“And I was thinking that maybe you two can come up and visit me next weekend or something your dad will be home I’m sure he’ll want to meet this new guy in your life. So tell me about him? His name is Nick right? How old is he? Is he in college-?”
“Mom!” Kaitlyn said again but louder interrupting her mother’s ramblings that had been going on for a good twenty minutes.
“Yeah honey?”
Kaitlyn sighed, “I have to tell you something.”
“What dear?”
“Uh… Nick is.”
“What?”
“He uh… is busy next weekend,” Kaitlyn blurted out. She slapped her forehead and shook her head as she waited for her mother’s reply.
“Oh, alright then how about this weekend coming up?”
“Uh… I don’t know,” Kaitlyn replied looking around.
“Ok well honey you find out and then let me know alright?”
Kaitlyn sighed, “Ok.”
“I have to go dear.”
“Alright mom.”
“Bye honey I love you.”
“Uh huh me too,” Kaitlyn replied as she hung up the phone and then started to use it to hit herself in the head.
“So… Nick’s busy next weekend? I didn’t hear you tell your mom he wasn’t your boyfriend,” Kaylee said as she casually walked into Kaitlyn’s room.
Kaitlyn groaned as she rolled over.
“You didn’t tell her did you?”
“I wouldn’t have to if you didn’t say anything.”
“Does she think he is your boyfriend?”
Kaitlyn sat up, “What do you think?”
“Yes.”
“Bingo.”
“And you let her believe it?”
“I couldn’t tell her the truth.”
“Why not?”
“Because I didn’t want to disappoint her I already have because I’m not married yet or something. And I just couldn’t bear to let her down.”
“I think she’d understand that I have a big mouth and I just wanted to piss you off because you refused to give me details.”
“She probably would have but I didn’t go that route.”
“What are you going to do?”
“I don’t know,” Kaitlyn snapped.
“Alright, well I’m going to leave now,” Kaylee replied as she walked out of the room.
Chapter 11
“Hey mom?”
Don’t say it. Don’t judge me. I feel like such an idiot.
I seriously don’t know what possessed me to say that. I should have told her the truth. But why couldn’t I? God, I can’t believe I did that. I hate to lie. Lying is so horrible and especially lying to your mother? God, I’m a horrible person. I should call her back and tell her the truth but now it’s complicated. Because I’m going to have to explain to her why I lied. Oh man.
And now Kaylee knows her and her big mouth and now her eavesdropping ways. I could hit her. If I hit people or if I could hit people I’d hit her. Ok no I wouldn’t but still she has the biggest mouth in the world. Ugh…
What am I going to do? So much for simplicity I’ve just complicated things royally.
“Wakey wakey,” Kaylee said as she poked Kaitlyn’s side.
Kaitlyn rolled over groaning as she threw her cover over her head.
“Come on… time to get up.”
Kaitlyn groaned again and then swatted at Kaylee’s hand that continued to poke her.
Kaylee started to laugh and said, “Nick’s here.”
Kaitlyn jumped up and looked around her room and then back at Kaylee who was laughing so hard she fell backwards. “Seriously?” Kaitlyn asked as she pushed her hair behind her ears.
Kaylee controlled her laughter and then said, “Nah, just wanted to wake you up.”
Kaitlyn glared at Kaylee as she watched her get up grinning and then walk out of her room.
Someone please remind me why I’m friends with such a nut. She does this to me all the time. And I think she just enjoys making me angry.
So…I was hoping I’d wake up today and all that happened last night to be a dream. But nope I still feel shitty about what I told my mom and well I’m still clueless as to what I should do about it. I should just tell her the truth. But well I have a little too much pride for that.
Ugh… I’m going to blame all of this on Kaylee. It’s all her fault.
Kaitlyn staggered out of her room putting her hair into a ponytail in the process she started to scratch her stomach and then her arm as she entered the living room still not fully awake.
“Isn’t she just oh so fetching in the morning?” Kaylee asked laughing.
Kaitlyn looked over at Kaylee and then to the other person in the room… Nick. Her mouth hit the floor as she looked between Nick and Kaylee both of which were grinning like idiots. Kaitlyn looked back at Kaylee trying to have a conversation with her using her eyes, because Kaylee said he wasn’t here, but it wasn’t working.
