7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - The Lumberyard.
At the center of the American Dream is the home--and at the center of
its creation or renovation is the lumberyard. We'll explore the
options lumberyards provide for builders and renovators--from natural
to engineered woods. We'll show how plywood and pressed woods are
made, trace exotic woods to jungle and desert, visit a special
lumberyard that deals in recycled and antique woods, and go on an
underwater expedition as divers locate ancient logs buried in the
Great Lakes and New Zealand. We'll see how 50,000-year-old ancient
Kauri wood is "mined" from a bog and is now all the rage among those
who live in mansions and travel on yachts. From the lowly 2-by-4 used
to build a tract home, to a reclaimed set of historic planks used to
make a million-dollar bar in a 5-star hotel, this eye-opening program
hits the nail right on the head.

8-9pm -- The Universe - Cosmic Collisions
It's been said that our universe is a cosmic shooting gallery. Gravity
is moving everything around and things are bound to collide.
Astronomers are attempting to understand how these collisions occur in
the dark recesses of space. Learn about collisional families, which
are clusters of comets and asteroids; planetary collisions; mass
extinction impacts involving asteroids and comets; stars collisions;
and galaxy cluster collisions. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used
to bring this series down to earth as the heavens yield their greatest
secrets.

9-10pm -- The Universe - Nebulas
Take a tour through the "Art Gallery of the Galaxy" and view what are
considered the "crown jewels" of the heavens. Nebulas are mysterious
clouds of gas that aren't classified as stars, planets, moons or
asteroids. Astronomers use the most sophisticated techniques to view
them since they are practically invisible to the naked eye. Nothing
less than stunning, nebulas glow, reflect or obscure the galaxy's
light with amazing swirls of color. Nebulas mark the regions where the
nothingness of space first coalesces, where stars are born and where
stars die. Cutting-edge computer graphics are used to bring the
universe down to earth.

10-11pm -- Ax Men - 04 - The Big Hit
Across Northwest Oregon, the Ax Men continue to grind it out. Storm
season arrived with a vengeance--shutting some crews down while others
struggled to stay afloat. Now a bigger storm is brewing. The stalled
housing market's effects are hitting the Ax Men hard. Jobs will be
shut down; men will be put out of work. This week, the housing market
hits home.

There are prophecies and oracles from around the world that all seem
to point to December 21, 2012 as doomsday. The ancient Mayan Calendar,
the medieval predictions of Merlin, the Book of Revelation and the
Chinese oracle of the I Ching all point to this specific date as the
end of civilization. A new technology called "The Web-Bot Project"
makes massive scans of the internet as a means of forecasting the
future... and has turned up the same dreaded date: 2012. Skeptics
point to a long history of "Failed Doomsdays", but many oracles of
doom throughout history have a disturbingly accurate track record. As
the year 2012 ticks ever closer we'll speculate if there are any
reasons to believe these doomsayers.

man who spent more than 40 years pushing the limits of technology to
create entertainment magic: Walt Disney.

10-12am -- True Caribbean Pirates -
Blackbeard. Anne Bonny. Henry Jennings. Calico Jack. Henry Morgan.
Black Bart Roberts. During the mid to late 17th and early 18th
centuries, they were feared criminals. The Caribbean was their domain,
the parade of treasure and cargo to Europe their target. The origins
of Caribbean piracy began when Columbus made landfall in the Bahamas.
Two years later, the Pope granted Spain the exclusive right to the
Caribbean and most of the New World. The Spanish reaped an immense
fortune in gold and silver, but with a price. England, France, and
Holland all desired a portion of this wealth and each established
Caribbean bases and used privateers--private sailors fighting for
profit--to protect their interests and steal Spanish treasure. The
line between privateering and piracy became blurred. We'll examine
this Golden Age of Piracy and the true stories of the infamous
pirates, how they operated, and their successes and failures in this
dark and deadly profession.

nuclear catastrophe.

