Barry Allen was working in his lab one night and he was struck by lightning. Chemicals from a nearby cabinet spilled all over him. Soon after this freak accident he found out that he could run at super speeds. The reason the chemicals made him gain super powers is because the chemicals are part of the Speed Force.
You are probably wondering what the Speed Force is. Well I'm going to describe it to you the best I can.
The Speed Force is an energy of field beyond the speed of light. All Superhero Speedsters draw their power from the Speed Force. It only powers any being not naturally fast. Every Flash is said to have a link to the Speed Force.
