About this site

This site is not affiliated in any way with John Hawkes. If there are any factual errors of any kind, please email me and let me know. If some information on this site should be removed, email me and let me know. The goal of this site is to promote John Hawkes work, whether it is as an actor, musician, playwright, or cook. If he takes up tapdancing, Well, it might show up here. Might. Then again, maybe not.

This site began on August 19, 2000, because I noticed there was very little on the Internet about John Hawkes, and that there were people looking for information about him, looking for information about the movies he has appeared in. I wanted a one-stop shopping, if you will for all of the information and images. At the time, it seemed only the X-Files sites had any images. This is also a place where I play in the coding of HTML, and get to be all geeky. Speaking of which:

And now for something completely different. Here are the nuts and bolts of this enterprise.

I designed this site to be fast to load where possible, particularly on pages with a lot of information. Nothing is more frustrating than to go to a site looking for info, and it takes forever to load. If you have a slow modem, and pages other than the Darkrooms load very slowly, email me and let me know. It isn't always because of page design, but rather because the Angelfire servers are slow that day.

Some of the images on this site have been culled from other sites, Fan and official sites. Others are screen shots which were then brought into The GIMP or Photoshop for adjustment. The images were then GIMPed, that is, I used the program the GIMP, GNU Image Manipulation Program, to put the film strip border on them. There are versions available for Linux, Mac and Windows. Check out the Gimp home page for more details and download links.

If you find other images (that there are no restrictions on) you think might be good to include here, email them to me. All film and TV images use the slide and film strip format. Anything else, Theater and Music and head shots for example, use a plain format. Credits will be given for personal images. All images should have a DPI of 72. If in doubt, send it anyway. :-)

The GIMP was utilized on the Linux platform, Linux Mandrake, to be precise. I wrote the HTML. The first HTML pages were done by hand by me, on Linux, using the Quanta + Web site creation tool. Additional editing was done using EditPad and 1st Page in Windows. Both are free. Additional editing and adjustments were made later using Dreamweaver. Cascading Style Sheets were also written by me, which is why it looks screwy sometimes. The splash page images were made in Adobe Photoshop by me.

In March of 2007, the site underwent a massive redesign utilizing CSS instead of the outdated frames. I tried to reorganize the darkrooms so *i* could manage the little suckers better. Ye gods, what a headache. After much computer difficulties, I finally got rid of my old machine. Alas, that means my screen capture abilities have been diminished. So, the Darkrooms will be somewhat starved for a bit.

The new pages were constructed using Text Wrangler from Bare Bones Software, and a healthy dose of hammering my head against the excellent book CSS The Missing Manual, by David Sawyer McFarland, published by Pogue Press / O'Reilly. The graphics are the same as before so the GIMP still rules! Don't forget, it's available on all three platforms - Linux, Mac and Windows. And it is free.
