By April Charlton
October 11, 2000

Local kids had the chance to audition for the talent show each week in September at the Cypress Landing courtyard in Pismo Beach.
Rebekah Arnett16, from Morro Bay was one of the chosen few who'll take to the stage singing at the festival that celebrates the famous Pismo Beach clams. The tall blonde with the powerful voice has been singing ever since she can remember and said she loves to sing.
"I really like singing because it's an expression of feelings...and people can relate to those feelings," Arnett said. "You can really define what you're feeling through song. I like Celine Dion because feels the music and signs it as a story: I really like that."
Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and the band Hansen have also all influenced the teenage songstrees' singing style - who has no formal training when it comes to her singing voice and usually practices by singing in her bedroom while listening to CDs. However, the lack of formal training hasn't stopped her from performing.
She has belted out ballads at other talent shows; she has sung "God Bless USA" and "God Bless America" at baseball games in the Imperial Valley; and she used to sing in a church choir. At her audition for the "Blues for Kids" talent show she sang two ballads and a pop tune, "Born To Make You Happy," by Britney Spears, which she'll also perform at the Clam Festival.
Arnett said she plans to become a professional singer when she grows up and is currently looking for a band to perform with her.

In a recent contest on the Central Coast, and in front of an audience of 250 spectators, a young Morro Bay singer, approximately 50 contestants. “I’m not happy when I’m not using my singing ability,” she said. Arnett has also taken part in some theatrical productions, namely, Alice in Wonderland in Southern California.
Rebekah not only has a talented voice, but she also writes her own lyrics. Songs from some of her favorite groups, such as Savage Garden and Nsync, have influenced Rebekah’s own musical style and philosophy. Nsync is a group that performs in a style is mostly related to “pop” music. The positive attitude of the group is attractive, she says. Other musical genres which Rebekah enjoys are rock and alternative.
Besides her interest in music, Rebekah also enjoys other activities. “I like to dance, go horseback riding and collect rocks, “ says the young singer as she agrees to set up her sound equipment a the 2 Dogs Coffee Company and Internet Cafe in Morro Bay. A song by Diane Warren entitled, “How Do I Live?” can be gently heard ringing through the cafe and out on to the street where later, town city employees inquire about the clear an stable voice.
“I’ve been singing ever since I remember” says Rebekah, who has performed at various events such as at her aunt’s wedding, at festivals, and even at activities scheduled for national holiday celebrations. Her voice seems as if she has taken extensive courses in singing interpretation, but in actuality, this vocalist has no formal training in the field.
“I want to be a famous singer.“ says Rebekah, who has been a resident on the Central Coast since April of last year.
A special musical interest of Rebekah’s is the composition of songs by Celine Dion. For Rebekah, this artist's songs are like a story. In fact, Rebekah has written something that her mother, Natalie Arnett, hasn’t yet heard. It’s a song called “Psycho Mama,” and from the expressions on Rebekah’s face, one can see that there is a story that relates a fun side of the relationship which exits between mother and daughter.
Speaking of music and the influence that is has on life, Rebekah made it a point to mention that music should be a positive means of communication.

Morro Bay songstress is on her way
16 year old singer looking for dancers to complete her act
By April Charlton
January 17-23, 2001

REBEKAH ARNETT WANTS TO BE FAMOUS when she grows up,and the 16-year-old singing sensation from Morro Bay is heading in the right direction the road to success.
The tall blonde isn't a stranger to the stage; she has been singing ever since she can remember. She performed as part of Valerie Johnson's "Blues for Kids" program in October at the Pismo Beach Clam Festival, and more recently she performed on New Years Eve during San Luis Obispo's First Night celebration. "( performing at) First Night was great," said Arnett. "It was a nice audience, and it was the first time I ever got paid to sing."
However, for Arnett, singing isn't about the money she can make with her voice, its about her love for crooning and performing. The young lady with the powerful vocal chords- who has also never had any formal voice training - wants to share her love of song and performance with other people her age.
Arnett feels that there aren't enough positive things for teenagers to do in the area. She also believes that there aren't enough places for teenagers to hang out on the weekend, and she doesn't think it's fair that teenagers don't have places to go and things to do during their time off from school.
"(Teenagers) should get involved in something that's good," said Arnett, who like to perform tunes written by Britney Spears , Christina Aguilera, Hanson and Celine Dion, to name just few.
So, she wants to get a group of dancers together including her friend Nicole Parry who's a dancer and will help Arnett choreograph the routines they will perform on stage with her when she sings. Arnett, Parry and their soon to be dancers will start performing at various businesses and restaurants throughout the county sometime in March. Her dancers won't get paid for performing; their performances will be on a volunteer basis because Arnett and her dance troupe most likely won't get money for their entertaining.
" I want dancers that love to dance, want to be seriously commited and have fun." said Arnett. "They also need to be prepared to dance to popular music. It's pretty much all going to be about having fun."
She wants to bring dancers, both male and female, into her singing act because she feels they'll round out her performance and make it more visually entertaining. She had four dancers with her on stage at the Clam Festival and really enjoyed having others perform with her.
Arnett will be holding dance auditions Saturday, Feb. 10 and Sunday, Feb. 11 at 3p.m. at Morro Bay Park. For more information about auditioning call Arnett at________.
