Beware of language in the below commentary listed under the profile information BASIC PREMISE In Meifuu (or Meifu), world of the dead, when strange occurances surround a person's death and spirit, Shinigami (gods of death) are sent to investigate and solve what has happened and put the spirit in its proper place or realm. So, often as their name may suggest, they take the lives of people who did not die naturally or in the nature they were suppose to. The shinigami are deceased people who have been given physical form again, and who can visit earth (ChiJou) since they still have attachments to their previous lives, due usually to their own unsettled life dreams and ambitions, or circumstances of their demises. Their reasons for still being attached to life may or may not be selfish in nature, but is (or supposedly; depends on what you think is selfish). So most shinigami have dark and mysterious pasts and deaths that they have to deal with. The main cast of YnM are of the most highly respected Shoka Division, that is part of the EnMaCho judgement division that processes the information about new souls entering Meifuu. Shoka is the group of workers who actually go out and work to find missing souls. Ironically, and hilariously enough, Shoka is the most poorly financed and ill-budgeted and balanced division of EnMaCho (because of Tsuzuki), even for all its prestige. Even after death, life is full of paperwork and criminals, and that is how EnMaCho is set up; like office jobs. Tsuzuki Asato, the main characer, is happy-go-lucky, laid back, and a very dorky shinigami, even though that is a bit of a facade (he has horrible bouts with depression). Even though he's been doing this job for over 70 years, he is still in the poorest division and has the worst pay (or, it usually doesn't exist). He has a knack for not keeping partners, but then Hisoka comes along. Kurosaki Hisoka seems to be a more stubborn and determined partner than the ones he has had before; smart mouthed, very serious, and a defensive teenager. With each case the two solve, they come closer to the conspiracies of the serial killer, Dr. Muraki Kazutaka. It often seems that Muraki commits crimes just to torment gentle Tsuzuki. But, that doesn't seem to be the doctor's only agenda as much as he enjoys it...everything he does most certainly is building up to a bigger plan. Between the plots of Muraki, other cases, and the dramatic events of the shikigami (animal gods) world, life is very busy for Tsuzuki and Hisoka. Tsuzuki is becoming closer with his fellow comrades, especially with Hisoka. But there is a dark past to how Tsuzuki died...and we are left to wonder what it is.... Fuda spells (paper spells). He also has a very immense, mysterious power that seems to be of darkness (darkness, not evil maybe?). Before he died, he had gone insane, and hadn't had drink, food or sleep for 8 years without dying or hardly weakening. He may have had great healing powers for his body and other powerful energies and abilities while alive, before he died and became a shinigami. Tsuzuki is perpetually cheerful and energetic, so full of energetic stupidity, he often changes into a fuzzy dog version of himself. He also constantly blames himself for all tragedies that happen around him, and he always put other peoples' well being before his own. Because of this, he's known for his kindness and compassion. He is also known for being lazy, wasteful and a little meddlesome in his various situations, and has an extreme sweet tooth. He also can not keep partners very well for very long at all (which is required of shinigami to keep an eye on each other), but Hisoka has become an everlasting partner for him. The two just have a chemistry that works, even though Tsuzuki acts immature and Hisoka is constantly losing his temper at him. For whatever reason, Tsuzuki became attached to Hisoka very quickly in just their first case together. Tsuzuki may be that way with everyone, but it seems to be something even more or different this time. Even for all of Tsuzuki's stupidity, when it comes to his job as a god of death, he's all business. Tsuzuki is very protective of people, and especially of Hisoka. Many times Tsuzuki has wallowed in deep depression, thinking everything is his fault, which will often pull himself into the confines of his own mind. Since his body has always had great healing powers, he has great spiritual energy, and also the color of his eyes, Tsuzuki has often questioned his own humanity (especially since his own spiritual energy is so immense...and is of darkness [but not necessarily evil, who knows]). However, as the main character of YnM, virtually anything in his past is unknown. All we do know, is that he died in a mental hospital (owned and kept by Muraki's grandfather) in 1926 after being there since he was 18, having not slept, eat or drink his entire stay of 8 years, finally achieving the suicide he had been attempting all that time. His body would never die and hardly weaken after each of his suicide attempts, and he would be in and out of insanity wrought vegetable periods. But he finally achieved the suicide he wanted in 1926 even though he has a hard time remembering it after his death while being a shinigami and what happened during that period of his life. Because of these circumstancs, plus the color of his eyes, it may be possible that Tsuzuki isn't all human, which eats at him, because it's very important to him to be human. It seems he was raised by his older sister Ruka, and what exactly happened to his parents or the rest of his family is unknown. It seems that Tsuzuki committed some great sin (possibly involving a forbidden love), and being a shinigami may be part of a punishment for it. Whatever it may be, Enma (king of the underworld) wants Tsuzuki to stay close to the Enmacho division, so an eye can be kept on him, since they think he could easily turn to evil...only a very, very small amount of people seem to know what Tsuzuki had done, which includes the Chief Konoe. It's very ironic that he is a shinigami, since he doesn't like having to kill people, and maybe Enma making him stay as a shinigami for over a hundred years now is a form of punishment.... Interesting Extras: Tsuzuki is very good at dancing. His sister Ruka taught him how. She also taught him how to cook. Looks like she failed there. Commentary Holli: Turn to evil? I could never think that of Tsuzuki. I love the poor guy! Many may think he's pathetic, but just give the boy a break! Whatever he has been through, it's been a lot, and the sweetie just needs someone to love him and forgiveness from all existence. The only think that fucking pisses me off about his character is that we know nothing of his past and what great sin he supposedly peformed. GRR! I am