac went in search of a phone, there was no way he could drive home. He found one and dialled his home number.

"Mom?... something terrible has happened. We need a lift home."

The End.
