Gold/Silver Walkthrough

Back To CoolBird's PokePlace

New Bark Town

This is where you first start out. Your mom asks you what day it is. Then you walk outside. You go into the lab. There you will meet Proffesor Elm. He will ask you to choose your starting PokeMon.

Chikorita-Chikorita is a grass-type Pokemon. I reccomend Chikorita for the experienced player. I say that because the first Gym focuses on Flying-Type Monsters, and you should all know that Flying-types are good against Grass-types.

Cyndaquil-Cyndaquil is a Fire Pokemon. I suggest you choose this little guy if you're just starting out and you're a beginner. The second Gym focuses on Bugs, and Fire is great against Bug. Cyndaquil is pretty powerful, and is an all-around good choice.

Totodile-Totodile is a Water-type, and my personal favorite. I started out with her (mine was a female), and I've been doing fine. Totidile is pretty powerful, and you will need a water Pokemon so you can reach Cianwood City. I suggest Totodile for advanced players.

After choosing your first PokeMon, head West, to go on towards Cherrygrove City.

Cherrygrove- And Beyond

Heal your Pokemon at the Pokemon Center, then start heading North through a forest-like area. Go into the second house you see, and you will see a man in a hat (Mr. Pokemon) and Proffesor Oak. Talk to professor Oak and he will give you your PokeDex.

After Prof. Oak leaves, talk to the man in the hat. you will stay the night.

Then you will get a call informing you that one of Proffesor Elm's Pokemon has been stolen! And just your luck, it's one that has an advantage over yours. Well, I guess you've just found your rival. Your rival's Pokemon will be at level 5. If your starting Pokemon if around level 8, you should have no problem.

After defeating your rival, head back to Prof. Elm's to name your rival and recieve your PokeBalls.

Now that you have your Pokeballs, why not catch some PokeMon? I reccomend catching Sentret, a Pidgey, a Caterpie/Weedle, and a Rattata.

Violet City

After catching a few PokeMon and raising them to at least level 9, you should go onto the next town, Violet.

Here in violet city, you can recieve your first badge. Heal Your Pokemon at the PokeMon Center, then enter the Gym.

In the Gym, there will be two trainers. Beat both of them, then go and challenge the Gym Leader.

GYM LEADER -- Falkner

Hayato will use two Pokemon. Pidgey, and Pidgeotto.

Pidgey-- Level 7

Pidgeotto -- Level 9

Both Pokemon are easy to beat. Once you've received your zephyr badge, heal your Pokemon, then go north into Bellsprout Tower.

Sprout Tower

In sprout Tower, you walk around fighting Monks who train bellsprout and the occasional Hoothoot. After beating them all and reaching the top, you will encounter the head Monk, The Elder.

The Head Monk will use Two Bellsprouts at level 7, and a Hoothoot at level 10. Defeat him, and he will give you HM05, flash.

Togepi and Uknown

After defeating sprout Tower, go back to the PokeCenter. Heal your Pokemon, then talk to the scientist. He will give you an egg! After taking about 1000 steps, the egg will hatch into a Togepi!

After getting Togepi (you have to get it, otheriwse you can't go into the next town), go west along the path, then go south into the route change house. When you emerge, you will be in at the ruins of Alph. Enter the first cave and solve the puzzle, which turns out to be a kabuto.

After completing the puzzle, the floor will disappear and you will be in a hallway-like place with lots of statues. Here you can catch Uknown.

Uknown-is a psychic-type Pokemon. It has no gender, and appears in many different shapes. So don't get confused if you see one that looks like an eye, then you see one that looks like a bird. It's still the same Pokemon.

You should later return here with Surf, Strength, and the TM Rock-Breaker, to go into different caves and catch different Uknown shapes. Evenutally after you enter all the caves, a scientist will give an Uknown upgrade to your PokeDex that will let you see how many different Uknown you have.

