Chapter 2 of It’s a Backstreet Thang
Oh, he was good looking. He wore jean shorts and a cut off athletic shirt, about the same as the other guys, but I couldn’t figure out what Nick was wearing. He had white shorts that looked like they had been run in the washing machine with a red shirt on "Hot". His shirt was grey and he had a jean vest that looked as though a dog got hold of it. His hair was braided into a multitude of small braids, which I thought looked very cool. His sneakers were black, and he had a cap on. I started laughing. The cap was black and of Orlando Magic.
"Orlando Magic? What are you thinking? The Bulls are the bomb!" I said as I snatched it off and ran with it, grinning. I was wearing shorts and a dark green tank top, with an open white button down jean vest. I had a hat on that was dark grey and said "Chicago Bulls" in navy blue stitching. He started chasing me, yelling and waving his arms, and I ran near Kevin, cutting hard to the left behind him. I heard a *thud* and looked back to see Nick sprawled on the floor. AJ had tackled him and was waving me on.
I ran next to Brian, yelling as he picked me up and ran from Nick. He ran in erratic circles, dodging and feinting. Nick had stopped running long ago and now stood, watching. Brian finally let me down, and started tickling me. "HEY!! STOP THAT!! HELP!!!!!! AJ, HOWIE HELP!!!! SOMEBODY!!" I screamed, laughing, as I fell to the ground. Brian then grabbed me up and passed me off to Kevin, who grabbed me and ran silently. The other guys had, by now, shut up. I looked at Brian and he wore this huge grin on his face, and I knew he set the whole thing up. I didn’t say anything, but held on tightly, and smiled. "We just might end up together after all" I thought.
Finally he put me down on my feet but didn’t let me go. Brian motioned the others to "git out", as he would say. They all turned and started walking to a huge elm tree, talking quietly. I grinned and said softly "You know they set us up, right?" He chuckled and nodded. I leaned up and softly kissed his cheek, and then heard "Kevin and ‘Becca sittin’ in a tree...." I rested my forehead on his shoulder and muttered "Oh God." And then we heard "K-I-S-S-I-N-G...." I turned and yelled "SHUT UP!!!!!" at the same time Kevin did, and we started laughing. I thought about something and turned to him, saying "Would you miss the noise if I tore their voice boxes out?"
He laughed and said "Well, Nick and AJ, you can tear out, but I would miss my cuz, and Howie would find a way to make noise, knowing him." Chuckling, we both started walking to the tree, holding hands. Brian was sitting in the tree and grinning like a Cheshire cat. I swiped at him and he dodged it, laughing. He nodded towards the courts, "Who are the others?" I said "Oh man! I forgot I brought them here!" I whistled shrilly and waved the 7 teens over. They jogged over, laughing and pushing each other. The other guys had stopped in their tracks and were now staring at them.
"Boys, meet Janice, Suzan, Stormi, and Lydia. The guys are Joey, Russell, and Danny. Girls and guys, meet Nick, AJ, Brian, Kevin, and Howie D. They’re the ones who were crazy enough to accept my offer of playing ball today," I said laughing. Lydia, a tall girl with toffee colored skin, black hair, and dark brown eyes, stepped up and stared at Brian for a second, then grinned and said "So these are those crazy guys ehh?" Brian grinned and said in his best western-cowboy-in-the-city accent "Yep, little lady, that would be us." Lydia laughed and said "You didn’t say they had a sense of humor!" Lydia was about as tall as me, with toffee colored hair, skin that tanned very easily and stormy grey eyes. She was from California. Suzan, a girl a little shorter than Lydia, with long brown hair highlighted blond in places, deep green eyes, and light tan skin, who was from Louisiana, grinned, then blushed as Howie said to her, "What’s a sweet lookin’ girl like you doin here? Shouldn’t you be with your boyfriend?" Laughing, she shook her head and said "Me? A boyfriend? That’s a good one." Howie’s mouth dropped and he said, feigning a shocked look, "You don’t have a boyfriend? Wow, the boys here must be crazy." She grinned and blushed.
Stormi was talking to me, while I was watching AJ. He was staring at her, his mouth open. I could understand why. She was tall and lean, with Asian looks, dark almond shaped eyes and long black hair that she could fix in every possible way you could imagine. At this moment she had about half of it in a loop held with bobby pins on her head, with chunks of glitter and purple hair mascara. On anyone else it would look hideous, but she made it work. She wore black cutoff shorts with fabric painted flowers and butterflies on the pockets, and red Lycra tights underneath. She had "Stormi" in green fabric paint on the front part. Her shirt was a sky blue body suit and she had a white jean jacket with cut-off sleeves.
