I close my locker, and galnced over at Nick. He saw me look at him, but I didn't really care. I wanted to say something, but I didn't due to fear of screwing up and saying something that I shouldn't have. But even if I had chose to, I would have been interrupted - Erin bounced up beside me.
"Yo!" I said in my best ghetto voice.
"Howdy!" she replied. "Did you happen to do your Health?"
"Erin, how many times do I have to tell you, I don't have Health babe!"
"Duh! I knew that!" she giggled, her face turning red with embarassment.
"I have Health!" Nick announced, out of nowhere.
I could feel my eyes get bigger. "I uh...gatta go to the bathroom!" I said in a desprate attempt to get away. I ran off, leaving Erin behind with Nick.
"So...," she sighed. "Did you actually understand it?"
"Yeah, most of it, you need help?"
She shrugged. "Sure, why not?"
They sat down in front of his locker and he helped her with everything he understood. "What perioid Health are you in?"
"Second."
"You lie!"
"Uh...no?
"That's when I have it!"
"Yeah, I sit behind you. Three seats behind you, I think," he answered.
"Cool!" she smiled. That's when the bell rung.
"See you in Health?" he asked.
"You bet!" she replied and they split up.
"Where did you do!?" Erin asked when I met up with her at lunch.
"I told you...the bathroom!"
"Stephanie! Why did you leave? That was your chance!"
"Yeah right. Besdies, I would have totally screwed it up! GUess I just freaked out."
"Well, he's really nice. I'm sure he'd talk to you if you said something to him."
"Most sensable people would..."
"No, I mean he'd want to talk back!" she laughed.
"I repeat myself, yeah right!"
Erin laughed. "You're so hard on yourself! Besides, in Health he told me his girlfriend Roxanne broke up with him because she thought he was chating on her."
"Well was he?"
"No!"
"Well, she's dumb."
"Just about as hard-headed as you!"
I figured seeing Nick yestreday at his locker was a one in a lifetime sort of thing, but he was there again after the 2:30 bell. I surley wasn't going to talk to him, s I went on with getting my books for home. The end of the day was just fill of surprises, because out of the corner of my eye I could see him walking my way. "Um, hey!" he said, getting my attention. "Stephanie, right?"
I looked around, makign sure he was actually talking to me. "That would be me."
He laughed. "I'm sorry to bother you, but uh, do you have Erin's number? She gave it to me, but I must have lost it in PE class somewhere in between the basketball court and the locker room."
I stared at him blankly for a second, and then replied. "Uh, yeah, hold on." I grabbed a piece of paper out of my bag that looked like it had been through World War 2, a pen, and scribbled her number down on it nervously. After scratching it out twice and re-writing it so he could read it, I handed it to him.
"Thanks," he smiled.
I almost melted. "You're welcome," I said, smiling back.
Normally, I would have been furious that Erin had something to do with the guy I liked, but she swore on the Holy Bible that she was in love with her long time boyfriend, David, so I wasn't the least bit worried about it. Besides, we had made a pact back in our freshman year that we were never gonna go over each other's guys.
After all that I headed to work. I changed into my uniform shirt in the car, and went inside. Six hours later I came back out and went home to get started on my homework. By the time I got all of it done, it was 11:00, so I decided I'd take my shower in the morning and go ahead and go to bed then.