Route 32 and Azalea

Once you travel south enough, you will come upon a lone PokeCenter. Heal your Pokemon, then talk to the Fishing Guru to get a Fishing Rod. Continue down the path to enter a short cave with many geodudes and zubat in it.

When you emerge, you will find a Team Rocket Member Blocking an entrance to a cave. Another TR member is blocking the Gym entrance. You must defeat Team Rocket and free all the Slowpokes they have captured. To get rid of the TR member by the cave, go into the house right above the gym. Talk to man in there, and he will get rid of the TR member blocking the cave.

Then you must enter the cave and defeat all the TR members to free the Slowpokes. After that you can fight the local Gym Leader, Bugsy.

Bugsy-She will use a Metapod, a Kakuna, and a Scyther. Scyther is very hard because he is at level 16, and his Slash attack will KO a Pokemon very quickly. You must level up your pokemon to at least level 14 or 15 to have a fighting chance. Now is the time to use Cyndaquil(or Quilava, if your Cyndaquil evolved). Her Metapod and Kakuna are pretty easy. Metapod is at level 14, and so is Kakuna. If you win, you will get the Plain badge and TM 49.

Then, once you try to leave town, you will encounter your rival again. he will use the evolved form of his starting Pokemon, a gastly and a zubat. If your Pokemon are around level 16, he should pose no problem.

Ilex Forest and Goldenrod

After emerging from the Switch House, you will be in a dark forest, where Zubat, Rattata, and Spearow constantly attack you. As you walk you will see a boy. Talk to him, then continue on. You will see a lone Farfetch'd. Chase the Farfetch'd over to the boy. Once you get to the boy, his father will be there. Talk to him and he will give you HM01, Cut. Teach cut to one of your PokeMon, then walk up to the strange bush and press A. It will instantly be cut down! Neat, huh?

Breeding

To breed, get a female and male Pokemon that have the same icon, or sprite (in the Pokedex). You give the male pokemon to the man, and the female pokemon to the woman. Then go outside and walk around for a bit. Come back when the man is standing outside and talk to him. Answer yes, and he will give you an egg!

There is no excessive crossbreeding. But you can mate the same type of pokemon. For example, take a Hoothoot and a Pidgey. Give the female to the woman, etc., etc., etc. The result will be that the species of the pokemon will be that of the female, but it will have the male's attacks! Weird, huh? Just think of the combinations...

Pre-Volutions

Pikachu-Pichu

Clefairy-Pi

Jigglypuff-Igglybuff

Magmar-Magby

Electabuzz-Elekid

Jynx-Smoochum

Goldenrod City

Goldenrod city is huge. It's like the Celadon of the Gold/Silver world. The PokeMart is huge, like Celadon's and it even has a game corner, too! There's lots to do here, but let's get right down to business -- Your Third Badge.

Gym Leader 3

Whitney-She uses normal-type Pokemon. Her two pokemon are Clefairy, level 18, and Miltank, level 20. Clefairy is a snap to beat if you have something like a gastly. I used my Furret to beat her, and it wasn't hard at all. Miltank is hard, though. I suggest saving your game before fighting Whitney, since Miltank is powerful. She has an attack that can make your pokemon woozy, and its stomp takes a lot of HP. I suggest using a Pidgeotto or a Quilava for Miltank. Definitely use a Gastly if you have one. Uknown shouldn't be too shabby, either.

After beating Whitney, she won't give you the badge right away. Talk to the girl below her, then talk to Whitney again to get the badge.

After Getting your Third Badge, you may want to heal your Pokemon. Then go to the big black tower. Talk to the girl at the far right corner of the counter. She will ask you five questions. Answer yes, yes, no, yes, no. After doing her quiz, she will give you a radio for your PokeGear.

There is also a bike shop in Goldenrod. Just talk to the store clerk to receive a free bike!

