Hawaii All State Honor Choir 2000 and NIKAN

The "Hawaii All State Honor Choir 2000" is a program that took place on February 10-13. To get in you had to audition and fill out forms and then go to a lot of pre-rehearsals. It took a lot of hard work, but it was still a blast.

My name is Ben Smith and I just want to tell you my experiences in this program. The reason I decided to join this program was for the simple reason that it sounded like fun. I remember my friends telling me how fun it was last year so I decided to try it out and see if they were right. I live on the island of Kauai so the person in charge of that islands honor choir kids was my choir director, Mr. Conrad. I give a lot of thanks to this man, because he has helped me realize what a joy singing can be.

Anyways, I went to 6 of the 7 practice rehearsals and enjoyed them all. There were about 19 people from Kauai High, 6 from Kapaa High, and 1 from Waimea High.

THURSDAY THE 10

I woke up at 5:00 then packed the rest of my stuff and went to the Kauai Airport. We left at 6:45 and arrived around 7:15. After everyone collected their baggage we waited for the bus that would take us to BYU were the program was being hosted. It was a long bus ride, but I had fun showing some of the people from HILO our progress on this map of Oahu I got from the Airplane. When everyone got to the campus we went to the ballroom and we took our seats and we got introduced to all the chaperones and people in charge. Our conductors name is Mr.Leck. This guy is really cool, he was always jumping around and making little funny gestures whenever we got really tired and to keep our spirits up.

After a couple hours of rehearsal we went to eat lunch and socialize. I met some more people during lunch and then watched Randall sing up on the BYU stage with this Hawaiian band!

The rest of the day it's just a blur of practicing our singing.

We got back to our hotel around 9:30. I was roomed with a guy named named Chad and another named David. Most of us went out and partied around the pool for a while. I went and practiced a little fighting with my new friends Vince and Andrew. After that I went to the pool area. I got some swing dancing lessons from Beth, Sharroni, and Elise. Then I tried my hand in the break dancing circle, but I had to bow down to the other guys :-] I saw another person I met named Clair on her balcony, so we tried to act out the balcony scene from Romeo & Juliet in a mix of sign language and speech. It would have been perfect except that I didn't know one gesture of sign language! I looked around and saw a limbo line so I tried that out, even if I messed up right off the bat it was still fun. Around that time I was thinking, "You know, with this many high school kids around, there's BOUND to be some booty dancing" And guess what! There were my 2 classmates from Kauai Tian and Akasha freaking a palm tree with everyone else cheering them on. After that there was some *chough* dancing going on for a little while, but it was curfew so we had to go back to our rooms.

When I got back to room 115, Chad and I watched some Swiss Family Robinson while David listened to some music.

FRIDAY THE 11

In the morning I woke up at 6:30 and got dressed and readied by 6:45. Unfortunately I was the only one in the pool area till 7:15. Then everyone went over to eat at McDonalds. You had a choice between Sausage Muffin thing and Pancakes. Like any well brought up person I chose the muffin :-] While I was waiting for everyone else to finish breakfast I went out to the little playground the McDonalds had and had a full-blown fight with those little collared plastic balls against Casey Brown and a couple of girls. It was really fun when someone said we were acting like kindergarteners and got pelted with a dozen the balls!
Off we went to practice again. When we got their I watched Vince and Andrew go at it Eddy Gordo Style. One thing that drew my attention to Vince is that he looked ALOT like this younger version of martial arts teacher, deja vu!

A lot more rehearsals followed this! It was a lot of fun learning the music through. A lot of the time between songs i spent goofing off with this guy named Kekane that I sat next to in the bass section. I was lucky to get a seat there, because Jon sat below us and I could always find the note by listing to him and the people around me if I got lost.

During the lunch break we had a meal at the BYU cafeteria. The food there is ok but I don't know if I would want to eat their everyday like some of those collage kids do.

More rehearsals. Less goofing off.

Ahh, now this dinner was a treat. it was hosted by the L&L place, and it had all the grinds! We also got to play in the game room for free! I watched my friend Natalie play Table Hockey and thought she wasn't very good when she lost to this one guy, until i played him and didn't even score a point! That taught me a lesson in being Humble :-] i forgot that lesson after I blew these 2 guys away in a Golden Eye Death match through.

Everyone was getting excited because we were going to have a talent show later that night.

The talent show got started after a little more rehearsals, and the MC's were my old friend Silvin, and new friend Janzell. My new friends Beth and Saaroni got me into their EGG skit. I played the director, Beth was the cook, Saaroni was the Person #2, Tom was the Cameraman, and this other guy was the doctor. I did an ok job as the director, but Beth and Saaroni were a laugh riot! A couple others that I remember clearly were Vince and Andrews fighting scene. Jon's love song to Alicia was very romantic, it got all the girls sighing. The Brazil Song was good, and so were Jelani and his band from Mililani. After that fun we were treated to even more by Damien and his buddy with their fire dancing!

Back to the hotel we went but we had to go straight to our rooms so everyone walked back slowly :-]

SATURDAY THE 12

Cut to the morning. Saturday was the day of the performance, and the last day everyone would be together before the Oahu kids left for home :-[

After breakfast Anthony and I had to protect my friend Frankie from the hands of Clair and Emily. It took us awhile to get him back!

