Chapter Nine

Summer finally got out of bed at 1:00 when the phone rang.
"Hello?" she asked groggily.
"Hi, is this Summer?" a perky voice asked.
"Ye-aah, who's this?" Summer said suspiciously.
"This is Mandah Johnson. You know, we met at the game last night?"
Summer groaned inwardly. "Yeah, I remember you. What's up?"
"Well, I was wondering if you wanted to go shopping or something."
"Oh, sorry, I can't. I just woke up, believe it or not, and I have some relatives to visit." Summer felt guilty as she told her white lie.
"Oh," Mandah said sadly. "Maybe some other time."
"Yeah, maybe. Well, bye."
"Good-bye."
Summer hung up and threw a shoe at the wall. "Ooo...that son of a--he planned this whole thing! I hate him! He can just kiss my butt!" She sat down on the floor and leaned up against the bed. "Oh, who am I kidding? I don't hate him. I don't even dislike him. I really like him. A lot. Oh, why do i always put myself through this? I'll never feel better unless I tell him how I feel. Yeah! That's what I'll do! And WHY am I talking to myself again? I am going truly insane." Summer grabbed her robe and went to the bathroom to take a shower.

*RING RING* *RING RING*

Summer ran out of the bathroom, complaining. "They always wait until I'm in the bathroom to call. These hotels seriously need answering machines." She picked up the phone. "Hello?"
"Why were you so mean to Mandah? What's your problem, anyway?"
"What's MY problem? I think you should be asking yourself the same thing. When we first met, you acted all interested and stuff. Now, all you do is yell at me. So, Nicky, YOU are the one with a problem."
Nick sighed. "Can I come over?"
"I can't stop you, can I?"
"No." *CLUNK*
Summer threw on some clothes and tried to straighten up the room. After about 5 minutes, Nick knocked on the door. Summer answered it and let him in.
"Well?"
"Why can't we just be friends, Summer? Isn't that what you wanted?"
"Nick, when we first met, you felt something. Don't deny it, because I felt it, too. Back on that plane, we had something. Then, you lied to me, and I was willing to look past that. Then, I found out, along with the rest of the country, that you had a girlfriend! How do you think that makes me feel? We could have had something so great, you know. You're just too blind to understand that."
"You know what? I DO see it. But I'm already in a great relationship right now."
"Do you love her?"
"What?"
"It's a simple question."
"Why are you asking me this?"
"If you did, you'd say so."
"Summer, I don't need this. I came over here to start a friendship, but that's obviously not happening. I'll see ya around," Nick said as he left.