Another place you'll want to visit is Bill's house. Talk to him, and he will give you an eevee! There are two new evolutions for eevee: Umbreon and Espeon. Umbreon is the Dark-type evolution for eevee. To get Umbreon, level up eevee during the night. To get Espeon, the Psychic Eevee-lution, level up Eevee during the day.

Soodowoodo -- The Wriggling Tree

When you go North and out of Goldenrod, you will come upon a tree. If you try to cut it down, it will just wriggle a little bit. How do you move it? I will explain how.

To move Soodowoodo, go to the Northernmost row of houses. Then go as far right as you can go. There will be a house bordered by grass. Go inside it and you will see lots of flowerpots and two girls. Talk to the girl farthest from the door, and she will give you Squirtle Water! Now go back to the tree and go to your items. Put the Squirtle Water on Ussaki to fight it.

You may want to catch Soodowoodo. It is a very rare Pokemon. Soodowoodo is a rock-type Pokemon, and is at level 30. Beware of its Rock Throw.

There is also a park west of Soodowoodo the tree. You may want to go in to it before leaving for the next city. Fight and defeat all the trainers, then talk with everyone in the park, and the little boy right by the cut-able tree. he will give you something.

Also, after catching Soodowoodo (I suggest you do, since there's only one in the game), Go East and talk to the Fat Guy to get TM08. You will have to teach this to one of your Pokemon. It is a technique that will break the cracked rocks you see here and there.

The National Park

If you talk to the guy inside the next watch station that looks like a Safari Zone warden, you'll get to do something like the Safari Zone but you can only encounter Bug Pokémon. Some other differences: 1. You get to catch 1 Pokemon. 2. Press start and the round is over. 3. It's free. 4. You get 20 silver Pokeballs. 5. There are no Rocks, or Bait, but you can battle with the Pokemon in your first slot. This Bug Catcher's Tournament is only held on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Ecruteak City

when you get to the next town, heal your pokemon, then be sure they're around level 23. After that, go and challenge the local gym leader.

Now, The Gym floor is very bizarre. It's all black, and you'll be constantly falling through and starting over. It's all trial and error, but I have figured out how to get through it.

First, go right next to the statue on the left. then go up, right, right, up, up, up, up, Left, left, left, up, up, Right, right, right, up, up, up. After defeating the old guys and crazy grandmas, you will face Matsuba, the gym leader.

It would've been handy to have had a Kadabra by now.

GYM LEADER 4M

Morty-He has 4 Pokemon. 4 ghost Pokemon. If you don't have a Psychic Pokemon, then try using your starting Pokemon's evolved form. Morty's line includes: Gastly-21, Haunter-21, Gengar-25, Haunter-23. Gengar is probably one of the hardest opponents you'll face. It, along with Haunter has an attack that will not let your pokemon retreat, and an attack that will constantly hurt your pokemon badly after every move it makes. If you have Pidgeotto, use it. Or if you have a Kadabra, it would be a wise choice. Even by any chance you have an Espeon or Umbreon, use it. These guys are tough nails.

Eventually, after you win, you will receive TM30, and the Phantom Badge. With the Fog Badge, Pokemon up to level 50 will obey you.

After receiving your Badge, there are two more things to do here. First, go into the Eevee Dojo. It's the building right above the PokeCenter. There you must fight a man's five daughters. they each have an eevee evolution, including Espeon and Umbreon.

After Beating all five daughters, talk to the man in the hat. He will give you HM03, Surf. If you have an Corconaw(Totodile's evolved form) Teach Surf to Her. It's a very powerful attack, and will even hurt the most elite of water Pokemon.

After getting Surf, go into the temple at the North of town. There you must break some rocks, then fall down the second hole.

Then, you must go up onto the raised rock platform. There you will see three Pokemon. They will awaken, then scatter. Those were the Three Ledgendary Dogs. Raikou, Entei, and Suicune. Where can you catch them? I will explain that later on.

