“Shoot,” Nick replied as him and Kaitlyn sat down in a back booth.
“Exactly what does ‘I Want it That Way’ Mean?” Kaitlyn asked as she started to laugh.
“Uh?”
Kaitlyn started to laugh even more as she took a sip of her soda.
“Why?”
“Just curious.”
“Confusing?”
“Have you listened to it?” Kaitlyn asked cocking an eyebrow.
Nick nodded as he started to laugh.
Kaitlyn looked at him and just watched him laugh until he stopped and looked at her.
“What?”
Kaitlyn shook her head and said, “Nothing.”
“Alright,” Nick replied looking at her suspiciously and then he picked up his sandwich and started to eat it, glancing over at Kaitlyn every once and a while.
Kaitlyn perked up when the next song came on through the overhead speakers, she strained to hear it and then she smiled and started to bob her head with the music. “Oops I did it again, I played with you heart-,” she sang until she looked up at Nick who was glaring at her. She pressed her lips together smiling as she looked back down at her food.
“You like Britney?”
“Who doesn’t like Britney?”
Nick looked around and then raised his hand.
“But I thought she was your girlfriend?” Kaitlyn asked with wide eyes.
“Oh yeah, uh huh she is,” Nick replied rolling his eyes.
“Really? So could you answer a question?”
Nick smiled and said, “What?”
“Are her boobs real or not? I’m sure you’ve got a good feel of them,” Kaitlyn asked with a straight face.
Nick nearly spit his soda out all over Kaitlyn.
“What?” She asked innocently.
“I can’t believe you just asked that.”
“Why?”
“I don’t know you don’t seem like a girl to talk or think like that you know?”
“Like what exactly?”
“Never mind.”
“No elaborate. I’m dying to know what you mean,” Kaitlyn replied batting her eyelashes.
“I can see this isn’t going to turn out pretty already.”
“What?”
“You just seem very… what’s the word? Conservative. Or maybe that isn’t the word.”
Kaitlyn started to giggle a little.
“What?”
“Your face is turning a little pink.”
“Shut up.”
“It’s adorable,” Kaitlyn replied as she smiled at him.
“Really?”
Kaitlyn rolled her eyes and threw a fry at Nick.
“Hey, wasting food. There are starving kids in China.”
Kaitlyn busted out laughing.
“What?” Nick asked confused.
“Nothing, I just can’t believe you said that. My mom used to say that to me.”
“So you’ve always wasted food?”
“Yep, I’m picky.”
“Are you picky when it comes to everything?” Nick asked cocking an eyebrow.
“Hmm… uh huh.”
“Ah…”
“What?”
“Nothing.”
Kaitlyn eyed Nick as she took a drink of her soda and then she went back to eating her chicken nuggets.
“So what made you want to be a lawyer?”
“Nothing, I just decided I wanted to do that.”
“Really? Nothing inspired you to do it?”
“Not really. Growing up money was really tight and well I don’t want to live like my parents had to. Plus I’m intrigued by law.”
“Intrigued?”
Kaitlyn smiled and nodded.
“That’s cool.”
Kaitlyn shrugged and replied, “Eh, I guess. It’s obviously not as glamorous as the pop star lifestyle.”
Nick shook his head and rolled his eyes as he looked around and then back at her smiling.
She smiled back at him but then looked back down at her food.
Chapter 10
“I have a question.”
So maybe, just maybe it was a good idea to skip class. Maybe. I actually had a good time with Nick this afternoon. I don’t think I’ve ever talked to a guy about the things we talked about or as long as we did talk.
It’s kind of refreshing, to know that I can talk to him, I guess. Geez… what am I saying? I don’t even know. Let’s just put this way, I like to hang out with him. No more than that of course and when he leaves it’s not going to be the same, he’ll go off and be the great pop star that he is and I’ll go back to well being regular me with a pop star friend. Simplicity.
“Hey Kaylee I brought you back a happy meal. You’re watching ‘Moulin Rouge’ without me?”
“You went off to lunch with lover boy I had to occupy my time somehow.”
Kaitlyn sighed as she flopped down next to Kaylee handing her the McDonalds bag. “Oh, I got back just in time for the elephant scene.”
“So how did it go?”
“Extremely well thanks for asking.”
“God, do you have to be so damn polite?”
“Yes,” Kaitlyn replied grinning.
“It bugs me.”
“I know.”
Kaylee rolled her eyes as she sat up and started to rummage through the McDonalds bag. “They only gave me one Sweet and Sour thing.”
“Shh…” Kaitlyn replied as she turned the volume up on the TV.
Kaylee rolled her eyes as she started to eat really loud just to bug Kaitlyn.
In response Kaitlyn just turned up the volume some more.
“Your mom called while you were out,” Kaylee said a few minutes later.
Kaitlyn looked at Kaylee wide eyed.
Kaylee smiled innocently, “Yeah, I told her you were with Nick.”
“What? Why would you do that?”
“Because you didn’t invite me to go,” Kaylee replied simply.
“I bet right about now she’s picking out my wedding invitations.”
“Probably.”
“Uh,” Kaitlyn replied as she slouched down on the couch putting her hands over her face.
Kaylee looked at Kaitlyn and then back at the TV smiling and then she started to sing along with the movie, extremely bad.
“Stop.”
“Come what may! Come what may! I will love you until my dying day,” Kaylee sang at the top of her lungs as she did extremely dramatic arm movements.
“Kaylee.”
“Don’t you want that?”
Kaitlyn looked over at Kaylee, “What?”
“That kind of love or hell just love.”
Kaitlyn sat there a minute and then said, “Yeah.”
Kaylee looked at Kaitlyn shocked. “Then why are you not interested in a boyfriend or Nick?”
“Because.”
“Why?”
“I don’t want that right now.”
“So you will one day?”
“Maybe.”
“Huh?”
“I don’t know. I’d love to have that and be in love like that but that’s a movie not reality. Things like that don’t happen.”
“Bullshit.”
“Bullshit?”
“Yeah, things like that can happen if you allow them to.”
“What are you now?”
“Just trying to convince you to give Nick or hell anybody a chance.”
“Why?”
“You need it.”
“I don’t,” Kaitlyn replied as she got up off the couch and walked down the small hallway into her bedroom.
Kaylee shook her head and then turned back to the TV and went back to singing along with the movie.
I’m dreading the phone call I have to make to my mother. I know Kaylee told her that on purpose just to get her all excited that there was a possibility I’d have a boyfriend this century. God. And now I’m going to have to explain to my mother that well he is just my friend and that’s all he’ll ever be. A friend nothing else. I really don’t want to call her because I know she’s excited and well I never like to let my mother down and disappoint her.
All my life I’ve always thought about decisions I had to make and keeping in mind if I did this or not would my mother be proud or disappointed. We’ve always been extremely close and well I’ve always wanted her to be proud of me. And I know now she is just beaming because she is thinking that I have a boyfriend and what not. And now I have to tell her the truth. Ugh.
Kaitlyn sighed heavily as she laid back on her bed. She grabbed her phone off of the side table and dialed her mother’s phone number.
“Hello?”
Kaitlyn groaned her mother sounded extra cheery. “Hi mom.”
“Kaitlyn dear how are you? Back from your date already? How come you didn’t tell me you had a boyfriend?”
Kaitlyn closed her eyes as she shook her head. This was going to be a long conversation she could see that already.
