Okay, here I have the truth, and nothing but the truth! So beleive everything here, because I don't talk crap like some other sites. I have Pocket Monsters Silver version in Japanese, so I don't understand a lot of what the heck the people are saying. But, I understand the game play, and I know what I'm doing.
First, I'll start off explaining the three starting Pocket Monsters (PokeMon, whatever). There are three brand new starting Pokemon. Their names are: Chikorita, Cyndaquil, and Totodile.
All three starting Pokemon are males. Chikorita is a grass-type, Waninoko is a water-type, and Hinoarashi is a fire-type. I started out with Waninoko, because he's the cutest of the three. He is also pretty strong and handy. None of the Pokemon would be wrong to choose, because the first gym focuses on flying-type pokemon. When playing I suggest building up your starting pokemon to at least level 10. It's not that hard.
In Gold/Silver you rival is a female. And also, the big rumor going around about being able to play as a boy or girl is FAKE!!! You are forced to play a boy again. There is real time in Gold and Silver. You set the time when you first start out. A little bit later, your mom asks you what day it is.
The game play is much the same as the original Red/Blue versions, except your items are much more organized. your items are split into four sections. Section 1 is for potions, antidotes, heals, stuff like that. The second section if for the different types of Pokeballs. The third section is for HMs and TMs, and finally, the fourth section if for items like the bike, and fishing rods. I've heard you can ride a skateboeard in this game, as well, but i don't know if that's true.
Catching Pokemon is much the same as before. But the animations for catching are different. Instead of the Pokeball exploding, it pops open into two halves, then closes on the pokemon. Master balls are very cool, too. They're green, and when they pop in half, a swirl of stars surrounds the pokemon and sucks it in.
The attack animations are much better-looking than before. There's also a whole new array of attacks, such as what I call "Cupid's Kiss", it confuses your enemy into hurting him or herself. Quick attack is pretty cool-looking, as well as water gun and psychic.
All the original 150 monsters look different, as well. Not only the fronts of your fav. 150 get new looks, but the backs, as well. When you send out a Pidgey or Koffing, they look different from behind.
There are supposedly 16 Gym Leaders in Gold/Silver. There are 8 breand new ones, and the original 8 (but I think there's someone else in Fuchsia Gym). I don't know about the original 8, but there are definitely 8 new gym leaders. The Gyms also focus on different types this time. There are new badges, too.
For battles, there's new music, and the trainers all look different, too.
Yes, new Pokemon. In the Gold/Silver versions, there are a total of 251 Pocket Monsters. There have been pre-evolutions discovered, and more evolutions. There are also totally new pokemon. I think there are two new types, too. Steel and Evil.
Pre-Evolutions recently discovered:
Pichu-Pikachu, Pii-Clefairy, Elekidd-Electabuzz.
Even More evolutions
Onix-some weird, blackish-gray snake thing that I forgot the name of.
Eevee-Efi,Burakki
Slowbro-Slowking(when directly translated)
Chansey-Hapinasu
Magmar-Bubii(or could this be a pre-evolution?)
There are 200 new monsters, including evolutions and pre-evolutions. The list that follows names them all. Names with starts by them mean they are confirmed American names.

Most of us have heard about it and have marvled over it. Yes, Pocket Monster Breeding. You can go to the city where you get your 3rd badge, go south, and you'll come upon a building. Enter there with a male and female pokemon of THE SAME SPECIES. NO CROSSBREEDING!!! (which is a shame). Give the female pokemon to the woman, and give the male pokemon to the man. Then walk around for a little bit. Come back and you'll notice that the man is gone. Where is he? go out the backdoor to find out.
When you enter the backyard, the man will be standing by the door. Talk to him, and he'll give you a pokemon egg that your pokemon produced!!! After taking about 1000 steps, the egg should hatch, and you should have yourself a little baby Pokemon. I wouldn't say cute because not all of them are especially cute.
You also might want to take your pokemon back. Otherwise they'll keep having kids. I left a male and female Bangirasu at the breeding center, and I already have 5 eggs from them!

Along with the release of the Gold/Silver versions, there was also a release of a new set of Pokemon cards! They are called Pokemon "neo" cards. Neo means New, and the name fits the cards well, since all the cards feature a new Pokemon from gold/silver versions. I myself have a few Neo cards that I received from Santa Claus (my personal friend).
The cards I have are the three starting Pokemon and their evolved forms. The final form of each Pokemon is a holofoil card, which is very valuable, since the cards are special promotional cards. The cards came in a very nice, specialized folder, with a fold-out, of some of the new Pokemon. Once I get a scanner I'll scan part of the fold-out and post it up here. But I have pics of the cards I have below.
I Recently got myself a pair of sweet Gold/Silver promo cards that were available only in Japan with Pocket Monsters Card Game Trainers Magazine. I got the last set avalable. Anyways, There are two cards. Yamikarasu the crow, and an evil-type energy. Yamikarasu is an evil-type Pocket Monster. It is number 198. At the bottom of the cards, there are japanese words explaining that the card was a promo card available only in Volume 4 of Pocket Monsters Card Game Trainers Magazine. Here are what the cards look like.
There is another promo card that I want really bad but don't have. it's the promo "Upa" card. Available only from CoroCoro comics. I don't know if I'll get my hands on this one, but I'm happy enough with the promos I already have.
This is the Upa card that I'm searching for.

That's all I have so far for gold/silver info. I don't want to reveal everything. I just posted all this stuff up to make you want the game really bad. No, really. Actually, I put this up to inform you of the basics of Gold/Silver. All the things here are TRUE. Beleive nothing else you see on other web pages. I swear by my heart this info's all true.
I've actually started working on a walkthrough. I'll have the link for the first part up tonight or tomorrow.
