Nick and Jana left the house hurriedly, after they called their normal babysitter to watch Alyssa while they were gone. Jana didn’t want to do that after what happened but Kayla had been babysitting for them since Trenton was little so Nick insisted on it.
They headed towards the police station anxious and nervous and everything in between.
"Nick, slow down I want to make it to the damn police station." Jana said as she pulled her seat belt tighter.
"Don’t tell me how to drive." Nick snapped at her.
She shook her head and crossed her arms as she looked out the side window.
//March 26, 2006\\
"Damn it Nick you have to slow down." Jana said as she held onto to her seat belt and her stomach.
"We have to get you to the hospital." Nick said as he swerved the car to avoid hitting another car.
"The baby isn’t going to just pop out; it’ll be ok if we take more than ten minutes." Jana said when they stopped at a red light.
"I can’t help it I’m excited damn. And don’t tell me how to drive." Nick replied as he stepped on the gas when the light changed.
Jana just shook her head as she sighed and tightened her seat belt a little tighter. You couldn’t tell Nick anything about driving, he would never listen. When it came to driving you couldn’t tell him anything.
"Well we made it here in record time." Jana mumbled as she got out of the car.
Nick waited for her to catch up to him and then grabbed her hand as they walked into the station. She looked over at Nick and then straight ahead as they made their way into Officer Martin’s office.
"Ah, Jana and Nick good to see you again. I’m glad you could make it."
"You told us to come as soon as possible." Nick said slightly annoyed.
"I know." Officer Martin replied as he sat back down behind his desk.
"So do you have news on Trenton?" Jana asked softly.
Officer Martin looked at the both of them and said, "We got the surveillance tapes from the mall."
"Do you see what happened to Trenton?" Nick asked hopeful.
"The way the camera was angled we only can see him talking to a man and then you can pretty much tell that he walked away with him. But it’s something at least. We wanted you to see the tapes to see if you could identify the man as someone you know or not."
Jana and Nick both nodded and swallowed hard as they stared back at Officer Martin.
Officer Martin looked at them and asked. "Are we waiting for Nikki?"
"No, why?" Nick asked.
"Well she was there and she might be able to help."
Nick snorted at the thought of Nikki helping them.
"Nick will you stop god." Jana said shaking her head.
Nick cut his eyes over to her glaring while Jana just stared back at him.
"So I take that as a no?"
"I didn’t really think about it, but I think it won’t hurt for her to see them as well." Jana said still staring at Nick.
"Ok, you want to call her?" Officer Martin asked as he picked up the phone and offered it to Jana.
Jana nodded and took the phone from him and then dialed Nikki’s cell phone number.
"Hello?" Nikki asked softly.
"Nikki, where are you?"
"A cab on the way to the airport."
"Nikki, I don’t want you to leave. The police got the surveillance tapes from the mall and we are going to watch them." Jana said as Nick glared at her even more.
"And what does that have to do with me?"
"Well you were there, they want us to watch and see if we can identify the man who was talking to Trenton and maybe you can help as well."
"I doubt it."
"Nikki please?" Jana asked while Nick gave her a look like she was crazy.
Nikki sighed on the other end of the phone and sat there in silence while Jana sat there waiting impatiently for her reply.
"Nikki?"
"I don’t know if I can stand be around Nick anymore, with him yelling at me and all that shit."
"I promise Nick will be nice." Jana said looking at Nick sternly.
"I don’t know."
"Nikki, please what if you know who it is and we don’t but if you don’t see it then how will know?"
"I highly doubt it Jana."
"Just do it damn it, ok?" Jana asked growing angry.
Nikki sighed and said, "Fine, but I don’t think I’ll be much help."
"I don’t care, so we’re at the police station. We’ll wait for you."
Nikki sighed again and said, "Ok."
"Bye." Jana said and then hung up the phone smiling.
"She is coming?" Nick asked annoyed.
Jana nodded as she looked over at him. "Yeah, she might be some help."
"Bullshit."
Jana shook her head and said, "God, Nick your attitude isn’t helping the situation any you know that right? You can’t take the fact that someone took our son out on her."
"I can take it out on anyone I want."
"Real mature Nick." Jana replied rolling her eyes.
Nick sat back in the chair frustrated and crossed his arms.
"I’m going to call Kayla." Jana said as she got up.
Nick watched her. "Why?" He asked looking at her weird.
"Just checking up on them."
"Jana we’ve been gone twenty minutes."
Jana shrugged and said, "So." Then she walked out of the door.
Nick shook his head and turned back around to see Officer Martin laughing lightly. "What?" He asked confused.
"Nothing, you two are just funny together."
Nick looked at him strange and said, "Ok, what’s that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing, I’m just saying you two are funny." He replied shrugging.
Nick leaned back in his chair again and sighed as he looked around the room. "How many cases do you get like this?" He asked breaking the silence that fell over the room.
Officer Martin looked up from what he was writing and said, "Truthfully?"
Nick nodded slowly.
"Too many." He replied softly.
"How many turn out bad?"
"Nick, this isn’t going to help."
"I know but I just want to know."
"You don’t want to know." Officer Martin replied softly.
Nick looked at him for a minute and then started to stare at his hands.
Twenty minutes later Nick, Jana, and Nikki were sitting in a different room with a few other officers as well as Officer Martin getting ready to watch the tapes.
"Everyone ready?" An officer asked as he looked around the room.
They all nodded and he pushed play. The first part of it was just of people walking around.
"Ok, there is Nikki and the kids." Officer Martin said as they came into view.
It showed Trenton say something to Nikki and then run off while she said something to him again and then looked at Alyssa.
"Where did he go?" Nick asked confused.
"That’s the first tape; the other tape shows him with the man." Officer Martin replied as the other officer put in the other tape.
"Ok, see there he is going that way and then you see the man step in front of him." Officer Martin said as they all watched intently.
"It’s a little blurry." Nick said as he squinted.
"Yeah. Ok now the man says something and grabs Trenton’s hand and they walk off and stop the man looks around and then says something to him again and then they walk out of view of the camera." Officer Martin said as they stopped the tape.
"I could barely see the guy, it went to fast." Nick said.
"We’ll rewind and pause it."
They rewound the tape and played it again and then paused it on the best shot of the man they could get. The officers sat there and watched Nick, Jana, and Nikki stare intensely at the TV. Nikki looked over at Jana as she stared at the man and then back at the TV.
Nick sat back and said, "I’ve never seen him before."
Nick looked over at Jana and Nikki as well as Officer Martin. Jana looked up at Officer Martin. "I have." She said sighing and then she looked back down at her hands and then up at Nick who was looking at her strangely.
