Where?
Ben grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. However, since the members of Ben Folds Five all lived in Chapel Hill (about 75 miles from Winston-Salem) when the band formed, it is often reported that he is from Chapel Hill. At least two articles in the archive dubbed Ben a "Chapel Hill native."
In all honesty, I'm confused on this point, and I don't know for a fact that Ben didn't live in Chapel Hill at some point during his youth. In a December 2001 interview on WFUV, Ben agrees (or merely chooses not to disagree??) that he grew up in Chapel Hill:
WFUV: You know it's a long way from Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which is I guess where you were raised?
Ben Folds: Yeah.
WFUV: These days living in Adelaide Australia?
Ben Folds: Yeah.

On one hand, I've heard that Ben lived in Winston-Salem until he graduated from high school; on the other hand, I've heard that Ben's family moved a lot, though it's not clear if they moved within the same town or elsewhere in the state. In another interview, Ben says that Chapel Hills is musically his home:
You now live in Adelaide, Australia with your life and kids. How much of a culture shock, musical or otherwise, is that from Chapel Hill?
Basically, Chapel Hill is musically kind of my home, and anywhere else is anywhere else. Anywhere else is me in a vacuum, basically. Australia is not that different, really. It's just that it's not my normal pattern, so it just makes me kind of go off in a cave by myself and write the kind of songs that are coming out of me anyway.

Others can't figure out if Ben is an American living in Australia or an Australian living in America. Eight Days, a Singapore publication falsely refers to him as "the U.S. based Aussie."
Ben does live in Australia, so referring to it as his home country is not technically incorrect, it can be misleading to anyone who doesn't realize he is American:
In support of his album, Folds is planning a year-long promotional tour in North America hitting cities like Philadelphia, New York and Boston before heading to Japan and his home country, Australia.
