Less than a month later, I stepped off the plane in New York and looked around for Denise. I finally spotted her and we made our way to the Ritz Carlton, where the boys were staying for the VMA’s. When we arrived at the hotel, I rode the elevator up to Nick’s room and knocked on the door. A second later the door flew open and Nick grabbed me and kissed me hard:
“I missed you soooooo much.” I barely had time to put my stuff down before he picked me up and took me over to the bed. I laughed:
“Frustrated much, Nick?” He pulled away:
“Ha ha! It’s just that I really missed you.” We spent the next couple of hours in bed and then we had to get ready for this fancy dinner thing that the guys had. After we were all showered and ready we went downstairs to meet up with everyone else. As soon as we stepped off the elevator, I spotted Leighanne and ran over to her:
“Leigh!!!” She turned around and hugged me:
“Oh my god! Kate! You don’t know how excited I am that you’re coming on tour with us.” Leighanne had some time off since she just finished filming a movie and so she was going to spend it with Brian and the rest of us.

After the VMA’s, which the guys won the Viewer’s Choice award, we flew back down to Orlando so the guys could brush up for the tour. A week later (one day before the tour was set to begin) I realized that my period was a week late (KN: I know that it’s unlikely to realize it this early, but I left out a part of the story that I meant to put in and I’m too damn lazy to add it in now.)
I couldn’t believe that this was happening to me again. I didn’t want to tell Nick right away so I went to Leighanne instead. She was completely understanding and went with me to get tested. When we got the results back, I was stunned. I couldn’t believe this was happening again. I started to cry as Leighanne patted my shoulder, reassuringly:
“Kate, did you use protection?” I sobbed:
“I thought we were careful though, you know?” She nodded:
“What are you going to do about it?” I thought about it:
“Oh my god. I can’t do this again.” Leighanne was puzzled:
“Again?” I explained her the whole story about last winter. She hugged me:
“Oh, Kate, I’m so sorry.” I wiped my tears away:
“I have to do this. I absolutely cannot have a baby. It would ruin everything. My life. Nick’s career…” I trailed off as tears cascaded down my cheeks. I wiped them away:
“I’m doing it. But Leigh, you have to promise me. Please don’t tell Nick.” Her head shot up in surprise:
“You’re not going to tell Nick. Kate, I don’t know about this.” I pleaded with her:
“Please, Leigh. You can’t tell him. I don’t want to bother him with this. He doesn’t need it right now. He’s riding on such a high and this would just bring him down.” She looked at me sympathetically:
“Kate, I understand where you’re coming from but Nick has a right to know. It’s his baby too.” I got up and started walking out the door:
“Leigh, as far as Nick’s concerned, there is no baby. Never was.”