10-11pm -- Ancient Discoveries - Ships.
Lurking beneath Lake Nemi's blue waters lay the titans of Roman naval
engineering--the Nemi Ships. Titanic luxury liners of the ancient
world, they held inventions lost for thousands of years. But why were
they built? Were they Caligula's notorious floating pleasure
palaces--rife with excess and debauchery? Flagships of a giant sea
force? It took Mussolini's obsession with all things Roman to finally
prise the two wrecks from the depths of Lake Nemi near Rome. Using an
ancient Roman waterway, he drained the lake and rescued the ships, an
accomplishment captured on film that we access to illustrate this
astounding story. Sophisticated ancient technology discovered in the
boats transformed the understanding of Roman engineering overnight.
Yet by 1944, the adventure had turned sour and the retreating German
army torched the boats. We reveal the mysteries of the Nemi Ships and
the ancient technology that made them possible.

In the 21st century, turf grass is the number one crop grown in the
U.S. When suburbia exploded after World War II, turf became the
defining characteristic of nearly every yard. First, it's off to the
research greenhouse facility at The Scotts Company to learn how grass
seed is bred for special characteristics. Then pay a visit to the Toro
Company, a big name in lawnmowers. The Rain Bird Company and its
automatic sprinkler systems is the life giver to thirsty lawns across
the country, and The Davey Company specializes in moving trees in
excess of one million pounds. Finally, take a trip to California
Waterscapes and watch as a crew installs a waterfall and koi pond.

9-10pm -- The Universe - Biggest Things in the Universe
We can't compare anything on earth to the biggest things known in
space. The Lymann Alpha blob is a bubble like structure containing
countless galaxies--perhaps the biggest object in the entire universe.
Regions of radio-emitting gas called "radio lobes" could be even
bigger. Then there are super galaxy clusters which are hundreds of
galaxies merged together due to cosmic collisions. Discover which is
the largest planet, star, star cluster, constellation, black hole,
volcano, galaxy, explosions, moon, storm, impact crater and "void" in
space.

10-11pm -- Mega Disasters - Asteroid Apocalypse.
Many scientists now believe that a "killer asteroid" wiped out the
dinosaurs and 70% of all living things 160-million years ago. How
likely is it that a similar event can occur again? In this episode, we
explore the catastrophic effects of a 2-kilometer-long asteroid
hitting just off the coast of Los Angeles. Using the Chicxulub
asteroid impact of 160-million years ago (the one that killed off the
dinosaurs), we watch--moment by moment--as the blast annihilates not
just Los Angeles, but communities within 100 miles of the coast. A
firestorm consumes much of southern California and tsunamis wreak
havoc up and down the entire western US coast. The resultant dust
cloud covers much of the Midwest, devastating crops for at least a
year. Millions of people die from the direct effects of the impact,
and millions suffer a famine the likes of which the world has never
seen. The good news is that technology has given us the tools
to--perhaps--avert such a disaster.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Logging Tech.
When Paul Bunyan cried "Timber!", he never foresaw today's
cutting-edge, controversial industry that feeds a ravenous,
lumber-crazy world--a world striving to protect nature while devouring
it. Come into the woods to see how he-men and hi-tech combine forces
to topple 4-billion trees annually; journey to 19th-century America,
when lumberjacks cut a legend as large as the timber they felled; and
travel with a tree from stump to sawmill and learn its non-wood
uses--from aspirin to film to toothpaste!

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Saws
Sink your teeth into the razor sharp world of saws. Cut across the
centuries to discover how the Egyptians arduously sawed stone as
compared to modern saws that slice through limestone like butter. Saws
have been used as instruments of torture and tools for surgery. They
are imperative for construction, salvage, demolition, and they even
make music. Whether they have teeth of steel, carbide or diamond, you
will be on the cutting edge of successful sawing.

