Jesse Watkins was born in North Carolina and arrived in Mississippi around 1846. He built a home in Neshoba Co. using slave labor without the use of an architect. It was a Southern Planter style home with four rooms upstairs and seven rooms downstairs. This magnificent dwelling had three chimneys, one stick and two end, all three had huge fireplaces. The house had a log foundation which was mortized and pegged together and the heart pine lumber was hand plained. The doors and mantels were all hand made. The deed to the home and property was made out on sheepskin and was signed by President Martin VanBuren in 1841.

Jesse was a farmer and at one time, he owned twenty-five slaves and 2000 acres of prime farm land. Because he believed slavery was wrong, soon after the war began, he freed his slaves. He was against secession but accepted it. Jesse was an old-line whig and he lived a Christian life until his death in 1884.

Jesse was a supervisor of a large plantation in North Carolina and when he came to Mississippi he brought with him his diary listing the manes: Mrs. M. A. George and T. H. George. There was information on plantation slaves, their deaths, their cost, amount of food raised and much much more. The last known owner of this diary was Ed Watkins, his grandson, and the diary was reported to have been in perfect condition.

James Watkins, son of Jesse, came to Mississippi with his father at about the age of thirteen. He was a farmer also. James was educated at Carolina Academy wich was located 14 miles southwest of Philadelphia, Mississippi on Old Beach Springs and Edinburg Roads near Leake County. It was a one-room building and the first teacher was Mr. Kelly. Later the school moved to Dowdville.

James married Martha Brantley in 1857. She came to Mississippi in 1855 from Georga and she was the daughter of Jones Brantley. James served in Company K, Fifth Mississippi Regiment from 1861 to the close of the war. He fought at Pensacola, Florida, Farmington, Mississippi and Chickamauga. When the war ended, James returned to farming.

In 1867, James opened a general store in Meridian, Mississippi, which was destroyed by fire in 1868, and then James went back to the farm. He was a devout Christian, believed in higher education for all, and was well respected by his peers, and was a Mason. He owned almost 15000 acres and was one of the largest land owners in Neshoba County.

Watkinsville established a postoffice July 16, 1873. The one and only postmaster was James W. (Short Jim) Watkins, who served until 1903 when the office was discontinued and the mail was sent to Dixon, Mississippi. I'm not sure if these James are the same person!!!!
