Chapter thirty nine

Zac woke up with a start.

The room somehow looked darker, more dreary then it had the night before. Or maybe it was his mind playing tricks on him. He couldn't really tell.

In either event, the sports watch on his wrist told him it was almost eight, and times to get up, if not to leave.

He looked over at his friend. Zac Dentra lay on the sofa, quietly breathing.

Standing up from his newfound sleeping place, the corner, he paused, looking around at the now so clean room that it hadn't been the night before. So D had found something usefull to do.

Walking to the sofa, he tripped, stumbling over the backpack full of schoolbooks and empty bags. Picking himself up he walked, this time more carefully to his friend.

"D dude, get up man, we gotta go."

His friend stirred, only turning over on his other side.

"D man we gotta run now dude."

Zac's head felt light, strangely enough, he must still have some sort of buzz. He had to admit last night was kick ass. Everything about it, and he didn't understand why his best bud didn't do it more often. He could convince him he was sure.

Gently shoving on D, he got closer.

"Zac, get up man! We have to go, it's almost eight o'clock and we didn't even tell anyone where we were going. So get your fat ass up off the sofa and lets get a move on!"

His friend's eyes popped open. Groggily he sat up, blinking several times before he yawned.

"What Han?"

They looked at eachother and could not help but giggle at their appearance.

"We gotta go home, you know, before they like, call the police on us."

Zac Dentra reached down, grabbing his shoes off the floor and slowly pulling them on his feet and tying them.

"D."

"What."

Zac Hanson looked down at his friend.

"No way Han. I told you once, once is all, and once is what I mean, no more."

"D."

"Zac NO! I already told you. Be happy I said yes to this once. Be happy. Don't push it."

Zac Dentra stood, grabbing his pack from the floor and unlocking the office door.

"Lets go."

Taylor's head lay in Mercy's lap.

"Tay."

"Yeah."

"What are we gonna do today?"

"What we do every day Mey. Try and take over the world."

She giggled grabbing g a pillow and stuffing it in his face.

"What! This is not a good idea to you?"

She smiled, rolling him off the bed.

"Mey."

Dorin stood in the door way to her room.

"Whatie?"

"You didn't happen to hear Zac come in the door last night did you?"

Mercy sat back in thought.

"Nope, didn't."

Dorin turned to Taylor.

"You?"

Shaking his head, Taylor shrugged.

"Sorry door."

"Damnit."

Dorin turned to walk away.

"Why dude?"

Dorin stopped.

"Well cause your mom called this morning and said neither of them had gone to your place, and they haven't come here, so where the hell are they?"

Taylor frowned. Very unlike his younger brother to just disappear.

"They'll turn up bro. Don't worry about them."

Mercy reassured her brother as he thumped down the steps.

"Is it always this cold?"

"It's not really that cold out Han."

"Hell it's not!"

"Well dumb ass don't smoke reefer and you wouldn't feel that way."

Zac Hanson giggled at his friend's remark.

"Can you not giggle? We are about to walk into my house, and explain where we've been all night, and with you giggling, it's just not going to go over well."

They both put on their serious faces.

"Thank you."

They walked down the street, not yet busy with the Saturday's commotion.

"Heya D, how are you going to explain this one?"

"How else do you think I got away with it for so long? Watch and learn Bat boy."

"Bat boy? What's that make you, Mr. Bat the Bat man."

"Cut the crap Han."

The air was crisp and cold as they walked up the porch steps and grabbed the door handle.

"Here's to nothing."

Zac Dentra stepped into the house first, followed by Zac Hanson, throwing his pack down by the door and walking past Dorin who sat on the sofa.

"Ahem?"

Zac stopped, turned around and looked at his brother.

"What."

"Care to explain to the rest of the world where you two disappeared to last night?"

"If we explained to the rest of the world, that would be just one more thing that they would know."

"Where were you?"

"Spending the night at Kevin's."

"Do I need to call there?"

"Door! What do you think we were doing? Running around town with Eric bashing in store windows and stealing anything and everything we could?"

Dorin shrugged.

"Just wish you would have told me you were staying over there that's all."

"Sorry."

The two Zac's raced up the stares to his room.

Jumping up on the bed, they lay down.

"Nice one D."

"Thankyavery much."

"Gotta teach me how to do that."

"Later."

"Kay."

"Let's sleep."

"D you come up with the best ideas sometimes."

Taylor had climbed up on the bed again, this time, his head on mercy's shoulder.

"We can just sit here for the rest of the day, no problem at all."

