About US
As is true of many entities, what
we are is explained by our name.
We are Church
First and foremost, River
Heights
is a church, a word that from the Greek language means, “belonging to
the Lord”. We are therefore
a ‘Christian’ church that believes that the Triune God - the Father, Son
and Holy Spirit – is the only true God.
We believe that God created all things during a six-day period
and that he created all things, including mankind, in perfection.
We believe that the Holy Bible is God’s Word to us and that it
stands alone as the only source and standard for all our beliefs,
teachings and practices. We
believe, as the Bible teaches, that mankind fell into sin, when in
prideful rebellion, he was not satisfied being subject to God, but tried
to usurp God’s authority in order to control his own destiny.
Because of our sins, God, in his justice, condemned us to
everlasting punishment. But
because of his grace and kindness, God also provided a remedy for our
condemnation, namely his Son Jesus Christ, who sacrificed himself to pay
the redemption price for us all.
Since Christ is our Redeemer, we trust him alone for forgiveness
and eternal life. We are a
‘Christian’ church because we believe this ‘Christian’ faith.
We are Evangelical
River Heights
is an ‘Evangelical’ church.
The word ‘evangelical’ also comes from the Greek language and means ‘to
proclaim the good news’, that is, the good news about the salvation that
Jesus Christ provided for us.
We believe that God has brought us into the Christian church, not
only so we can have salvation for ourselves, but so that we also may
bring Christ’s salvation to others.
Therefore we welcome all people to come and hear this ‘good news’
from our pulpit and we support our Evangelical Lutheran Synod through
which we carry out ‘evangelism’ in many areas of the world.
Each member of this congregation regards it a privilege to be
‘evangelical’, that is, to tell others about Jesus Christ.
We are Lutheran
River Heights
is a ‘Lutheran’ church. The
Lutheran church had its beginning in the early 1500’s when a monk named
Martin Luther learned from the Holy Bible that we cannot earn salvation
through good works, as the church of his day taught.
Rather, Luther discovered that salvation is given to us as a free
gift, through faith in Christ Jesus, faith that the Holy Spirit alone
plants within us. As
Lutherans, we hold the seven Lutheran Confessions, all of which proclaim
Jesus to be the only Savior, as correct expositions of the Bible’s
teachings.