Joey, Russell and Danny were watching us talk. Joey was watching Stormi intently. I grinned cause I knew he had a thing for her. Joey was about 6’3, with jet black hair in small ringlets that always looked wet. His eyes were a dark grey that changed colors when he changed moods. Just watch for when they turn almost black. Stay away from him then, because he had a temper that matched his eyes, always changing and sometimes not for the best, but for the most part he was an easy going guy.
Russell was the exotic looking one, with dark skin, very short black hair and chocolate colored piercing eyes. He was about as tall as Joey, but much more easy going. It took alot to make him mad. Girls were crazy over him, and I thought he was cute, but it was just a friendly thing between me and him.
Danny was the one I was crazy over. He was a little taller than me, with blond hair, blue eyes and glasses. He was the shy one of the group, didn’t really talk alot, especially to me, but I didn’t take it personally.
I looked at them and said "Well are we gonna play ball or just hang around here?" I grabbed the ball and passed it to AJ, who ran and made a lay-up. It easily went in and he grinned an I’m the bomb grin. We had paired off into teams of 5, which consisted of Stormi, Brian, Howie D., Janice and Nick, while the other team was Suzan, Lydia, Kevin, AJ, and me. I grabbed the rebound and passed it to Suzan, who was open, and she passed the ball to Lydia, where it was promptly stolen by Brian. He attempted a three pointer, but AJ reached up and flipped the ball back away towards Lydia.
It continued like this for about an hour, with taunts and jeers flying from both teams. We won 17 - 5. The conditions were that the loser team had to buy ice cream, and we all jumped in the cars, headed to the nearest Dippin’ Dots. Kevin, Janice, Brian, Howie D., and me were in Janices’ car, while Suzan, Lydia, Stormi, AJ, and Nick were in the guys’ car. We all chatted easily, but every now and then I caught Kevin stealing glances at me from his place behind the wheel and smiling. By some strange coincidence (or no?) I had gotten the passenger seat.

Nick’s View
They had it bad. Even from 10 feet away in the other car I could tell. Who couldn’t? I grinned and said to no one in particular, "We’ve GOT to get those two together." Bone glanced at me from his place behind the wheel (they didn’t trust me, what a joke) and said "Ya, I know. I noticed a long time ago." He chuckled and said "But they might not like us meddling in their love lives, ya know?" Hmmm. He WAS right, as usual. "Well, lets not call it ‘meddling’. Let’s call it ‘getting two people who are obviously wonderful as a couple together’, I said. Bone raised his eyebrows and said "Wow! You said a coherent sentence. I’m proud of ya." I chuckled and said "For real though. They NEED to be together. It’s totally obvious."
Stormi looked up and said "Ya, we’ve noticed too. She’s never acted this way around ANYONE. She’s hooked." She chuckled. "Even a blind mouse could see it." AJ laughed and said "I’m not so sure about that." She looked at him and said "And why not?" He looked at her, grinning sweetly. I’ve learned to look out for the "sweet grin" thing. It usually means trouble.
Yep, I was right. "Well, a blind mouse is blind, so he can’t see. A blind mouse couldn’t see it. Maybe smell, but not see." She looked at him and said "Okay, he can smell it, Mr. Badass." He grinned and said "Why, thank you my dear," while taking off his funky leopard print cowboy hat and mock bowing.Stormi grabbed the hat and hit his head with it, causing us to roar laughing. I looked up to see the car ahead of us turning off into Dippin Dots and we slowed to turn with it.
Kevin’s View
We turned into Dippin’ Dots with the black low-rider right behind us. I pulled into a spot next to the door and grinned as the other car had to circle to find a spot, then, strangely enough, they had to pull into the lot next door, a McDonald’s. I laughed and got out, then helped Rebecca out. She grinned and said "Thank you, Mr. Richardson." I bowed and said "At your service Ma’am." She giggled and said "Oh ya huh?" I nodded. "Yep, I am."
The others came walking over from the other parking lot, AJ grinning and tickling Lydia, to which she promptly shrieked and ran faster towards us. She ducked behind ‘Becca and shrieked "Help! Save me!" Rebecca laughed and ducked behind me, grabbing me around my waist and maneuvering me so AJ couldn’t get to her. "Whoah!!! I’m not in this! Rok, help!" Rok came over and grabbed Becca, then grinned and tickled her quickly, making her wiggle. Unfortunately, the manager came out and told us "You kids (KIDS?!) will have to either stop or go somewhere else." That stopped our fun.
