BIOGRAPHY
Brief Bio: We begin this grand epic tale of lust, power, greed, and.......no
wait this is not right, that is someone else I am thinking of. We begin
this grand epic tale of one of the best So, we begin this epic tale with that fateful trip to Nashville, when at the tender age of 14, Patty accompanied by her brother Roger and met country legend, Porter Wagoner. Patty auditioned songs from her little folder of songs, that she had been writing, including "Sounds of Loneliness", which would eventually be included on her first album. Porter Wagoner, who by the way, has a very sharp eye for talent, (After All he gave us Dolly Parton) introduced Patty to another future country legend, and recent Country Music Hall Of Fame Inductee, Dolly Parton, to whom Patty credits as one of her strongest influences. Porter was so impressed by Patty's talent he invited her and Roger to spend that weekend in Nashville and attend the Grand Ole Opry. Soon, Patty found herself, over the next few years, hangin' with Porter and Dolly on weekends, ate dinner with them, traveled with them, and learned a great many lessons about music from them. Most importantly Patty learned those deep dark and mysterious makeup tips from Dolly. Patty soon joined the Wilburn Brothers to be their chick singer, when their other chick singer left to pursue those greener pastures known as a solo career, and as a songwriter for their that publishing company. You may have heard of this singer, she has had some success, Loretta Lynn. For those new to the wonderful world of Patty Loveless music, she and Loretta are distant cousins. Patty spent the next few years being the chick singer in the Americountry Express, a band with the Wilburn Brothers, touring with them and eating dinner with them. But, there were no make up tips, these were manly men, not girlie men, and what do manly men know about make up? After a few years with the Wilburn Brothers, Patty departed Nashville for several reasons. One was believing this pursuit for a record deal was not going to happen, and the other was for personal reasons. Because I am omnipotent, or maybe not, we shall now buckle our seat belts, and with the curse of modern technology warp ahead, or back depending on what year you are in now, to the year 1985. Patty holding on to Nothin' But The Wheel returns to Nashville at her brothers urging, to once again pursue her dream. Roger tells Patty that Some Morning Soon she will become the Honky Tonk Angel of Nashville. To which Patty replies, Go On Roger If You Think this is to be, I'm On Your Side. Using stealth and covert means that would make the CIA wet their collective pants, Patty's brother Roger sneaks into MCA records to seek out record producer Tony Brown. Roger was able to not only meet with Tony, he was able to play a demo tape that Patty recorded. Tony was so impressed, as is everyone who hears Patty sing, he made Roger promise not to play this tape for anyone. We are unsure at this point, but that request may have also included their own mother. As we all know, great epic's need a good villain to propel As we peek in on our girl Patty, she is shaking her bootie, or groove thing with glee. She has just signed Once In A Lifetime record deal she has dreamed of, secured for her by brother Roger, who is now her manager. Just how this deal came about, considering the resistance that Snidely Bowen put, up is quite simple. For, you see, Patty had on her side, two very, very, very successful and persistent producers from MCA who believed in her, Tony Brown and Emory Gordy Jr. With Tony and Emory on her side, and coming close to quitting unless Snidely signed her, Patty became MCA's newest artist in the summer of 1985. On October 25, 1985, Patty Loveless was UNLEASHED upon the world of country music, her first single Lonely Days, Lonely Nights missing yoooouuuuu, with all my miiiiight, wanting yoooouuuuu to hold me tiiiight........I know, I know, I cannot carry a tune in a bucket, so you will just have to suffer. One of two things happened which caused this song not to rocket up the charts. The first is lack of promotion, which seems far outside the realm of possibilities, since these people are paid obscene amounts of money to do just that very thing, promote. The second most plausible possibility, is the radio had not been invented, as of yet. Think about it, without the radio how could you hear the song to request it. The following single to be released "Wicked Ways" also received little airplay on the radio which had yet to be invented. But wait........little did Jimmy Whiplash know, is that Patty was in possession of top secret plans which called for the invention of radio. I'm sorry about that, it was not top secret plans for the invention of radio, but a self penned country song. Yeeeeesssss!!!!! my unwilling captive readers, Patty pulled out the big one, the song I Did. (this was on the demo.) This was the one, this song caused radio to be invented, people went out in droves to buy radio's just to hear this song. The stock market boomed, the economy boomed, companies made tons and tons of money, making tons and tons of radio's just so this song that we Can't Get Enough of, would be heard. This song sped up the charts so fast that it burst into flames, well, maybe not flames, but smoldering is a good possibility. But wait.......MCA Records, and Snidely Whiplash gave a collective gasp and said, "NO!! NO!! THIS CAN'T BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Just because this song brought forth the booming economy, caused the stock market to soar, which by the way, we made tons of money from, and caused radio to be invented, which made us even tons more money, which we used to promote other artists, She sings COUNTRY!!!! How can a song that she wrote herself do better than our more established pop singers?!?!?!?!?!?! OOOOOOOhhhh the HOOOOOOOOORROR OF IT ALL!!!!!!! What shall we dooooooooooo!?!?!?!" So, with the mighty MCA Records brought to their knees, by the little country song that could, and realizing that they really had no choice, and realizing that they must appease the out of control rabid group known as Patty Loveless fans, MCA made Patty an offer she obviously did not refuse. You pull your single I Did from radio and we will give you and album deal, and that can be the first single released from the album. How long it took Patty to say "sure dude" or something to that effect, will bake the noodles of scholars and great thinkers for generations to come. (since I fall in to neither category, I really don't care, she said yes, and that is all I care about.) On October 1, 1987 Patty Loveless was once again UNLEASHED upon the world of country music, with her self titled debut album Patty Loveless. With the release of this album came a couple of busy years for Patty. Between 1987-88 Patty appeared at the Wembley Festival in jolly ole England both years, took a train to Germany and Switzerland for more festivals, did 29 shows in 30 days on the west coast, toured with Kenny Rodgers, was inducted into the Grand Ole Opry on June 11, 1988, and promoted Justin Boots. This last one was to keep her in sturdy footwear for her busy schedule. So, sit down, buckle up, and hang on, my rabid torch burning, pitch fork carrying readers, it is time to embark on our sentimental journey through the albums of the soon to be country legend herself. |
