Too Many Risks

Chapter 3

...There I was standing in my backyard all alone again. Waiting for the whistle
from next door of my friend Tobias. It was 11:00pm on the dot and Tobias should be
there any minute. Tobias was one of my best friends, well, a little more then a friend to
me, but every Friday night we liked to go exploring around the neighborhood for no
reason really. Just to go up and down the streets, alleys, and trails through the woods.
Sometimes we’d race on who was the fastest to climb a tree. Or play hide’n’seek in the
alleys. Or race up and down the streets. Like we were little kids again. :)

Tonight we went on a short trail through the woods. It was a full moon, the night
glowed, and the sky was unbelievable...

“I bet $5.00 that I’ll beat you to the top of that tree!” Tobias smiled. And before
he could say another word I ran ahead of him.

“Hey!” He yelled and ran after me. I started climbing. Reaching branch by branch.
There would be a wonderful view at the top! I saw the top branch!! Almost there! As I
leaped and pulled myself from each perch. Tobias was climbing steadily up the other side.

“Yahoo!” I stopped and looked through the leafs. I was at the top! And I could see
my house from here! I could see to the edge of the forest at the mountains. I could see
Angel’s Pond from here too!!

Tobias jumped onto the same branch and I could tell he was breath taken by the
view too. Then I turned to him. His sandy blonde hair hung down in thin strands in front
of his eyes. His blue eyes seemed to glisten in the moon light. He looked into my eyes. It
was a moment I couldn’t believe... it seemed magical. We kissed. The sweetest most
perfect kiss. Then it ended, and he kind-of looked at me with an embarrassed smile. I
couldn’t blame him. That was a big step since he is very shy. I smiled back.

His left foot slipped, he lost his balance. A look of pure shock and horror washed
over his face. It was all in slow motion. As he was slipping from the branch he
whispered,... “I love you...” I grabbed for his hand but it was too late. He was falling,
falling to his death. All I could do was watch, watch as he twisted through the air, I was
completely helpless...

Chapter 4

I woke up with a shriek. I was trembling again. It was dawn already and it felt like
I hadn’t slept at all. Maybe I should explain that nightmare... Well... about a year ago, I
had a friend, named Tobias who lived right behind my house. And we were really good
friends, and we always would creep around the alleys and climb trees in the forest. Well,
one day, I think it was a Sunday, his parents were worried because they hadn’t seen him
since 9:00am and it was past 7:00pm. And he wasn’t at any of his friend’s houses. They
called everyone they knew. But no one had seen him. They didn’t get any sleep that night.
They were worried sick. In the morning, around 8:30am, the morning news said a young
man was found in the woods not too far from them. They rushed to the scene and... it was
Tobias... A police officer said the boy was climbing a tree, and apparently fell from a
branch near to the top of the tree. He fell head first, fractured his skull with a long gash on
the back of his head, and bleed to death. Two weeks later his parents moved out of the
state and I never saw them again.

I know, it sounds weird...like this was totally made up, but it isn’t. It happened.
And was the worst thing that ever happened to me in my life...