entirely Tsuzuki x Hisoka all the way! Yay! He trying to become strong in fuda and also get his own shikigami. So far, he's had Riko the cactus (LOL) Sullen and slightly a loner, but very well mannered and observant, Hisoka is a boy with a very bad past and gruesome death. From birth, Hisoka has been an empath, with the ability to sense other people's emotions, and sometimes direct physical contact will pull him dangerously into someone else's thoughts and mind. Due to this ability, his family that is very old and ancient and is head of a village, locked him away in a cel for most of his childhood, terrified of his empath ability and labeling him a monster. One night when Hisoka was 13, he somehow managed to go for a walk in the middle of the night when the moon was full and it was almost as bright as day. He had the grave misfortune to stumble across a murder in progress; Muraki killing a woman near a sakura tree. Having seen Muraki's face, Hisoka tried to get away, but Muraki caught him, wrestled him to the ground and tore off all his clothing. Muraki viewed Hisoka as a precious play thing, because he is a very beautiful boy, and decided instead of a quick murder, he would erase Hisoka's memory of that night after he had subsequently raped him and wrote a curse on his body. For three long years, Muraki enjoyed cursing Hisoka to death very painfully and slowly until he died in 1996 at age 16. While it was always suspected that he may have been murdered, his death was blamed on an incurable disease. After death, Hisoka became a shinigami to discover why he died. He was partnered with Tsuzuki, and right off the bat, their first case dealt with Muraki, who managed to kidnap Hisoka and restore his memories of the night he was raped and cursed (since he still didn't know what had happened to himself). After the case was over, instead of moving on (and since he still didn't know if his issues with Muraki were resolved or not) Hisoka decided to stay as Tsuzuki's partner. Why, no one is sure, but Hisoka has become Tsuzuki's lasting partner, which had never happened before. He probably has done so, because he still wants to face Muraki, and also Tsuzuki was the first person ever to be so very humanly affectionate to Hisoka, so he may be emotionally attached to Tsuzuki. While he truly is slightly naive, Hisoka is constantly learning and is trying to build up his spiritual fighting abilities, especially with fuda. He's also been trying to get his own shikigami, but so far has been very unlucky. It's pretty apparent that he wants to not be treated like a kid (because he's not a kid anymore, even though he's trapped in a kid's body). Why he has remained as a shinigami seems to be because he still wants to face Muraki after becoming more powerful than him. And also, Tsuzuki may be protective of Hisoka, but Hisoka also wants to protect Tsuzuki (he is very protective of him), because he has become very attached to him. In more recent developments, it has been revealed that Hisoka's family is actually cursed..that it has been for generations, a family curse that is very seperate from Muraki's, that Hisoka has...and sadly, is almost better off that he had been murdered at a young age. Hisoka's father, Nagare, takes the brunt of the curse, as every first born male heir of the Kurosaki family is tortured (seemingly physically...and very disturbingly) by a demon in exchange for no harm to the village. The nature of the curse remains a secret from the village, since the myth was that the demon had been defeated, not still in existence and cursing the Kurosaki family. The people of the village are unaware of the curse, and assume the demon was destroyed long ago. It is a very complex situation. Nagare, Hisoka's father, is still under the curse, and Hisoka died before he could inherit the curse. Since a male heir needs to take the curse, for many generations, the Kurosaki family has killed all girls if they were first born. Hisoka's mother Rui is actually Nagare's second wife and the identical twin sister of his first wife, Kasane, since his first wife died of grief over their daughter being murdered by Nagare's older brother, Iwao, at birth. Because of this, Hisoka actually had an older half-sister, also named Hisoka. It's a mystery why Nagare became the heir of the family and the curse, even though he is not the oldest. It does seem to be hinted at that Nagare's father had loved and favored Iwao immensely, possibly ignoring Nagare's very existence. So, not to see his favored son suffer, he passed on the inheritance, and thus also the curse to Nagare. Even with the curse being in existence, Iwao seems to be more than angry about not becoming the Kurosaki heir. Overall, any kind of life this kid could have lead would have been hell. With what happened to him, his abilities, and all the horrible circumstances, it's no wonder he's a slight bit unsocialable and mistrustful. But, Hisoka is a very good person at heart, who just doesn't know how to express himself very well. Because of that, he's know for his blushing and quick temper with Tsuzuki. But, their different personalites are how they manage to compliment and work with each other. Interesting Extras: According to Yoko, if Hisoka had hit adulthood, he actually would have been 4 centimeters taller than Tsuzuki. Hisoka is definitely a guy! But, when Yoko was first developing YnM, Tsuzuki's lasting partner was going to be a female. Somewhere along the story development, Tsuzuki's partner become male, and along came Hisoka. Yay! Commentary Holli: Hisoka...poor, poor boy. At least we know his past, and even more is being revealed! I feel so sorry for this kid...he was raped, murdered slowly over 3 years, has that empath power that hurts him, treated like a kid, even though he's at least 18 now in the manga (right now in 2003 he would be 23) and he has his own curse and a family curse! And he's forever stuck in a kid's body! *cries* No wonder he's so unsociable. So give him a break! He is NOT a little bitch! And he's not a kid. Or a woman for that matter! So, quit trying to make him one! He may be pretty, but he is definitely very masculine in his behavior and decisions; Tsuzuki acts more girly than him! Plus he has martial arts and kicks ass! Yay! He has Tsuzuki for a partner, probably one of the most emotionally confused person I've ever read about. And he has that whole empath power, which makes anything Tsuzuki's feeling, 10 times worst! And he found out he was raped when he regained his memory, so he had to live through that experience again! But, even through all that he can still kick ass! He didn't crawl into a hole and lay in a fetal position and die (again...lol). You just have to give the boy some slack! So...LAY OFF!!! DAMN MURAKI!!! (Understandable, eh?)
