Chapter 14
Jana looked over at Nick with wide eyes. "What did you say?" She asked him slowly.
"I was trying to see if you were listening."
"Obviously I was. What in the hell did you say?"
"Nothing." Nick replied.
"Fucking liar you said what I thought you said."
"And?"
"And did you mean it?"
Nick shrugged looking at her.
"Well if you didn’t then why would you say it? Those are very powerful words."
"Not really."
Jana’s eyes got wider she sighed and was about to start talking but the elevator stopped and she just got off.
"Jana." Nick said from behind her.
Jana walked faster until she got to the door.
"I didn’t mean it."
"That’s even worse. Playing with those words like that and knowing how I feel about it." Jana replied as she turned around to stare at him.
"You weren’t listening to me."
"So you decided to get my attention?"
Nick nodded.
Jana just shook her head and began walking to her room.
"Well that was stupid Nick." Nick said to himself hitting his head on the wall.
Jana walked in the hotel room sighing really loud and leaning against the door.
"What’s wrong?"
"Nothing."
"Liar."
"Bitch." Jana snapped as she walked into the bathroom.
"Well that was different." Nikki said as she returned to watching TV.
"Jana wake up we have to leave for the airport." Nikki said while nudging Jana to wake up.
"Stop it." Jana replied swatting Nikki’s hand away.
"Come on."
"Fine." Jana said with a groan as she got out of the bed.
Jana made her way through the airport with Nikki half asleep running into the few people that were there. They finally found the gate they were supposed to get on and sat down. Jana got as comfortable as one could get in those airport chairs and tried to go back to sleep.
"Jana."
Jana eyes shot open and looked straight ahead to see Nick sitting in the chairs across from her. Jana sat up and looked at him waiting for him to talk.
"I’m sorry."
"Ok." Jana said simply and closed her eyes again.
"Ok? That’s all you’re going to say?"
"Uh huh." Jana replied yawning.
"So are you mad?"
"More hurt than mad."
"I’m sorry."
"You already said that."
"I didn’t mean to hurt you; I was just upset you were leaving. And that you weren’t exactly listening to me because you were thinking of Shawn and I got frustrated."
"But why those words?"
Nick shrugged.
"You could have said anything else but you chose those. Just tell me why."
"Because he fucking loves you and you fucking love him. You two are just to dumb to fucking see it. God damn, it’s like a fucking soap opera." Nikki mumbled from the seat next to Jana.
Jana looked at Nikki and back at Nick looking at her and said, "She’s a little cranky."
"Not fucking cranky. Tired of you two going along like this I swear you two are in a soap opera and you like it. Jana admit you like him, you have before you know you do and so does he. Nick same with you; you like her and she knows. Stop beating around the fucking bush and hook up." Nikki said then their flight was called.
"I have to go."
"You know she’s right." Nick said standing up with Jana.
"Uh huh."
"So are we going to do anything about it?"
"Do you want to?"
Nick smiled and gave her a kiss.
"I think that’s my answer." Jana said smiling back at Nick.
"So?"
"Yeah?"
"Oh my fucking god you two are a couple now. Not that hard to say. God damn it do I have to be your mother all the damn time?"
"You know she sounds like you." Nick whispered in Jana’s ear.
"Yeah." Jana replied laughing.
"I see you later."
"Call me?"
"Definitely."
"OK." Jana replied as she gave Nick another kiss and walked off smiling.
"That was kind of rude you know." Jana said as her and Nikki sat down.
"Rude? What the fuck? Shut up you know you needed that."
Jana tried not to smile and said, "No."
"Liar, its ok you can thank me later."
Jana rolled her eyes and laid her head back.
"So he said he loved you?" Nikki asked Jana in the cab on their way home from the airport.
"Yeah."
"And he didn’t mean it?"
Jana shrugged and said, "I don’t know."
"Not to be a bitch but I don’t think he did. I mean he’s a guy they say stupid shit all the time just to get your attention."
"I know." Jana said quietly.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"That was not a believable nothing."
"Shut up."
"Do you wish he did mean it?"
Jana looked up at Nikki and sighed.
"You do?"
Jana looked out the window ignoring the question.
"Oh my god I knew you liked him a lot. But you have really fallen in love with him haven’t you?"
Jana nodded slowly.
"Awe honey its ok."
"I know, I just I don’t know if it’s right you know? I haven’t known him long."
"It doesn’t take long for someone to fall for someone else."
"I know but I shouldn’t want to be with him."
"Jana you can’t help who you love. You’re not supposed to."
Jana looked at Nikki and started laughing and said, "Are we in Save the Last Dance now?"
"What?"
"You just quoted my favorite movie with my favorite quote."
Nikki smiled and said, "I know."
Jana shook her head and continued looking out the window.
"So are you going to tell him?"
"Fuck no."
"Why not?"
"Because every time I have fallen in love with someone I’ve told them and they have brushed me off. I’m tired of it. I don’t care if Nick says he won’t be like the others because he will no matter what he’ll do something and be just like them. I’m happy with him just in my life period and the kisses here and there aren’t bad either. I’m not going to ruin the friendship we have."
"But don’t you want to see if you can turn the friendship you have into a wonderful relationship?"
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I don’t want him to hurt me." Jana said quietly.
"Do you think he will?"
Jana looked at Nikki sighed and shook her head ‘no’.
"Then what’s the problem?"
"I don’t know." Jana replied whining a little.
"I’m really confused."
"Welcome to my world."
Nikki just stared at Jana.
"I’m not good enough for him. I’ll never be good enough. I mean god he’s Nick fucking Carter. And I’m just Jana."
"He obviously thinks you’re good enough."
"He’s delusional."
"He likes you."
"He may but I’m not used to the popular guy in high school liking me. That’s what it makes me feel like almost like the most popular guy in high school just asked me out and I have no clue what to say. It’s like he’s playing a trick on me or something."
"That’s crazy. You said before that you thought you were in love."
"I’m crazy. And I don’t know what you’re talking about."
"Of course you don’t." Nikki replied rolling her eyes.
"Whatever."
"You believe weird things. I think sometimes you just believe or say those things because you don’t want to even try."
"Duh!"
"Why is it so hard to believe that he really likes you?"
Jana shrugged and said, "Because no one has just liked me for the hell of it."
Nikki shook her head and said, "You are the most hard headed person I know."
"I know."
"I wish you could just see what you’re missing out on. How many girls would kill to be you right now?"
"Exactly that’s what it is he has millions of girls ready to rip their clothes off for him and he picks me."
"I’m done talking about this you’ll never bend or listen so I’m done."
"Fine." Jana said crossing her arms as the cab pulled into her apartment complex.
