Raised in Leavenworth, Minnesota Richard Joseph Mathiowetz was born in Sleepy Eye, MN at the Sleepy Eye Municipal Hospital on Oct. 23, 1935. He was raised in Leavenworth, MN, where he resided his whole life. He was the son of Martin & Louisa (Moldan) Mathiowetz. Richard attended District 12 School in Leavenworth Township and graduated from St. Mary's Catholic High School in 1953. He married Mary Lou Koll on Oct. 30, 1956 at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Morgan, MN. They made their home in Leavenworth, MN. Richard began his career at the age of 18 for The Martin Mathiowetz Construction Co. Richard enjoyed playing baseball for the Leavenworth Baseball team in his youth and continued his involvement as a board member throughout his life. He and his family spent many enjoyable days together relaxing at their lake home and camping in the early years. He was an avid fisherman and world traveler visiting more than 40 countries. Hunting and wildlife were his passion. He was a supporter of Ducks Unlimited, Pheasants Forever, MN Deerhunters Association, Paynesville Sportsman's Club and Koronis Lake Assoc. He took this involvement to a personal level by restoring a hundred plus acres of his own land to natural habitat by planting thousands of trees and replenishing wildlife. Richard was a member of the Church of the Japanese Martyrs Catholic Church in Leavenworth and a 26-year member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus. He was a philanthropist in many ways, orchestrating many charitable projects including the building of Sleepy Eye Hockey Arena, Divine Providence Building improvements, Schoenstatt on the Lake facilities, the athletic field lighting at Sleepy Eye Public School, Leavenworth Baseball and Softball Fields, the Stark Ball Field, the all-weather track at Sleepy Eye Public School and the St. Mary's Football Field. Richard's benefactors include the Church of the Japanese Martyrs, St. Mary's Church and Schools, Crosier Seminary, St. John Vienney Seminary, San Lucas Toliman in Guatamala, MN Citizens Concerned for Life, Brown County Historical Society, and many other missions and charities. He was an advocate and tireless worker for the transportation and farming industry. He served on the Board of Directors for MN Transportation Alliance, Associated General Contractors of MN, Highway Construction Industry Council and the MN Agri-Growth Council. He was also affiliated with the MN Asphalt Pavers Assn., Concrete Pavers Assn., and many others. Richard was first and foremost a loving husband, then a son, father, grandfather, brother, and friend. His legacy will be the family he loved and nurtured, and the roads he built. Richard is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Mathiowetz of Leavenworth, MN; children, Brian & Ronda & their children Brett, Rachel, Stacy & Chad Mathiowetz; Glen & Lana & their children Ashley, Matthew, Molly & Sean Mathiowetz; Dean & Judy & their children Jordan & Victoria Anderson, all of Sleepy Eye, and Suzann & Troy & their children Abby, Mitchell & James Hendricks of Bemidji; his mother, Louisa Mathiowetz of Sleepy Eye; brothers and sisters & their spouses, Roman Mathiowetz of St. Paul, Rosemary & James Rathman of Comfrey, Rita & Patrick Morgan of Elmore, Reinhold & Connie Mathiowetz of Marshall and Alma Mathiowetz of New Ulm. Richard is also survived by his uncles, aunts, and many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his father, Martin; son, Leon at age 19 in 1979; brother, Rudy; and several in-laws and nieces. Funeral service 1 pm Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999 at Church of the Japanese Martyrs, Leavenworth, with Fr. Mark Mallak & Fr. Joe Steinbeisser officiating. Interment Japanese Martyr's Cemetery, Leavenworth. Visitation 3-9 pm Wednesday and 7:30 am-12:00 pm Thursday at the Sturm Funeral Home, Sleepy Eye, MN. There will be a K.C. Rosary at 5 pm and a parish prayer service at 8 pm, both at the funeral home on Wednesday. The family prefers memorials be made to the Richard and Mary Lou Mathiowetz Foundation.
