| The Sioux Quartzite is not only limited to the Pipestone area. It is a large body of bedrock that extends over much of southwestern Minnesota, southeastern South Dakota and may be part of the same body of quartzite found in Wisconsin. The town of Jasper was incorrectly named for a red form of chemical quartz. Chemical quartz in general is called chert. It is a microcrystalline form of quartz that is similar to agates and flint. This red quartzite is quarried at the south end of Jasper where there is a park overlooking the quarry. Many of the buildings in the town used the quartzite as construction material, including the school shown in the photos below. The main road in town is called Wall Street where the reddish quartzite is visible at every turn. |  |
