Strategy #1 - PLORPE
Students memorize this acronym to remind them of a set of skills to apply to reading passages in order to increase comprehension:
Predict -Use the title and pictures (if any) to predict what the passage will be about
Look & Locate - Read (look at) the questions. Underline or highlight (locate) any important information or key words.
Organize - Using the important information from the questions (like paragraph numbers or specific words/quotes), make notes in the passage to remind you of the information for those questions. (Write question numbers next to the appropriate paragraphs.)
Read 2X - First time: Make notes as you read the passage. Look for things that you know you will need to use to answer the questions. Second time: Read straight through to get the flow of the passage.
Purpose - What was the author’s purpose?
Eliminate - Go back to the questions. Eliminate wrong answer choices and choose the best answer for each question.
