Don't Listen To My Laughter

a poem by Audrey Nelson

Don’t listen to my laughter
It only hurts too much to cry.
I say that I’m alright and
Everything is fine.
Ignore my words and listen to my eyes.
You will see dreams that have vanished
And lost hope of their return.
I used to take for granted what I
Now must leave behind.
It isn’t a matter of "God, why me?”
For I don’t see myself as undeserving
Or better than anyone else.
It’s realizing what has been thought of
For so long is now to be shut away.
Finding new open doors is not
As easy as people say.
For they are harder to enter
Than others were to exit.