During Lunch I became part of the group called the NIKANs. I'm going to have a whole page on that group so you can read all about it later.

Then came the last rehearsals before the first concert. It was little stressful for me because we were all tired and I didn't know if we could handle it.

After we got dressed for the performance we went and watched the BYU people perform for us and then went on stage to do our concert! I wasn't that nervous because I have been doing this thing for awhile, the only part of the concert that wasn't fun was standing for an hour and trying to wipe the sweat off my brow without drawing attention :-] We sang the a Requiem written by the head chaperone John Alexander, and 8 other songs. Even with all of us tired and our voices a little sore, we sounded great. When the concert ended all the Oahu kids had to go home for the night. It was really sad, because that was the last time that everyone would be together till the next concert. A couple of my friends were crying and I almost broke down in tears myself. I even tried to hide a couple of the Oahu people under my watch but they couldn't fit. The rest of the neighbor island kids got different room assignments, and I was bunked with Anson, Shaun, and Rhey. The walk back was depressing for me but I joked around with my buddy Frankie so it wasn't to bad.

We had two choices when we got back, so I decided to go watch the movie "Down to you" instead of hanging at the hotel. The movie was ok, but I didn't know anyone in the movie group so I wish I'd stayed at the hotel.

I got back to the hotel around 11:30 and everyone was in their rooms already, so I decided to go visit some of the other rooms. I don't know where the 'security' was, since I was hanging into all of the guy's rooms till 1:00. I knocked on Doug's room because I heard the TV blasting but nobody answered. I knocked some more then went in. There was Doug, Kawika, and Randell asleep with some Japanese carton playing. I woke Doug up and he had me lock down the room for him. Feeling bored I went to my good buddy Erik's room to hang. He was roomed with Damien and Sandy, and Jeremy was there too. All those guys together is a scary thought! I thought that they would sneak out and go fire dance on the beach or something. After playing around for a while I went back to my room and konked out while watching Comedy Central.

SUNDAY THE 13

Last day of the Honor Choir! Thanks to some needed sleep I wasn't a zombie that morning. It turns out that the continental breakfast that the hotel was offering was muffins and juice. Yummy! After seeing those good-looking muffins I had the sudden urge to visit McDonalds and get a breakfast burrito. The only scary part off that morning was that Ron didn't have my trench coat that i let him borrow the night before. I'm kind of attached to that coat even if it does give the wrong impression of me. It was a Christmas gift from my mom :-] Ron and I went over to the BYU campus and did a stealth raid into the ballroom were devotions were being taken. Unfortunately it wasn't there so we hoped that Mrs. Kochi picked it up the previous night! I hanged out with all the other honor choir people and packed up to leave. The bus ride to the church was fun. I watched has Randell proposed to Damien and couldn't stop laughing. I hadn't realized how beautiful Oahu was until I looked out the bus windows and saw the mountains above and city below!.

When we got to the Kawaiahao Church all the people were amazed with the bus drivers skill in parallel parking! We regrouped in the bottom of the church and hanged out until lunch. Lunch was served by Mr. Conrad and it was ono! I also got reunited with m trench coat, so Ron was off the hook :-]

The time after rehearsal was REALLY sad because everyone would be leaving, so it was filled with a lot of hugs and everyone exchanging their addresses. (If I don't have your address and number write me a email at Krozkiller@hotmail.com , I don't want to lose touch!) Again I almost broke down but due to propaganda stuffed into me since kindergarten the tears wouldn't come.

Now came the time to go to our seats and await our turn to sing. They started off the show with the "Barbershop Chorus." Good group! Then the "Women's Festival Choir" sang. Another great group, there was even a couple of honor choir people in that group! The children's choir was wonderful to hear. I know I clapped for those little singers :-] Now all my friends, new and old, and I lined up and took our places on the holy ground of the church and began to sing for the last time together. It was depressing at first but after a few pages of the Requiem I really got into it. I could feel all the energy around me from everyone else and it just pushed me to sing louder and with more feeling. When we got to the Battle of Jericho everyone put everything we had in it. On the last phase I sang the loudest note that ever came out of me! It was really intense! We finished the concert by singing "Hope for Resolution" with the children's choir. Some of the best music I've herd if you ask me :-)

The good byes after that were a little rushed because we had to get on the bus to the airport, but did I let that stop me from saying my farewells to all the great people their? Nope! I got a couple more addresses and gave a lot of hugs to anyone who was there!

After rushing to the bus we hastily drove to the airport. I'm part of the Kauai Performing Arts Center(KPAC) and we had a recital at 7:00 that night, so some of the other members and myself rushed to the gates and found got on the next standby flight there was. Real quick like 8-)

After securing the seats on the plane we were off to return home. I spent that time in the air talking with Tian and Anson about some of the fun people I met and how cool it would be to live in Oahu and visit them all the time.

When we landed we rushed to the taxi phone and ordered a taxi to take us to the recital. Luckily Anson and Floras parents were their already and as swift has can be we arrived around 7:50 just in time to do the song and dance number we were in!

It's been really fun writing this and it brought back all the good memories that i had. I'm going to be working on this more as time goes by, but its getting late so I have to call it a night. I give my love to all those of you who are reading this and I hope you are remembering and smiling too!

I love you all!
