Feels Like Home

Chapter 4

Nick got out the car in front of the studio. He sighed as he looked at the building while he stood there. Taking a deep breath he slowly started walking to the entrance of the building. He walked down the familiar hallway looking at all the pictures that decorated the walls; he smiled when he saw the first Backstreet album hanging there, it seemed like so long ago.

"Hey guys." He said as he walked into the room to see the other four guys.

"Nick you’re late." Kevin said as Nick sat down next to A.J.

"You never change Kev." He said laughing.

"How’s the family?" A.J asked looking at Nick.

"They’re fine."

"Alyssa still daddy’s little girl?" Brian asked.

Nick grinned, "Of course."

"I feel sorry for that girl when she wants to start dating." AJ said.

"Why?" Nick asked him looking at him weird.

"Because you’re not going to let her look at a boy let alone date one."

"Well do you blame him when there are boys likes yours running around?" Howie asked.

"Shut up." AJ replied.

"What happened?" Nick asked looking around the room.

"Tyler got in trouble for chasing all the girls and kissing them on the playground." Kevin said laughing.

"See if I tell you guys anything again." AJ said pouting.

Nick started laughing and said, "You seem surprised AJ it is your kid you know."

AJ gave him a dirty look.

"Ok let’s get started. We have a lot to do." Kevin said clapping his hands.

"This is sad you know." Howie said as they walked into the booth.

"The last Backstreet album, it’s been one hell of a journey." AJ said as he put his headphones on while the others shook their heads in agreement.

"So how’s it going?" Jana asked Nick over the phone the next day.

"Better than we thought we finished two songs already."

"Nice."

"So how is everything there?"

"Trenton is at school and Alyssa is taking a nap. Oh and Nikki is going to come and spend a few days or weeks with us."

"Why?"

"Her and Mike are getting a divorce and well that’s all I know. I just got off the phone with her. She is leaving for the airport in a few hours. She hasn’t told me much she said she missed me and she wanted to see the kids. It’s not like I’m going to turn her down."

"Well you know you’ll have to send my love to her."

"Yeah I’m sure she’ll love that." Jana said laughing.

"Well baby we’re going to get back to work. I’ll talk to you in a few days. I love you."

"I love you too. Bye." Jana said smiling then hung up the phone.

------------------------------------------------------

"Now you two hold on to my hand real tight." Jana said as grabbed Trenton and Alyssa’s hands making their way into the airport.

"How long is Aunt Nikki going to stay?" Trenton asked looking up at Jana.

"A while."

"A long while?"

"Probably."

"YAY!" He said jumping up and down.

"Stop it Trenton." Jana said sternly looking down at him.

They got to the gate Nikki was coming from and saw her standing there waiting.

"Hey you’re late."

"You try walking with two small people." Jana said laughing as they hugged.

"I missed you girl." Nikki said as she hugged Jana tight.

"I know missed you too." Jana said as they separated.

"Hey you guys." Nikki said kneeling down to hug both the kids.

"Aunt Nikki." They both said falling into her arms.

"They love me." Nikki said smiling up at Jana.

"Yeah, come on let’s get out of here." Jana said grabbing Trenton’s hand while Nikki grabbed Alyssa’s hand.

"You know it’s so weird to see you of all people with kids and a mini van for God’s sake." Nikki said laughing as she put her things in the back of the van.

"I know it’s crazy." Jana replied buckling up the kids.

"Never thought out of all of our friends you’d be the little housewife."

"Hey, I’m not a housewife." Jana snapped as she got into the driver’s seat.

"Ok." Nikki replied laughing.

"We’re here." Jana said as she pulled into the garage.

"They’re asleep."

"It’s late for them. Most of the time they are in bed by eight."

"Wow, and now it’s almost midnight." Nikki said sarcastically.

Jana glared at her as she got out of the car. "Help me. Will you take Alyssa?" Jana asked Nikki while she was getting Trenton out of the car.

Nikki nodded.

"I love your kids." Nikki said, after they put them to bed, to Jana as they sat on couch.

Jana laughed lightly and said, "Yeah I love them too."

Nikki smiled then started to stare off into space.

"So you going to tell me what’s going on with Mike?"

"Not right now."

"Ok." Jana said.

"How are you and Nick?"

"Fine." Jana said quietly.

"What happened?"

"Nothing."

"Liar."

Jana smiled a little.

"Tell me."

"We just had a fight."

"And?"

"God you always make me feel like I’m in court, on the stand testifying or something."

Nikki laughed and said, "I always wanted to be a lawyer. So you guys had a fight? What happened? Did he hit you? So help me God if he did, I’m going to de ball him."

Jana started laughing and said, "No he didn’t hit me."

"Then what?"

Jana shrugged and said, "I don’t know, we just had a fight. It’s been a while since we had a fight, you know. So I just started thinking about our big fight before the wedding, for some reason."

"Oh that fight." Nikki said nodding.

Jana started to laugh and said, "Yeah that one."

"I think if I was you then, I would have de balled him"

"What’s up with de balling guys tonight?" Jana asked laughing.

"I don’t know, it sounds fun. It could be, you never know."

"You’re not right." Jana said shaking her head.

"So why were you thinking about that fight?"

Jana shrugged in response looking at her nails.

"Ok we’ll come back to that because you are going to tell me what’s going on."

They sat in silence for a while. Nikki just stared off in space while Jana played with her nails thinking about Nick.

"Jana, how do you do it?"

"Do what?"

"You know all this. How do you keep it together?"

Jana started laughing and said, "I don’t keep it together. Ask the kids they think I’m mean."

Nikki laughed.

"You know, sometimes I wish I didn’t have them sometimes I wish I was single again without anything to worry about. One day I wish I could get up whenever I wanted and not when my kids get up. I know this all sounds so horrible. But sometimes I just think that I’m not cut out for all the parenting shit. I mean I love them so much. But damn it, it’s been so long since me and Nick had a quiet night together. Well actually I take that back, his birthday Jane took the kids. But that was the first night since I couldn’t even tell you when."

"Maybe you and Nick should take a vacation." Nikki suggested.

"I’d love to do that. But it won’t happen."

"Why not? I can watch the munchkins."

Jana shrugged.

"What you don’t trust me?"

"I didn’t say that. I just… I don’t know if I can do that. Because I’ve never been gone away from both of them. I’m not sure my nerves could take that. The whole time I’d be wondering what they were doing."

"So you don’t trust me?"

"No I do. I know how good you are with kids."

"Then when Nick gets back you two are going on a vacation."

Jana smiled and said, "Are you sure? They are a handful."

"Yes, since I don’t have kids I’ll play with yours." Nikki said laughing.

"Ok." Jana said sighing.
