"Ipswich and Dracutt records contain various mentions of his name and intimate the parents of his wife. His farm is on the south side of the Merrimac River. On account of Indian hostilities the family was obliged to live on the north side, known as Chelmsford and probably for years slept in the garrison. One morning in 1676 Samuel Varnum, his two older sons, George and Samuel, and his daughter Hannah were crossing the river to milk cows. As they landed they were fired upon by Indians and the two sons were killed. This was probably one of the strongest incitements in the King Phillips War."