9-10pm -- MonsterQuest - The Real Hobbit
Travel to the interior of Sumatra, in Indonesia, in a search for what
locals call the Orang Pendak, translated as: Man of the Woods. In 2004
skeletal remains were found on the neighboring island of Flores and
named "the Real Hobbit." Could Orang Pendak, with its human face, be a
surviving ancestor to the Flores Man? An expedition is launched deep
within the rainforest. The natives claim to see the creature often,
and they even find footprints of an unknown upright walking beast.
Will camera traps reveal its identity? One-part history, one-part
science and one part monster, discover the truth behind legendary
monsters.

10-11pm -- UFO Hunters - UFO Dogfights
In the 1970s and 80s, military pilots allegedly not only saw UFOS, but
engaged them. The team gets special access to ex-pilots in Iran and
Peru who followed strange objects on hair-raising chases later
investigated by the US Military. American jets have had close
encounters that continue to this day with objects seemingly too fast
to be terrestrial.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Paint.
From the Impressionist canvas to the Space Shuttle...from customized
hotrods to the brilliant orange hue of the Golden Gate Bridge or tiny
electronic devices--paint is one of our most ubiquitous products. And
paint adds more than just pigmentation. It's a crucial engineering
element, protecting ships from water corrosion, stovetops from heat,
and the Stealth Bomber from radar detection. In homes and businesses,
it provides a balanced spectrum of light and protects surfaces from
wear. In this colorful hour, we discover how this marvel of chemistry
and engineering is made, and how it is applied. Come see what's
beneath the surface as we reveal one of man's most ingenious methods
of defeating the elements and adding spice to life!

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Bricks.
The history of civilization has been built on the back of brick, and
it's been said that "architecture itself began when two bricks were
put together well." From great Egyptian temples to the Roman
aqueducts, the Great Wall of China, and the dome of the Hagia Sophia,
brick is one of the oldest, yet least celebrated, building materials
manufactured by man. In this hard-packed episode, we explore brick's
past, highlighting defining moments, such as the Great London Fire of
1666, the zenith years of brick in the New York Hudson River Valley,
and brick as an essential building block in infrastructure and
industry. We'll feature advancements through the ages as well as
construction techniques, trends, and the future of brick construction.
Essentially, brick is still just burnt clay...it has been around for
thousands of years, but continues to serve as the backdrop of the
modern age.

A gritty, true-life series exposing the world of history's most
notorious and dangerous gangs.

10-11pm -- Cities of the Underworld - New York: Secret Societies
Today, New York is the biggest city in the country... but it's got
some dark secrets in its past. It was founded by covert groups,
overrun with gangs and mob bosses, and ruled by secret societies.
This is the true foundation of the city that never sleeps, and host
Don Wildman is headed deep beneath the skyscrapers, taxicabs and
street vendors into a New York that few have ever seen before. From a
hidden Freemason tunnel and secret world of the Sandhogs, to mobster
hideaways and gang escape routes, we're uncovering the secret
societies that built New York--from the underground up.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Renewable Energy.
In the young 21st Century, two realizations are dawning on the world's
population: we are hopelessly dependent on petroleum, which is only
going to get more expensive; and global warming, caused mainly by our
burning of fossil fuels, will impact civilization in ways that we're
only beginning to grasp. Stepping in to fight both of these massive
problems are the rapidly evolving technologies that harness renewable
energy. We will see how air, water, earth, and fire are transformed
into clean, reliable sources of heat, electricity, and even automobile
fuel. We'll take an in-depth look at the most proven and reliable
sources: solar, wind, geothermal, biofuels, and tidal power. From the
experimental to the tried-and-true, renewable energy sources are
overflowing with potential... just waiting to be exploited on a
massive scale. And unlike fossil fuels, they'll always be there.