“What’s wrong Kaitlyn?” Kaylee asked.
“What? Why? Where? Why… are you here?” She asked pointing at Nick.
“Uh… Kaylee told me to come over.”
Kaitlyn slowly looked over at Kaylee and glared at her.
“What?” She asked innocently.
Kaitlyn crossed her arms and continued to glare at her.
“I told him you wanted to tell him something that you couldn’t do over the phone.”
Kaitlyn’s eyes grew wide as she stared at Kaylee.
Kaylee just grinned back at Kaitlyn while Nick looked between the two girls rather confused.
“Kaylee, can I speak with you in the kitchen?” Kaitlyn asked Kaylee through her teeth as she walked into the kitchen.
“Nick, if I’m not back in twenty minutes call the police,” Kaylee said as she got up and causally walked into the kitchen.
“I could kill you dead. Without a trace no one would even know you were gone,” Kaitlyn said as she walked up to Kaylee grabbed the collar of her shirt.
“Kaitlyn are you ok? You’re scaring me.”
“What? Did you just ask that? Were you in there just a while ago?”
“Yeah, why are you upset? Did I do something to upset you?”
“I can’t believe you. No wait I can believe you. Ugh, seriously I could hurt you.”
“Hey I just did you a favor.”
“A favor?!? I’m sorry, so I should be thanking you now?”
Kaylee stood there a minute and then released Kaitlyn’s grip on her shirt and backed away, “Yeah.”
“Ugh,” Kaitlyn replied frustrated as she stormed off back into her room slamming the door behind her.
Shoot me now. Please. Someone just shoot me now. I’m so embarrassed. God, I don’t even know why really. Well, yes I do. First off Nick sees me in my pajamas scratching my stomach like I’m Al Bundy or something. Ugh…
And now I’m just hiding in here because well I don’t feel like making an ass out of myself. Seriously. Because what am I supposed to say? Uh, Nick? I kind of let my mother believe that you are my boyfriend. Nah. Dude, I’d rather tell my mother the truth instead of telling Nick that and having him pretend or something. I’d rather have my mom be disappointed than Nick thinking that I’m an idiot or whatever else he could think of.
God, I feel so awful about this. I should just call my mom and tell her the truth. But she sounded so happy. Like I said before my parents are old fashion and my mom would love for me to be married and having babies right and left so she can be a grandma. She wants to be a grandmother more than anything. I don’t know why but she does. You’d think she’d be forcing me to finish school and find a great job you know. Nope, she’d rather me be a housewife. My dad on the other is completely different. He’d rather me never get married and never get close to a boy let alone have kids. But you know aren’t all fathers like that about their daughters?
I just… uh… don’t know what to do. I’ve said it once I can say it again. So much for simplicity. I need to go out and scream. Scream loud at the top of my lungs while I pull my hair out.
“Kaitlyn,” Kaylee said in a sweet voice as she knocked lightly on Kaitlyn’s door.
“She died,” Kaitlyn mumbled against her pillow.
Kaylee laughed on the other side of the door and said, “Now now, Nick is waiting for you.”
“Tell him I’m dead.”
“I can’t.”
“Why the hell not?” Kaitlyn snapped.
“Because he knows you came in here?”
“Kaylee I swear you do not want me to get up because I will hurt you and it won’t be pretty.”
Kaylee took a step back from the door as if Kaitlyn was right in front of her. So maybe she crossed a line. Never in all the time she has known Kaitlyn she never ever heard her talk in that tone of voice. Kaylee turned around and walked into the living to see Nick reading a Cosmo magazine. Kaylee put her hands on her hips and looked at Nick and shook her head. “What are you doing?”
Nick jumped and threw the magazine back down on the coffee table, “Oh… uh… Nothing.”
“Bullshit I saw you reading that? Anything good?” Kaylee replied as she sat down on the couch.
“Uh… so?”
“Oh uh… she’s not going to come out. I guess I crossed a line or something.”
“So she doesn’t have anything to tell me?”
“I don’t know.”
“I’m confused.”
“Join the club.”
“Ok well I’m going to go then.”
“Bye.”
“Yeah,” Nick replied as he walked out of the door closing it tight behind him.
Kaylee crossed her arms sighing as she looked around the room before she turned on the TV.
