Innuendo

Sometimes in poetry it can be interesting to leave things a bit hazy ? to hint at things without saying them outright.

This is most often true when the thing to be said is risque or when you want to convey the idea that there is something more there ? something to be read ?between the lines?. It also helps if you are concerned about offending a certain group of people or your peers.

Too many times we read poetry that feels as though we?ve been spoon fed some unsweetened applesauce. It?s bland, simple, and uninteresting. Innuendo can add a bit of spice and texture to an otherwise boring read, without being crude or boorish. I find it can be a good way to write erotica without being cliched or overly graphic, or to add humor that might otherwise be offensive. You can also add depth to a piece so that it has a message that can be carried on 2 levels.
