I saw Shawn Colvin live many times when I was a student at Southern Illinois University back in the '70s. Even at her young age back then, she already had a voice like an angel. She sings with an honesty and conviction that is best appreciated live. If you haven't seen her in concert, catch her the next time she comes near your city.
Live '88
These tracks were recorded live, before Shawn signed with Columbia. Even though these songs are already on Steady On and Fat City, This CD is still a good buy. the live versions are a much better representation of Shawn's persona (Aura, spirit, essence, call it what you will. The live tracks capture it better). If you can't get to her live show, this CD is the next best bet.
Steady On
Shawn's first major label recordings. She is excellent as usual, and John Leventhal's ethereal, almost mystical guitar work enhances the already beautiful melodies that Shawn sings. Listen for Bruce Hornsby on piano in "Something to Believe in".
Fat City
A Great CD! Not just because of Shawn, but some great ensemble work by the other musicians. David Lindley on slide, Bruce Hornsby on Piano and backing vocals, Mary Chapin Carpenter on backing vocals, Bela Fleck on Banjo, and of course John Leventhal on guitar.
A Few Small Repairs
By the way, That's Lyle Lovett on harmony vocals on "The Facts About Jimmy".