We walked into Dippin’ Dots and ordered our ice cream. AJ and Stormi both had strawberry Dippin’ Dots, Suzan and Howie D. had vanilla, Brian and Lydia had blueberry, Russel and Danny had peach, Janice and Nick had mint chocolate chip, and ‘Becca and me had chocolate. We all sat at different tables pretty close to each other, but ‘Becca and me were the only one’s with a table all to ourselves.
I couldn’t help but watch her eat her ice cream. She was so pretty, her hair turned a light red with blond highlights in the interior of the building. I smiled when she caught me looking at her, and said "What? Have I grown a third eye or something?" Chuckling, I said "No, you’re just so pretty. I can’t help it." She grinned and blushed a deep red, which I thought made her look like a queen. I wrote her a note on a napkin, which I slid over to her. It read You wanna go see someplace? I’ll be good, I promise.
She smiled and got a pen out of her purse, then wrote something. She passed it to me, and the note read What kinda "someplace"? I looked up at her for just a split second before I wrote It’s a secret place. I go there when I wanna get away from it all. She read it and her pen flew over the napkin. It now read But where? Ok, should we tell the boys? She looked over at them when I looked up, then wrote at least tell them we’re going? I shook my head and wrote Nah, it’s ok. They know we’ll be safe. She shrugged and nodded, then mouthed "ok"
We got up and pushed our chairs under, then walked out through a back entrance.
AJ’s View
I saw them going out through the back way out of the corner of my eye. I looked at Brian, who was next to me, and whispered "Now where do you think they’re going?" He looked up and shrugged. "Who knows, with them. They’ll be ok." I wasn’t so sure, but hell, they were practically adults, Kev sure was, and I thought that Becca was mature, so I didn’t worry over it anymore.
Rebecca’s View
I followed Kev through the back doors, then through an alleyway. It was evening, about 5 o’clock, and it was eerily quiet. I jumped slightly as Kevin took my hand, then blushed as he looked at me. "Sorry bout that," he said. I shook my head. "That’s ok. I just wasn’t expecting it," I said, smiling. He chuckled and said "You’ll love this place. It’s beautiful. It’s only about 15 minutes from here too." I grinned and laced my fingers through his, then said softly "I think I’d like it."
We started walking as I looked up at the stars, Kevin watching me. It was a clear, dusky night. The stars were just twinkling, looking like small burning fires. Suddenly Kevin pointed up and said "Look, Orion’s Belt. See it?" I looked up and strained my eyes, but couldn’t find it. "No, I can’t see it." He stopped and kneeled down a little, pointing at a 45º angle. "Do you know where the North Star is?" he asked. I nodded, looking. "Yeah, right there," I said, pointing. He nodded and then said, "The three little stars that look kinda reddish, you see those?" I searched, and said "Right next to the North Star, right?" He nodded again and said "That’s Orion’s Belt. Those three reddish lookin’ stars." I smiled and nodded. "Cool. I can find Orion’s Belt," I said laughing. "That and the North Star are the ONLY constellations that I’ll ever find." He looked at me, and said, "I doubt that," so softly I almost thought he didn’t say it. He looked down at me and wrapped his arms around my waist, then asked "Can I kiss you?" I looked up at him, and felt him tremble against me. I smiled and nodded, then tilted my head up as he brushed his lips against mine.
He smiled and gently squeezed my fingers, then said "Let’s go. It’s only a few more minutes. Are you sure you wont fall asleep?" I nodded and he said "I wouldn’t mind carryin’ you, ya know." I laughed and looked up at him, a smile on my face. "Are you sure, Mr. Richardson?
I smiled and laughed softly, tugging him down next to me. My hands played over his long fingers, then he gently squeezed my hand. I grinned and yawned, leaning my head against him. He looked down, his brows furrowing, "You okay?" I nodded. "Ya, just sleepy. What time is it?" He looked at his watch, then said "11:00." I snapped awake. "WHAT?!? Oh shit they’re gonna kill us!! Should I call them?" I said. He shook his head. "No, they know we’re ok. Besides they’re probably asleep by now. I know a place we can go to sleep if you want."
I nodded. "That is sounding better by the second. I’m exhausted. I think some sleep is in order." He smiled and picked me up, much to my surprise. I opened my mouth to protest, thought better of it, and kissed him instead. I felt him jerk slightly in surprise, then he relaxed against me, his free arm encircling my waist protectively.