Olivine City

After going west, through the switch house, and going along the path, you will reach Olivine City. Well, just like always, you'll be wanting your badge. Right? Well, not this time! The gym is empty! Where's the gym leader? You'll find out very soon.

Your next priority is to get HM04, Strength. To get it, walk into the building right next to the pokecenter. Talk to the guys in the cafe to get Strength.

There's also a big tall building. you can go inside and to the top of it to fight all the trainers and not have to fight them later, but you don't necessarily have to. I didn't.

This hole will get you on the way to the top.

Cianwood City

Where is Cianwood city? I'll tell you. Go to the girl on the southernmost tip of Olivine city. You can talk to her if you want. Then, press A when close to the water and answer Yes. You will start Surfing!

Surf Southwest and fight the trainers. You may come across some whirlpools and see a cave. Don't bother about that. It's for later. Anyways, keep Surfing southwest until you reach land. You are now in Cianwood city. Heal your Pokemon. I suggest buying up on potions and super potions now. Because this is where you'll get your next badge.

GYM LEADER 5

Chuck-He will use fighting-types. Primeape and Poliwrath to be exact. Again, Kadabra would come in handy. Primeape is at level 27, and is pretty easy to beat. If you don't have Kadabra, try using Pidgeotto, or your starting Pokemon. Poliwrath is at level 30, and is a bit harder. If you have a Pichu, Pikachu, or a Raichu, try using them. Kadabra would be a better bet, and if your Chikorita has evolved, use Bayleef.

After defeating Chuck, you will earn the Storm badge and TM01. Now Pokemon up to level 70 will obey you.

You may heal your Pokemon if you want, but first, talk to the woman right outside the gym to receive HM02, Fly. Teach it to Pidgeotto or Fearow.

After getting FLY, go into the southernmost house and talk to the guy in sunglasses. He will give you some medicine. You will then take that medicine to Jasmine back in Olivine city.

There is also a man in cianwood that will give you Shuckle if you bring only 5 Pokemon with you. You can also catch a Shuckle by breaking the rocks on Cianwood.

Olivine City -- Again

After getting the medicine, either FLY or SURF back to Olivine. Now you must go into the tall skyscraper and go to the top. When you reach the girl dressed in blue, go left and fall down the hole. then continure going up and you will eventually reach Jasmine. Give her the medicine you received in Cianwood. She will heal her Pokemon, then go back to her Gym.

GYM LEADER 6

Jasmine-Has three Pokemon. Two Magnemites, and Steelix. Here, you will be introduced to a new type of PokeMon -- Steel. The two Magnemites are at level 30, and should pose no problem if you grabbed a Geodude earlier in the game. Steelix is a bit tougher. It's at level 35. Again, Kadabra would be handy. If you don't have Kadabra, Quilava or Typhlosion should fare vey good, since steel is weak to fire.

After Defeating Jasmine, you will recieve the mineral badge and TM23.

Mahogany town and TR HQ

After beating Jasmine, go back to enjyu city and head east until you reach Mahogany Twon. Oh no! It's being overrun by Team Rocket! well. The first thing you wanna do is go north until you reach a lake. There'll be trainers along the way. Okay. Now, you SURF out into the lake, and you'll come upon a Golden Gyarados! Now, talk to it and fight it. Try and catch it, because this PokéMon has higher stats than normal, and it's rare.

Okay, Now you'll have to go back down. While you're walking, you'll see Lance! He'll be reading a sign. Anyway, come and walk up to him, then answer yes. After that, he'll fly off. Since it's in japanesem, i'll tell you what Lance is saying. He says that Team Rocket has a hidden underground base. Anyways, you'll need to infiltrate it. How? go south some more until you reach the town again. Then you'll have to go inside a store. There'll be a guy inside selling things. Lance will show you the seceret entrance. Go inside...

Make sure a lot of your PokéMon are strong, since you'll encouter lots and lots of TR members while in the hideout.

