Firstblade Damug Warfang and his murderous Rapscallions
have come to the shores of Mossflower. Long time enemies
of Lady Cregga Rose-Eyes of Salamandastron, this vermin
horde has plans for Redwall. At the abbey, however, the
South wall is sinking into the ground. The Moles find out
the shocking news: Apparently Redwall Abbey was built
partially of the ruins of Kotir(see "Mossflower"). So
Shad the gatekeeping Otter, Abbess Tansy, Friar Bellows,
and Craklyn the recorder make their way down into the depths.
A dark tale of lost treasure is unfolded, and a cave in mars
their adventure. However, after battling a horde of Toads,
found deep beneath Kotir, the four explorers find their
way home. Meanwhile, it has been arranged for a Grand battle
to be waged on a distant ridge, far from Redwall. The
Abbey's champion, Arven, and an army of about 300 set off
against the highly trained 1,000 strong horde of Damug.
A bloody war ensues, and the Redwallers are only saved by the
courage of Cregga and her long patrol Hares, who had been
tracking the vermin since they left the shoreline. In the
heat of the battle, Cregga is blinded, but manages to slay
Damug. All the while, an orphaned Badgerbabe has been staying
at the Abbey, brought there by Tammello de Formello Tussock,
son of Cornspurrey de Formello Tussock, and Mem Devina, after
he and his squirrel friend fought for the infants life.
However, the squirrel, Russa Nodrey, died in the action.
So it was that the orphan was named Russano the Wise, after the
couragous squirrel. In the end, the ridge were the battle
was renamed the Ridge of the Thousand, due to the number of vermin
slain there, the treasure of Kotir was unearthed, Tammo married
his friend, the Healer-Hare Pasque Valerian, and Russano the Wise
went off to rule Salamandastron.