Mercy sighed.

"You know, if we tour…."

"Ohhhhh. Mercy's gonna tour eh. Nice."

"I said if."

"Oh sorry, anyway, what were you saying."

"There's gonna be no more time."

"For what."

"Everything."

"Yup. S'okay."

"And it looks like Josh is trying to get us doing something."

"You mean advertise, tell the world your life, then let the fans come screaming?"

"I spose that would be how it goes."

They paused.

"Tay Tay."

"Hmm?"

"Let's go do something."

"Like what?"

"Build a snow man."

"There's not enough snow."

"We'll manage."

"Nah. They got home safe."

Isaac walked in the house past Dorin.

"Mom was pissed."

"Your mom! Pissed! Wow, woulda liked to have seen that one."

Isaac rolled his eyes.

Isaac's nineteen-year-old self still stood a couple inches over Dorin, Dorin had a feeling it was going to stay that way.

"Haven't talked to you lately. So what's up Ike?"

The two sat down at the kitchen counter.

"Everything and anything."

"Oh?"

Isaac shrugged.

"Care to explain?"

"Well, Chris is adamant that we get to work on a new album, and try working out a tour for next fall."

"You guys just toured though."

"Not just, but close enough."

"You up for it?"

"Do I look up for it?"

Dorin laughed.

"Angie wants more of my time."

"Is that a bad thing?"

"Well, no."

"Then don't complain, at least you have a girlfriend."

"Okay, sure. You'll get one. Then you'll see."

"Well, anything else?"

"Taylor is never home anymore."

"Yeah, I know, he's upstairs."

"Duh. His car is outside, he's always upstairs."

"Well, what to expect?"

"Zac's never home."

"He's upstairs."

"Yeah, I know. Seems like my entire family lives here."

"No no, just the two brothers you happen to make music with."

They chuckled.

Isaac looked around the kitchen.

"You guys are lucky."

"How so?"

"You don't have parents to still tell you what to do, and when to do it. There's only you guys, so your not surrounded by younger siblings. You don't have to buy buses to get the family somewhere."

"You think we're lucky for that?"

Isaac paused.

"Sort of yeah."

"Why?"

"Well cause sometimes it all gets to be too much."

"How on earth do you figure? Sometimes we tell ourselves how lucky you guys are."

Isaac shrugged.

"It's getting old."

"Family never gets old."

"Zac!!"

"Both of you! Get up!"

Zac Hanson was the first to wake. Must be a curse he had.

Dorin stood at the foot of the steps, yelling up at them.

"YOU TWO GET UP NOW! DINNER NOW!"

"Door! We're up already!"

The yelling ceased as Zac heard Dorin walk away into the kitchen.

"Yo D, time to rise, we got fooooooodddd."

Zac Dentra sat up, silently standing to his feet and shaking his head.

No more buzz, no more tingle. Nothing left. Oh well.

"What."

"Dinner."

The two stepped out the door and raced down the steps.

They walked into the kitchen where, Taylor, Mercy, Isaac and Dorin already sat around the table.

"Morning…. or evening whichever you prefer."

The two pulled up a seat and waited for the food to be passed their way.

"Who cooked?"

Zac Hanson looked around the table.

"Mey did."

"Mey cooks?"

Zac Dentra reached over and playfully smacked his friend.

"Duh."

"Duh yourself. She just doesn't look like the 'cooking' kinda person."

"Ooh Kay."

Dorin passed the mashed potatoes.

"So what did you guys do last night?"

Zac Hanson looked up from his eating.

"Nothing, just watched movies. Ate popcorn, talked about Mercy and Taylor's love life."

Taylor rolled his eyes and Mercy stuck her tongue out at her younger brother.

"So you had fun?"

"Of course we did Door. We always have fun. Duh."

D widened his eyes as he passed the vegetables around the table.

"Zac?"

Zac Dentra looked up from his consistent shoveling.

"What?"

"You heard from Jem lately?"

Zac paused for a moment, searching his brain for some fictional answer.

"Uh, no not for a while really door."

Truth of the matter, last week. He and Zac Hanson had had to go to his brother's house in order to pick up the necessary stuff. In other words, what they had indulged upon the previous night. Jem had looked run down, unhappy.

"Well Zac if you see him or talk to him, tell him that Josh is starting to set up a schedule, so we need to talk to him."

"Yeah sure, if I see him."

Dorin looked down at his meal.

Zac Hanson cast a wary look in his friends direction, and wasn't aware his oldest sibling had caught it