8-10pm -- Crime Wave: 18 Months of Mayhem -
John Dillinger, Machine Gun Kelly, Baby Face Nelson, and Bonnie and
Clyde are some of the most notorious criminals of the last century.
Technological advances like the Tommy Gun, V-8 engines with electric
starters, and bulletproof vests often gave the robbers the advantage
over the police. A spree of robberies, killings and kidnappings during
an 18-month period from 1933 to 1934 shook the nation to its core. The
government responded with a war on crime that began with America's
first national police force and the rise of the FBI. HD location
photography, archival footage and evocative recreations are used to
transport the viewer back to this era and to capture the hectic pace
of this crime wave.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Harvesting.
Cutting, digging, picking, stripping, shaking, and raking--whatever
the crop, there's a custom machine to harvest it. It all began with
handpicking and today it's often one man and one machine harvesting
hundreds of acres in a single day. The farmer may even get a little
help from satellites. Far above the earth, high-resolution photography
is giving the grower more opportunities to cut costs and maximize the
harvest. From the debut of the sickle in ancient Egypt to McCormick's
famous Reaper to the field of ergonomics that assists human
harvesters, we'll dig into the past and future of the harvest.

8-9pm -- UFO Hunters - Reverse Engineering
Reverse engineering is a common practice used by private industry and
the government as a means to keep up with or surpass the competition.
Has the US military derived various forms of technology, including
stealth technology, from downed UFO's? Are we competing with
extra-terrestrial beings using their downed craft as the genesis for
advances in modern technology? Follow a team from UFO magazine as they
investigate the possibility that the technology providing us with
fiber optics, night vision and the microchip, just to name a few, were
derived from wreckage obtained from Roswell and other UFO crash sites.

9-10pm -- UFO Hunters - UFO Vortexes
There are locations all over the globe -- like the Bermuda Triangle --
where the Earth's energies result in a preponderance of mysterious
activity. The team travels to Sedona, Arizona, long known for strange
phenomena, to interview witnesses to unexplained sightings of lights
and objects in the skies. Here they explore the concept of vortexes,
which are places on the Earth's surface where lines of energy meet.
They link these spots to the Sedona sightings and other incidents,
like the Hudson Valley UFO flap of the 1980s. Later, Tim and Jeff
consult an astrophysicist who suggests that inter-dimensional travel
via Vortexes may be entirely possible under Einstein's Theory of
Relativity.

10-11pm -- UFO Hunters - Alien Contact
For years, people have claimed to have had direct, personal contact
with an alien. In this episode of our series, the team tracks down
several people who claim to have had such contact. They'll also work

Think man is unique within the animal kingdom? You might not after
this hour that features an amazing collection of earth's non-human
inhabitants that use tools, build intricate structures, create traps
to capture prey, and perform complex procedures, including farming.
From Egyptian vultures utilizing stones to crack open hard-shelled
ostrich eggs to chimpanzees using a "tool kit" to extract termites
from their nests, we learn that our ability to create tools is not
exclusive. Other mammals create subterranean structures, including
those prodigious diggers Prairie Dogs, and many animals and insects
make devices to augment hunting, such as the Ogre-faced Spider that
spins a small web to throw down on unsuspecting passersby. And we're
not the only ones to work as a unified, multi-skilled force.
Aphid-Raising Ants protect and care for herds of plant juice-sucking
aphids that they "milk".

coming in for landing. Finally, a home video camera rolls as a family
is trapped in the worst fire in the history of Southern California.

9-10pm -- Shockwave - 09 - Shockwave
Watch as a derailed train whose cars are loaded with toxic chemicals
explodes like a rocket in the Illinois countryside. Then a paramedic
rushing to help a wrecked driver at the Daytona International Speedway
is hit by another racecar, thrown 30 feet in the air and then hit
again by the same car. Can eight people fit into a life raft built for
four when their perfect fishing day turns into a nightmare? Relive the
day Matt "Kangaroo Kid" Coulter tried to jump his 40 horsepower "quad"
over a huge riverboat. Finally a Delta ll Rocket explosion in Cape
Canaveral, Florida results in huge chunks of burning metal raining
down on the launch pad and surrounding areas.

