INDEX
wager1064
He came to Boston JUL 1638 with his wife and son John in the ship Martin. Although Nicholas Brown, Chad's great grandson, is given credit for the name behind Rhode Island's Brown University, Chad's is the name that first came to the property and named it. His full name is the Rev. Chaddus Brown. He first located at Salem, Essex County, Massachusetts, but soon removed to Providence, Providence County, Rhode Island, in sympathy with Roger Williams's religious and political sentiments. He was one of the 13 signers of the first written Compact of the Providence Plantation. Chaddus was a prominent citizen of Providence and pastorate of the First Baptist Church of Providence where he was ordained in 1642 as the first settled minister of that church (some believe Roger Williams was the first minister of that church).
