James Iha

James Iha's solo album debut came into the stores on February 10th, 1998. The album was more hi-fi than I expected it to be. When I heard he had recorded it around the time when the Pumpkins were on the MCIS tour, and I figured it'd be him with a 4-track or something. But this album is 24-track hi-fi hi budget that we're used to. Billy Corgan makes no appearance, and I'm glad he didn't. I'm sure it was an unspoken rule. Billy has dallied in James' work in the past and I'm sure he figured it'd be ok to let him do it himself, since it is his album. D'Arcy makes an appearance on the record, offering a few harmonizing vocals. Matt Walker, the drummer for the Pumpkins after Jimmy, is also on the record. The record is very good in most aspects. The first song is reminiscent of a Wallflowers song, but the rest of the album is pure James Iha. The only thing I grow tired of is the subject matter. Every song is of love, not that the subject is bad or that I haven't wriiten a few on it myself, but it sounds a little repetitive. James' writting style is different than that of Billy's, but they both write a lot of love, desire, and heartbreak. Billy says he loves someone by calling her "an easy chair" in one song, and hates another by calling her "barbed wire" in another. James is more straight forward "I love you", but I really must compliment the album in all aspects because it is very good. He is another natural song writer. If you have listened to Mellon-Collie & the Infinite Sadness(MCIS), Pisces Iscariot, or some of the many singles & b-sides, then you have probably already heard some of James' work. Unless you are dumb and advance past his songs just because it isn't on the radio or because it isn't Billy. Not that Billy isn't a genious, but James is a loud voice & input in the group. Anyhow, check it out.