10-11pm -- Shockwave - 11 - Shockwave
What begins as a peaceful air show ends in disaster when three planes
collide above Ramstein Germany then slam into the runway. Australian
stunt driver Ray Bauman attempts a world record by launching a car off

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Doomsday Tech 1.
Doomsday threats range from very real (nuclear arsenals) to
controversial (global warming) to futuristic (nanotechnology, cyborgs,
and robots). Despite the Cold War's end, we live under the shadow of
nuclear weapons, arms races, and accidental launches. Next, we stir up
a hotter topic--the connection between global warming and fossil
fuels--and ask if they're cooking up a sudden, new Ice Age. And we
examine 21st-century technologies that typify the dual-edged sword of
Doomsday Tech with massive potential for both creation and
destruction--nanotechnology (engineering on a tiny scale), robotics,
and cybernetics. We witness amazing applications in the works, wonder
at the limitless promise, and hear warnings of a possible
nano-doomsday, with tiny, out-of-control machines devouring everything
around them.

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Overseas Highway.
A spectacular roadway nearly 120 miles long, the Overseas Highway
links mainland Florida with the Florida Keys, and contains 51 bridges,
including the Seven-Mile Bridge. A boat was the only mode of travel
from Miami to Key West until oil tycoon Henry Flagler completed his
railroad line in 1912. After a 1935 hurricane destroyed 40 miles of
track, the scenic highway was built using Flagler's bridges. A
$175-million refurbishment that ended in 1982 resulted in today's
remarkable Overseas Highway.

9-10pm -- Cities of the Underworld - Katrina Underground
Inflicting over $80 billion in damage, and causing the deaths of over
1,800 people, Hurricane Katrina was among the greatest engineering
disasters in US history. But was Katrina the "big one" New Orleans
had been waiting for? Many believe the "perfect storm" is yet to come.
If and when the big one does hit, will New Orleans be ready? The
answers are in the underground. From the Army Corps' latest levees to
last-ditch efforts to save New Orleans' vanishing wetlands, we're
going deep into New Orleans' underground to see where New Orleans
stands, and if it stands a chance.

10-11pm -- Ancient Discoveries - 11 - Siege of Troy
For 3000 years the Siege of Troy has remained steeped in mystery.

battlegrounds for new clues. This program takes us behind the Troy
celebrated by Hollywood to uncover fascinating evidence in regard to
Achilles' duel against Hector, the sailing of the vast Mycenaean fleet
and the wooden ship of Troy. Watch as we apply modern technology,
archaeology and engineering to uncover the real story behind the
legend of Troy.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - Saws
Sink your teeth into the razor sharp world of saws. Cut across the
centuries to discover how the Egyptians arduously sawed stone as
compared to modern saws that slice through limestone like butter. Saws
have been used as instruments of torture and tools for surgery. They
are imperative for construction, salvage, demolition, and they even
make music. Whether they have teeth of steel, carbide or diamond, you
will be on the cutting edge of successful sawing.

8-9pm -- The Universe - Biggest Things in Space
We can't compare anything on earth to the biggest things known in
space. The Lymann Alpha blob is a bubble like structure containing
countless galaxies--perhaps the biggest object in the entire universe.
Regions of radio-emitting gas called "radio lobes" could be even
bigger. Then there are super galaxy clusters which are hundreds of
galaxies merged together due to cosmic collisions. Discover which is
the largest planet, star, star cluster, constellation, black hole,
volcano, galaxy, explosions, moon, storm, impact crater and "void" in
space.

9-10pm -- The Universe - Cosmic Apocalypse
The Universe as we know it is condemned to death. Space, matter and
even time will one day cease to exist and there's nothing we can do
about it. Harsh realities are revealed about the future of our
Universe; it may collapse and burn or it might be gripped by a
galactic ice age. Either of these scenarios might be a long way off.
However, our Universe could suddenly be destroyed by a "random quantum
fluctuation", a bubble of destruction that can obliterate the entire
cosmos in the blink of an eye. No matter how it ends, life in our
Universe is doomed.

10-11pm -- Ax Men - 08 - Loggers Under Fire
In the wake of the plummeting logging market, the Ax Men are barely
surviving. The Gustafson bosses have a close call while taking over
for their laid-off crew. An old hook tender returns to the Browning
team, stopping Jesse's ascension to company management. Pihl loses a
crucial member of the team as it struggles to finish Pig Farm. At
Stump Branch, the young guns take matters into their own hands when
Melvin has to leave the site.