Seems pretty quiet around here, eh? Not for long! Take a few steps and a TR member will attack you. Don't worry, tho. Many of the TRs will only have Rattatas, Drowzees, and Zubats. Make your way fighting the trainers and talking to everyone to get to the next level. Also look on the computer to get the keys you need for the next level.

Nothing much here for the moment. Lance will talk to you when you get here. Look on the computer when you reach it.

When you get the key on the bookshelf to open up the door where the main Rocket boss is, defeat him then talk to the bird for key number 2. Then head back to the 2nd level, and open up the door. Fight some more, then fight the Electrodes.

Lance will thank you and give you HM06, whirlpool. All this does is gets rid of whirlpools, which don't appear too frequently in the game. This does come in handy when you want to get Lugia...

Gym Leader- Pryce

To get to the Gym, just go south a little bit while in Mahogany, and you'll come across the gym. The gym leader here is an old guy named pryce, who uses ice Pokémon. Getting to him isn't easy, though. You'll have to calculate your steps carefully, since you slip around on the ice. I have a map down below to help you, but i suggest fighting everyone in the gym, anyway. You're getting closer to the Orange Islands League, which has some pretty strong Pokémon.

Anyway, Pryce uses Seel, at level 27, Dewgong, at level 29, and Piloswine, at level 31. If you started out with Cyndaquil as your starting buddy, then this guy should pose no problem. Have an electric Pokémon to back you up, too, just in case.

After beating pryce, it's time to head back to Goldenrod for some more Team Rocket excitement.

The Team Rocket Radio Tower

Now you're back at Goldenrod, it's time to kick TR's butt for the 20th time. First start out by going to the big black tower. Now new areas will be open! Unfortunately, these new areas are packed with buttloads of Team Rockets. Fight all these guys (and gals) for good experience. Then go and fight the TR leader at the top of the tower. He'll give you a key to unlock that blue door that's underground in the train station. Go in there and fight your rival.

Your rival will have these Pokémon:
Magnemite -28
Haunter -30
Golbat -30
Sneasel-32
Starter(3rd form)-32

Sneasel is the cat thing that's an dark-type Pokémon. Becareful. Psychic attacks are weak against dark Pokémon!

TR Puzzle

Next you'll have to go into the room and press all these switches to open doors. It took me a while before I finally got it. Use trial and error, and you'll get it soon enough. After that, fight the TR woman. After beating her, go to underground the drpartment store and talk to all the guys down there. One of them will give you a key. Use that key to unlock a locked door that you saw earlier. Go in there and fight some more rocket people.

After beating all the rockets, it's time to pack up and go back to Mahogany! Your mission this time is to go into the Ice cave!

Eevee

Before leaving, don't forget to go and get your free Eevee from Bill! from the department store, head west, past the old guy, and into one of the houses (confused? refer to the pic below). Talk to Bill and answer "yes" to his question. If you have one open slot (which you have to have open for eevee), you'll get your own complimentary Eevee! To make it evolve into Burrakii, the evil eevee evolution, take care of it, make it happy, and take it to the salon during the night. To make it evolve into Efi, do the same thing, except during the day.

The Perilous Ice Cave!!!

I know bunches of people have been having tons of trouble with this place, so I finally Put up maps for you. Make sure you've got a Pokémon that knows strength, and possibly some repels if you get annoyed by random battles. Don't forget to Pick up HM07, Waterfall, while you're in here. Pictured below is probably the most challenging level, so you can refer to the pic while playing. The smaller ones can be solved with simple trail and error. Eventually I'll get those pics up, too.

Afterwards you should come to a room with some stones. Use Strength on the stones and then go to the floor below and slide around on the ice until you get to the island in the middle. After that it's pretty straightforward.

NOTE:-These pics were taken from The PokeMasters.com Thanks, guys! ( I personally asked them to use these pics, so don't steal them.)