7-8pm -- Modern Marvels - The Manhattan Project.
At 5:30 a.m., July 16, 1945, scientists and dignitaries awaited the
detonation of the first atomic bomb in a desolate area of the New
Mexico desert aptly known as "Jornada del Muerto" (Journey of Death).
Dubbed the Manhattan Project, the top-secret undertaking was tackled
with unprecedented speed and expense--almost $30-billion in today's
money. Los Alamos scientists and engineers relate their trials,
triumphs, and dark doubts about building the ultimate weapon of war in
the interest of peace.

8-9pm -- Modern Marvels - Rats
Feared by millions worldwide, rats are some of the most dangerous,
destructive and useful animals on Earth. Ride along with a Terminix
exterminator to get face to face with the creepy creature in a near
rat infestation and see the great lengths we take to get rid of the
pesky pest. Tour the Hacco Inc. rodenticide plant to see how tasty
poisons are concocted. At the Taconic rat breeding facility, we'll see
how hundreds of thousands of rats are bred and raised in high-tech and
controlled environments. Watch rodents compete in the Xtreme Rat
Challenge at the annual American Fancy Rat show. We'll trace their
history and role as a vector of deadly diseases, but also explore how
they have saved countless lives as lab rats. Scientists will show us
how a remote controlled rat could be your savior in the near future.

9-10pm -- MonsterQuest - American Werewolf
The werewolf is a centuries-old legend based on myth, not a real
animal. However, local eyewitnesses in Wisconsin and Michigan report
seeing a dogman--a tall hairy man-beast. Professional hunters and
trackers armed with tranquilizer guns will be deployed in an area of
recent sightings to find this creature. For the first time polygraphs
and hypnosis will be used on eyewitnesses with astonishing results.
One-part history, one-part science and one part monster, discover the
truth behind legendary monsters.

10-11pm -- UFO Hunters - Code Red
How would the military respond if UFOs suddenly invaded restricted
U.S. airspace? It allegedly happened, and the team gets a rare
interview with the Military Air Traffic Controller who was there, and
uncovers remastered audio tapes and radar imaging that reconstructs a
shocking, little known series of events over the southwest United
States.

Good Morning, Mr. Bond

Episodes of the quirky Northern Exposure are on Hallmark Channel. And episodes of the even quirkier "Twin Peaks" are sometimes on Bravo. Monstervision review & host segments of the Twin Peaks movie "Firewalk With Me."

Fun fact:
Griffith Park Observatory According to Ripley's Believe It Or Not, the 800-mile long Aruwimi River, which flows through the Aruwimi Forest in the Congo, was unwittingly named by famous explorer David Livingstone. He asked a native what the name of the river was. The native replied "Aruwimi," which means, "What is he saying?"

In 1942, Adolf Hitler inherited 9,000 acres of grazing land in Colorado from German relatives. The PT Boat of WW2 was based on a blueprint from Andrew Higgins, a bootlegger who had used the speedboat design for rumrunning during Prohibition. And Arlington National Cemetery has four Tomb Of The Unknown Soldiers (WW1, WW2, Korea & Vietnam) but only 3 bodies: identification processes have become so good that all remains returned from Vietnam are eventually identified!

In 1963, ventriloquist Paul Winchell was awarded a patent for the first successful artificial heart. The plastic heart was first tested on a calf, which lived 94 days.

"I've come up with a set of rules that describe our reactions to technologies:
1. Anything that is in the world when you're born is normal and ordinary and is just a natural part of the way the world works.
2. Anything that's invented between when you're fifteen and thirty-five is new and exciting and revolutionary and you can probably get a career in it.
3. Anything invented after you're thirty-five is against the natural order of things." Douglas Adams (1952-2001, Hitchhhiker's Guide to the Galaxy)
